I read the negative reviews on this book and it only shows the obvious that we all have different opinions of what makes good or bad reading. I found this story heart warming, original with good chacter development. I felt that part of the story was necessary for good plot development. I read late into the night and picked up again in am. I highly recommend this book to any reader who likes a story with depth of emotion. When you read romance,its a given a happy ending will result. With this story it mattered. My time was not wasted.

This was a cute story about a group of people who all feel like they have no family. Faith, who was abandoned as a child, grew up in the foster care system. Alex, whose parents were never around growing up. Julian, Alex's grandfather, who had multiple marriages and a lost first love. And finally Jessie, Alex's daughter, who he doesn't believe is his real child, who's mother recently passed away. This is a story involving lots of magical powers bringing them together to reverse a family curse that was created by Julian taking a pot from it's ancient burial spot. I love Barbara Freethy's writing style, so I enjoyed the book. Heartwarming story about self discovery for all the characters.

Pastry chef and orphan Faith Christopher has spent her lifetime wanting to be loved. Abandoned at a church as an infant, she finally found love with Gary Porter, but he died before they could marry. His family has adopted her and hopes that she'll accept second son Ben's proposal. The two are merely friends and have never had romantic feelings, yet Ben is insistent that they marry, and his family is putting pressure on her to make it happen. Then Julian walks into her bakery and sets her life on a different course with his tales of a family curse which he's asked her to help him reverse. Just when she thinks that a marriage of convenience with a friend would be acceptable, she meets his brooding grandson, and a reluctant attraction develops between them.

As Faith sets out to help Julian find his lost love and to reverse the past, she and Alex find themselves spending more time together, and she spending less time with the Porters, who are still convinced she'll be their daughter in law soon. She feels a kindred connection to Jessie, who is convinced that if she is a good girl, Alex will keep her. Jessie and Julian play matchmaker to the hesitant duo.

Freethy goes to such lengths to keep Ben's "secret" under wraps. But a single man living in San Francisco, working in an art gallery, desperate to marry a woman he does not love to please his parents... I guessed that secret after the first page. This is one of her older stories, but pales in comparison to her better early novels such as "One True Love" and "Just the Way You Are."

Wanted to keep on reading did not want book to end. Such great characters in this book. Couple of con artist in the grandfather and grandchild. Who could doubt they are related. A great story about family and what it takes to be one. Also great character to teach you what family is not. Only thing needed in book was for one character a pushy one at that to apologize. Other than that I loved the book from page one to the last page.

Some of the character development is predictable, but her use of the grandfather is unique and adds a bit of spice to an otherwise fairly characteristic romantic story. The thread of superstition that works its way into the scenic backdrop of the beautiful mountains of Arizona is what makes this story so engaging. The protagonist, Faith, grows from a well-defined and naïve young woman to someone who retains her core but grows in her strength and independence; archetypal, but written well.

Maybe it's because she manages to make each and every person that I meet in her stories, real to me. I find myself talking to, berating and arguing with her characters, as if I was there besides them. That is how real she makes them to me.

At first I wasn't sure I would like this book. But I more then liked it I loved it. The paranormal aspects were perfectly written and not overdone, the love stories were amazing. The back story was weaved throughout the whole book and it brought other parts of the story to the forefront. It's a very well written story with great characters. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Overall though it is a good story as there is a lot else going on - a stroppy teenager, an odd old man and a family curse. It is easy to like the characters and you want to see what happens at the end.

I had read a couple of Barbara Freethy books so I expected this story to be as good as the others. I wasn't disappointed. This is a lovely, what I might call Comfy, story. A few of the the characters were somewhat complex to begin with, but as the plot developed a lovely exciting adventure began to unfold. I read the book very quickly, as I couldn't put it down. For a story that on the face of it could have been "homely", it turned out to be quite exciting and with some suspense. I would recommend this book.

This is the third Barbara Freethy book I have read. Golden Lies, which was excellent; Ryan's Return, which was excellent and The Sweetest Thing, again excellent. The books are so easily read, with a feeling that you can't put them down. I just love the characters in all books read so far - and each book is better than the one before. Normally I look for freebies, but since finding Barbara Freethy, I don't mind paying, being worth every penny. (Must stock up for my holiday reading time.)
