So what happened to the other release? was that from the same masters as the US release? so this is from the 35mm source?

It was a botched release apparently, they shipped the previous version as a 1 disc set.

It was supposed to have been deleted, but it's still on sale with Amazon.

Not sure if they're offering a replacement program as that was released in error.

Yes, 35.
The special effects sequences were originally shot on VIDEO and then transferred on FILM in the production phase.
