In 1945, the dictator of fascist Italy and Hitler's close ally Benito Mussolini faces defeat. In a desperate attempt to avoid capture, he tries to flee the country with his lover Claretta Petacci, but Italian partisans are on their tail.

This Italian production is surprisingly tense considering that I think most of us know how Mussolini's last days end. I wasn't aware though of just how complicated the political situation was. As far as I can tell this is fairly historically accurate with many of the scenes being shot where they actually took place. The film is in Italian but has two big American stars in it - Henry Fonda as Cardinal Schuster and Rod Steiger as Mussolini. Both are dubbed into Italian. Steiger plays Mussolini fairly low-key throughout with only an occasional whiff of his bravado on display. I find it intolerable enough when a biopic is a mere sequential recounting of events, let alone when it is as sterile as this. Watching this in a claustrophobic classroom with uncomfortable chairs certainly didn’t enhance the experience but the direction and dialogue are so bland that I couldn’t even begin to feign an interest in the events of what should, by all means, constitute a thrilling film. A waste of Rod Steiger and a justified obscurity — just what Mussolini deserves!
Allegedly, the American cut of this movie is dead. Nobody wants to restore it because it tampered with the original version’s politics apparently. As such, the only version of this readily available (meaning you don’t have to go on a thousand dollar vision quest to find it), is in Italian. No subtitles. There are about ten minutes of it in English. I said I was going to attempt to watch it one day as like a fun experiment, and today was that day. It was weird. Hikaye hoş seçilmiş, oyunculuklar konusunda da yeterince tatmin oldum. Mussolini performansı (Rod Steiger) performansı gayet iyi. Keza Kardinal Schuster rolüyle Henry Fonda’yı da izlemek hoştu.
Senaryoda detaylar ve bağlantılar üzerine iyi çalışılmadığını düşünüyorum. Dönemin dokusunu yansıttıkları için sanat yönetmenini tebrik ederim ama görüntü yönetmenliği ve kurgu başarısızdı.
