That’s never been done, and is no sure thing this season thanks to sublime seasons for Liverpool and Arsenal, though an incredible three-team title scrap is now likely down to just the Gunners and three-time defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool are limping towards the finish line following a draw at West Ham and Arsenal are hanging in there — winning again in Week 35 to become the first this season to 80 points — but Manchester City have grabbed the Premier League title race by the scruff of the neck.

City’s on 79 points with one more game left than Arsenal. Liverpool flopped in an away Merseyside derby loss to Everton before their draw at West Ham, and need an unlikely amount of help to stay in the race.

There’s a crowded field of European chasers and there isn’t much between these teams in a massive scrap for elbow room. City is definitely the club looming large with reputation and experience but Liverpool have the easiest schedule of the three title contenders.

Last season

Here is a link to the Premier League table from the 2022-23 season, as Manchester City surged to a third-straight Premier League title after Arsenal led the way for most of the campaign.

Who are the title, European contenders?

Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp know they can rival Pep Guardiola for the crown but both suffered shock defeats at exactly the wrong time of the season. Arsenal have responded well, while Liverpool responded once only to fall again. Manchester City have also seen their hopes of winning the double treble dashed, so it will be intriguing to see if that impacts their title bid.

Aston Villa and Tottenham are still locked in the the top four scrap with Manchester United falling away. West Ham have also wobbled and were knocked out of the Europa League as they are now pushing for a European return through the table while Newcastle United were in the top four hunt but have regained their footing as a top-six hunter. And Chelsea is suddenly lurking as a possible European entrant.

Relegation scrappers and rebuilders

New boys Luton Town and Burnley are fighting to stay in the Premier League, while Sheffield United were not able to stay up. Nottingham Forest and Everton were both hit with points deductions, but Everton’s safe. The rebuilds for both Manchester United and Chelsea are short of the top four and pressure is mounting on Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino respectively. Tottenham, again, look much further ahead and Ange Postecoglou has created one of Europe’s most exciting teams to watch and they’re pushing hard to finish fourth.

Will Everton, Nottingham Forest be relegated?

We know the answer for one of the two teams who’ve been docked points this season, as Everton has sealed another season in the Premier League. Forest? We’ll see.

After being given a 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Everton appealed and had it reduced to six. Then they were deducted a further two points due to another charge for breaching PSRs, which they are appealing. Sean Dyche now has the Toffees safe from the relegation zone after three wins in seven April days as Everton have avoided a first-ever relegation from the Premier League.

As for Nottingham Forest, they have received a four-point deduction for also breaching PSRs and they have appealed that decision. Forest are out of the relegation zone by one point and have to stay above Luton Town and Burnley over the season’s final weeks. Forest play at Burnley on the final day of the season.

Which American players are in the Premier League this season?

We’ll update the 2023-24 Premier League table in this space all season, as American fans sees which of their USMNT players can finish highest on the table amongst Matt Turner and Gio Reyna (Nottingham Forest), Auston Trusty (Sheffield United), Tyler Adams (yet to feature in the PL for Bournemouth due to ongoing hamstring issues) and both Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson of Fulham. Burnley’s Luca Koleosho is USMNT-eligible and represented the U.S. at the U-15 level but has since represented Italy at two youth levels and after a bright start to his first-ever Premier League campaign the teenager has suffered a serious knee injury.
