Nick Carter And Aaron Carter Get ‘Quiet On Set’ Treatment With ID’s New ‘Fallen Idols’ Doc

The noise surrounding Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has hardly died down, but Investigation Discovery is already preparing for its next high-profile docuseries. Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter, which is slated for a late May release, will take a closer look into the controversies and accusations surrounding Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter and his late brother Aaron Carter.

The four-part documentary will reportedly cover the allegations of sexual assault made against Nick by three women — Melissa Schuman, Ashley Repp and Shannon “Shay” Ruth, all of whom will be interviewed in the series along with Nick’s ex-girlfriend, Aaron’s former fiancée and an unnamed “member of the Carter family.”

The new project will also investigate Aaron’s public struggles with mental health and substance abuse, which ultimately led to his shocking death in November 2022 when he was found unresponsive in a bathtub in his home. The former child actor’s death was ruled an accident as a result of drowning due to the effects of difluoroethane (an ingredient found in spray cans) and Xanax, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter not only offers a deeper understanding around the allegations, but also chronicles the intense backlash Nick’s accusers have faced since their decision to speak publicly and the lasting impact that has had on their lives,” ID said in a press release, per Variety.

The release continues, “Fallen Idols explores the dark side of fame and fraught family dynamics but also the intense challenges faced by accusers who come forward against celebrities and pop culture icons in today’s modern world.”

Nick was first accused of sexual assault in 2017 when Schuman claimed in a blog post that he had raped her in his Santa Monica apartment in 2002. In 2022, Ruth filed a sexual battery lawsuit alleging that the boy band singer infected her with HPV after he raped her in February 2001 — and accused him of assaulting her when she threatened to tell people. Nick has denied all the allegations made against him.

Around the same time that the allegations against his brother surfaced, Aaron revealed to fans that he was suffering from multiple mental health issues, including multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety and manic depression, per CNN.

“During this period, Aaron Carter decided to support Nick’s accusers, while battling addiction and struggling with his own mental health, stoking a very public feud between the two brothers in the lead-up to Aaron’s tragic death in 2022,” the press release said, per Variety.

The show comes on the heels of ID’s bombshell Quiet on Set docuseries, which chronicled the toxic side of Nickelodeon sets in the 1990s and early 2000s. The doc became Max’s most-watched streaming title ever, garnering 1.25 billion viewing minutes in its opening week alone, according to The Wrap.

Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter will air in two parts on Monday, May 27 and Tuesday, May 28 at 9/8c on Investigation Discovery. The series will also stream on Max.
