- milliegordon2Southbury, Connecticut671 contributionsLovely museumWe planned our trip to Chadds Ford to see the Andrew Wyeth painting at this museum. It's small, but glorious. The setting is beautiful and the paintings on all three floors were wonderful. We actually went 2 days in a row.Visited May 2023Written May 6, 2023
- Valery Y8 contributionsArt in the Studio and MuseumWe thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Andre Wyeth's studio and house. We learned so much and then went into the museum to see Home Places. This exhibit ends July 13, 2023 and due to the delicate nature of original paintings by NC Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth won't be displayed for at least 5 more years.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 12, 2023
- Leza HLondon, United Kingdom676 contributionsA must visit for those who appreciate the work of Andrew Wyeth and the Wyeth family of artists…but rude staff.I’m English living in New York. We drove here specifically because I’m an admirer of Andrew Wyeth. The current exhibition includes several pieces not shown before. I visited Maine last year to see his paintings inspired by the landscapes there. His colour palette is sublime and the texture and detail always breathtaking. Yes I gush, but his work will do that to you. Art also on show by his father NC Wyeth and son Jamie Wyeth; a great insight to three generations of extraordinary artists. The architectural design of the gallery, the way it sits in the landscape by the side of the river…is of itself a work of art. Wyeth studio tours at an additional price sell out in advance; book ahead online. One star knocked off for the staff. The rather aggressive person who sold us the tickets…condescending, unfriendly…they pointed at the admissions notice and pretty much barked at us “which are you” we had only just entered the gallery lobby, knew exactly what we were doing and there was no-one else waiting to be served. Some of the staff in the gallery spaces were aloof, despite us acknowledging them and smiling. We’ve visited galleries and attractions in 60 countries and never had this experience. The lady who served me in the gift shop was lovely…perhaps she could be promoted to offer some staff training?! We are very friendly, always interested and the (albeit brief) engagement with the staff we encountered genuinely made us feel unwelcome. Maybe we caught them on an off day…go anyway to see the gorgeous art.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 9, 2023
- carrie6 contributionsgreat tour!!!!I took the NC Wyeth tour and it was life changing I was so overwhelmed when I walked into the studio. The tour guide Patty I think her name was. She was very knowledgeable about everything we asked her . this is one of the best tours I have ever been on . I highly recommend this for anyone who is an art lover IT was only 10 bucks well worth the money. after you go on the tour you will want to go and look at all of his art in the museum. I just wish there had been more of his work. Can't say I was really impressed with the guest artist on the third floor . I really came to see the wyeth art.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 14, 2023
- RonL40Utica, New York3,586 contributionsSuperb museum space in a lovely setting. The exhibition space is very well-designed, featuring simple wayfinding and beautiful views of the Brandywine. We were fortunate to see the exhibit on the abstract paintings of Andrew Wyeth. Superbly curated. Were impressed by the wider range of painters than we expected... along with the Wyeths, a nice representation of American painters of the 19th and 20th century. Certainly a museum that should be includes in your itinerary... a visit in the early Fall offered spectacular scenes.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023
- LittlebadSM2 contributionsBeautiful location and an excellent galleryWe visited on my last day before going to Philadelphia airport in the evening to return to the UK. It was a revelation as generally I am not so impressed with art galleries. The surroundings of course are lovely but especially so on a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies and the glowing leaves of Autumn. The building has been beautifully turned into an exceptional place to visit and house some remarkable works by painters I had never heard of and have a yearning to have some even if only as posters in my little flat! The three floors cover an enormous number of artist the majority of which are the Wyeth family but including teachers and pupils giving a really interesting background to the local artistic community of Pennsylvania, and the surroundings. The day we went, there was a exhibit called 'Family and Nature in Contemporary Children's Book Illustration' and thought not only the artists included but the display and use of vibrant wall colours to complement the pictures where just wonderful and testament to the staff who curate and design the displays. While I was sad to leave it has left a lasting impression on me and hope to visit again.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 2, 2023

What an extraordinary museum - an outstanding collection of representational art housed in a historic mill building, with contemporary additions that make the most of the beautiful setting on the banks of the Brandywine River. We spent 2 hours here, admiring illustrations and paintings by Howard Pyle and N.C., Andrew, Jamie Wyeth, and other family members. We especially enjoyed the N.C. Wyeth gallery with its display of Treasure Island paintings, and the special exhibit of children’s book illustrations on the third floor. Another highlight was the 1-hour tour to the N.C. Wyeth house and studio, left just as it was when the artist died in a train accident (run April through November; an additional $8.00; shuttle van to the studio). Back at the museum, we had a delicious lunch at the Millstone Café and browsed the well-stocked gift shop before driving the Brandywine Scenic Byway to the equally interesting Hagley Museum near Wilmington, Delaware.

This museum has been on my radar for years as I am a big fan of Andrew Wyeth since his painting of “Christina’s World”. This museum has an AAA discount and showcases the artwork of several generations of Wyeths as well as their creative spouses and offspring. It is also located near the creek and windows give unparalleled views of the area as well as scenic walking trails which we didn’t have time to explore. There is even a small cafe inside where my friend enjoyed her beer break as we watched the outdoors and there is also an extensive gift shop as well.

Beautiful location - makes a lovely combination visit with the Chadds Ford Historical Society visitors center and Chadd’s house which is at the other end of a 1/2 mile trail along the river and through the wetlands. The number of exhibits is relatively small, but nicely curated and about at the right level for an average attention span. Lovely little cafe with high quality fresh/local food. They currently have a fascinating exhibit on the images of the women’s suffrage movement. Go for the overall experience, not necessarily the quantity of art.

Second meal since the Covid reopening and it was great just like the first. We started with a fig and Brie flatbread special that was absolutely outstanding.
My filet was cooked perfectly and my husband had a chop special that he could literally cut with a fork.

As a very good primer for visiting the site, would to read the excellent book, "Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life" by Richard Meryman.
This will prepare you to understand this family much better.
You will almost feel that you have been here before.
There is a very nice selection of the work of Andrew here, and of the work of his extended family.
There is a nice gift shop in the one wing, and at the end of that do stop at the Cafe and try some of the wonderful mushroom soup.

The Brandywine River Art Museum, or as I call it, "The Wyeth Museum", is a must-see
for anyone who has followed the Wyeth family's artistic careers over these many decades. Plan to spend several hours of quality time while covering the three floors of space devoted to the Wyeth's.
A suggestion - start at the third floor and take your time. Take a break and have a picnic lunch along the river for a while. See the other two floors after lunch. It's all worth the time it takes.
The work of the featured guest artist was not appreciated by my wife or me, but it didn't ruin our day - the work of the Wyeth's was and is that good. Enjoy.

Hello. I will visit the museum from New York City by train. Would you please tell me the best way to go? Now I know there is no public transportations from the nearest station, Wilmington Delaware train.

Since the museum is in a remote bucolic location, the best bet is a taxi or Uber from the Wilmington station, which is about ten miles away.

Does the Barn museum in Philadelphia have different works of art by A Wayeth than the Brandywine River Museum of Art?

Have not been to Barnes museum in Philadelphia, but Wyeth works are likely different except maybe when Brandywine museum loans out works from its permanent collection.
Hello,
I have a water color painting that is supposedly signed by Andrew Wyeth.
How can I tell if it's an original piece of art?
If I brought it to your museum would someone be there to tell me about it?
I live near Williamspirt, PA and it would be quite a trip but I'm willing to make it if you think that's the best way to assess the painting.
I would appreciate any information you can give me.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Christina Wolfe
