USA Network's new action-thriller series, Treadstone, based on the Jason Bourne franchise is arriving soon, and you can expect a lot of interesting things. Created by executive producer Tim Kring (Heroes), Treadstone will expand the story that began in the Bourne novels by Robert Ludlum and became a highly successful movie franchise starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, an unstoppable soldier suffering from amnesia.

Ludlum's original novel, The Bourne Identity, was originally turned into a 1988 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain in the title role but it was director Doug Liman's 2002 adaptation starring Damon that rocketed Jason Bourne into movie blockbuster status. Paul Greengrass replaced Liman for 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and the British director would helm the rest of the series headlined by Damon, 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum and 2016's Jason Bourne. In 2012, Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three Bourne movies, directed a spinoff called The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner as a new agent, Aaron Cross.

Yet the entire Bourne saga began with Operation: Treadstone, the top-secret CIA program that turned Jason Bourne into a deadly assassin. Although Treadstone was deactivated in The Bourne Identity, USA's prequel series literally brings it back, along with a host of new super soldiers all over the world. Here's everything we know about Treadstone.

When Will Treadstone Release On USA Network?

Treadstone premieres on the USA Network on October 15, 2019 and season 1 will consist of 10 episodes. The series also secured an international distribution deal with Amazon, which is one reason why USA decided to skip the process of ordering a pilot and committed to an entire season order.

Treadstone is a major acquisition for USA Network, which is hoping that the pedigree of the Jason Bourne franchise is enough to lure viewers to the network for more international spy games, even without Matt Damon himself as Jason Bourne starring in the series.

Who Is In The Cast Of Treadstone?

Treadstone opens up the Bourne universe and will follow the exploits several new agents who were trained by the Operation: Treadstone program as well as their enemies all over the world. The series leads are Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as J. Randolph Bentley, a CIA spy who finds himself embroiled in an international conspiracy, and Brian J. Smith (Sense8) as Doug McKenna, an oil rig worker who "awakens" as a member of Treadstone.

They are joined by an international cast that includes Emilia Schüle (Berlin Station) as a KGB agent, Hyo Joo Han (W: Two Worlds) as SoYun, a North Korean agent, Tracy Ifeachor (DC's Legends of Tomorrow) as an investigative journalist, Gabrielle Scharnitzky (The Game) as Petra, a Russian agent, Omar Metwally (Mr. Robot) as a CIA agent, Patrick Fugit (First Man) as Stephen Haynes, and Michelle Forbes (Battlestar Galactica) as Ellen Becker, a savvy CIA agent who discovers an international conspiracy.

What Is Treadstone's Story About?

Treadstone will explore the origins of the CIA's Operation: Treadstone that created Jason Bourne. Using a mysterious behavior-modification protocol, Treadstone turns its recruits around the world into nearly-superhuman assassins. The series will follow sleeper agents as they’re suddenly “awakened” to resume their dangerous missions. Like the film series, Treadstone will also connect to special ops missions all over the world and the action will take place in Washington, D.C., Paris, Berlin, Russia, North Korea and beyond, promising a truly global spy series.

Many of the agents will be activated from lives where they were unaware of their origins as members of Treadstone and the series will also involve an international conspiracy that will bring many of the characters together as allies and as enemies. In the Bourne films, Jason Bourne went to war against Treadstone to secure his freedom - it's possible the new characters in Treadstone will follow suit and turn on their CIA masters as well.
