Margo is the youngest of three and an only daughter born to William Everett and Margaret Martindale. One of her brothers is Billy Martindale, professional golfer and golf course designer. She grew up in her hometown and went to Jacksonville High School, where during her high school years she competed in golf and was involved in the drama section and cheerleading, while also winning the Football Sweetheart crown, and Miss Jacksonville High School.

After matriculation, she enrolled at Lon Morris College, but soon transferred to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. During her Michigan years, she spent a summer at Harvard University, where she made several onstage appearances, with such future star actors as Christopher Reeve and Jonathan Frakes.

Before she made her screen debut, Margo spent four years at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, in Kentucky and befriended there actress Kathy Bates. In 1987 she made her debut film appearance in the made-for-television film “Once Again”, and continued with film appearances through the early ‘90s, such as the Academy Award-nominated action drama “Days of Thunder” (1990), starring Tom Cruise, and Nicole Kidman, then action adventure “The Rocketeer” (1991), and Academy Award-nominated drama “Lorenzo’s Oil” (1992), starring Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon and Peter Ustinov. All through the ‘90s, she was building her name with appearances in high-profile films, such as “Sabrina” (1995) with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond, then Academy Award- winning “Dead Man Walking” (1995), and “Marvin’s Room” (1996), among others. Though those were only minor roles, Margo’s net worth was increasing, thanks to the success of the films.

Nothing changed for Margo at the turn of the new century, as she featured in the comedy-drama “28 Days” (2000) with Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen and Dominic West, and in 2002 appeared in the crime drama “The Laramie Project”, with Christina Ricci, Steve Buscemi and Kathleen Chalfant. Then in 2004, she took a step forward, portraying Elaine Fitzgerald in the Clint Eastwood-directed drama “Million Dollar Baby”, which starred Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman and also Clint Eastwood; the film won several Academy Awards and numerous other prestigious awards. This was a breakout year for Margo, as since then her roles have become more notable. From 2007 to 2008 she portrayed Nina Burns in 20 episodes of the TV drama crime series “The Riches”, while in 2009 she was Dr. Browning in the horror thriller “Orphan”, which increased her wealth.

In 2010 she had a supporting role in the action drama “Forged”, and portrayed Miss Ham in the biopic about Penny Chenery, “Secretariat” in the same year. In 2011 she returned to TV roles, as she was selected to play Mags Bennett in the TV action drama series “Justified”, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Two years later she was chosen for the role of Claudia, a KGB handler in the TV crime drama “The Americans” (2013-2017), for which she won three Primetime Emmy Awards, all in the category Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

She has had several more TV roles, such as in “Sneaky Pete” (2015-2017) as Audrey, while she also voiced herself in the animation comedy “BoJack Horseman” (2014-2016). Most recently, Margo is set to appear in the film “Downsizing”, and the TV series “The Guest Book”, both scheduled for release late in 2017.

Regarding her personal life, Margo has been married to Bill Boals, a musician, since 1986; the couple has one child together.
