The story of a champion Eskimo sled dog named Kavik who survives a plane crash in the wilds of Alaska and is found and cared for by a young boy named Andy Evans. But the dog's owner finds Kavik and takes him back to his home in Colorado where the dog escapes and embarks on a 2,000-mile odyssey in search of Andy.

A few months after playing theatres on its home turf, this Canadian family feature showed up on network TV down south as THE COURAGE OF KAVIK, THE WOLF DOG. Director Peter Carter demonstrated a flair for shooting in rugged Canadian locations on pictures like RITUALS and KLONDIKE FEVER, and KAVIK shares their natural beauty. Unfortunately, these magnificent views aren't enough to prop up a thoroughly mediocre and predictable screenplay. For a film aimed at all ages, KAVIK is also rather grim and violent, featuring more actual dog fighting footage than it needs. The only real novelty nowadays comes from watching John Candy in a supporting role as an obnoxious, dim-witted gas station owner named Pinky.
