I've read every one of his books and consider him one of the best.
Followups by various authors carrying on in Ludlum's name (only) are a real disappointment and cannot be truly counted in critiquing Ludlum novels written by the author, proper.
I don't recall if I even looked at other reviews for this product because I've read the trilogy before (in 3 separate books) and the books are great. I was NOT thrilled when I received the book, because the binding is REALLY THICK. Loaned it to a friend, so I can't say for sure. At least 2 inches thick. Bulky to read and because it's paperback, the cover curves up after a little reading. (I hate that.)
I didn't return the book, but in hindsight, it would have been better to get the three book separately.
We are both an enormous fan of the movies, but the books to it to a whole new level for him.
While still a huge fan of the movies, the books (which are always better, let's face it) - are easily now his favorite, and now he's one of "those" people who loves to compare and ruin the movie a bit for me... You know the kind - "that's not how it happened in the book..."
If you, or a loved one, is a fan of the movie and any kind of reader at all - this will be a hit.
I didn't expect a perfect used book. But it really shouldn't have marked its status as 'very good'.

Twenty or more years ago I read a lot of Ludlum books, but then moved onto other authors and forgot all about him. But, like many people, I have seen all three of the Bourne films, each of them several times. Somehow, knowing who's on which side and what happens next does not detract from the excitement.
So I decided to read the books and see what Ludlum's original stories were like. And what a revelation! The films seem to take the basic premise of the story behind the books then veer off in a completely direction.
The books can each be read in isolation, although you'd be daft to buy the trilogy and not start at the beginning! There is more depth in the books than in the films and there are twists and turns to keep you wondering what's to happen next. I read from the start of the first to the end of the third as if it were a single continuous story. Thought about reading something else in between each one but couldn't bring myself to put it down until I'd read the lot.
If you've seen the films and think it'd be boring to then read the books, don't worry, the main similarity is the name of the eponymous hero. The stories are far more detailed and intricate.
But before saying anything else, let me say the books are well written and if you like this kind of fiction - fast paced fantasy with an interesting and (to an extent) a flawed hero - then these books are perfectly acceptable and probably well above average in this genre. So I'm not saying don't buy this; I'm just saying that the films are better and if you've seen them then you may find these books a bit hard going (especially one after the other). You may also think that they are incredibly far fetched (I mean the James Bond films are closer to reality) and that the use of Carlos the Jackal (who bears absolutly no resemblemce to the real man who right now languishes in a French jail) is just daft.
Probably these books wern't really for me as I like John Le Carre who presents believable novels (both plot and characters) but I know many people really want escapism from the real world and, on that basis, these books are good.
