2021 was a blinder of a year for television shows, with records being broken left, right and centre, need we say it, Squid Game anyone?

While fashion watchers have been able to already dissect many of the stunning outfits donned by Sarah Jessica Parker for the Sex and the City reboot and are likely waiting with bated breath to see Lady Gaga in stylish girl boss action in House of Gucci, (if the trailers are anything to go by it's going to be one glamorous affair), as far as television was concerned this year there was plenty of competition in the best dressed category.

Today's top videos

We've taken a look back at the shows that were especially gorgeous to look at this year when it came to costuming thereby making them an absolute to binge-watch.

For 70s cool-girl style: The Serpent

Based on a true story, The Serpent tells the tale of how Charles Sobhraj, the suspect of a series of murders, was brought to trial in the 1970s.

Jenna Coleman plays his menacing partner and accomplice in the show, Marie-Andrée Leclerc,, and many viewers may have found themselves coming for the true crime but staying for the retro style.

The BBC show was a masterclass in how to do 70s cool-girl glam right, from accessories such as hair scarves to square-framed sunglasses, psychedelic-printed blouses and boho paisley dresses.

For Studio 54 eleganza: Halston

Ewan McGregor did a wonderful job at portraying the flamboyant, larger-than-life American designer but we had an even softer spot for: All. The. Style.

Ryan Murphy's biopic charted the rise and fall of the late and controversial fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick who built his own fashion empire on the back of elegant and fluid shapes and was one of the key players who defined the style scape of the 70s.

There is ample glitz and glam to gawk in this stylish series.

For a refresher course on the joys of getting glammed up: Cooking with Paris

Lockdown living was not the most glamorous of times but Paris Hilton sure showed that any soirée at home was worthy of being an ultra-stylish affair.

The hotel heiress, who recently wore not one but four wedding dresses when she tied the knot with Carter Reum, donned show-stopper after show-stopper in her Netflix cookery show, Cooking with Paris.

From going shopping in a bright pink bowed high-low gown by Christian Cowan giving her take on a modern-day Marilyn Monroe in Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or cooking a vegan burger in an aluminium fringe minidress by the American-Vietnamese designer Thai Nguyen to making heart-shaped pasta with Demi Levoto wearing a puff-sleeved dress with a heart print all over it, Paris brought it on the style front.

For delightful decadence: Bridgerton

There was no way that Bridgerton could not make a feature on this list and frankly we don't need to provide a rationale.

When it came to costumes, this Netflix show was the most awe-inspiring of 2021 and it saw the trend of regencycore take TikTok by a fashionable choke hold with searches for corsets and empire-line dresses amongst other things utterly soaring.

For woke preppiness: Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl 2.0 shone a conscious lens on the sartorial choices of the new class of Upper East Siders.

Eric Daman returned as costume designer and stylist but this time yielded a change of tact with a more inclusive and sustainable approach to the character's wardrobes.

High-low dressing, gender fluid ensembles, buzzy emerging names as well as leading luxury brands were all given a real focus, with a tonne of scene-stealing It bags and statement shoes on top. He understood the assignment.
