A Feverish Trip Into the Black Hole...

This score sure brings back fond memories. James Bond alumnus John Barry here scores a space opera that was released the same year as the Roger Moore "Bond in Space" Moonraker that he also scored. This score has a similar epic, tragic and brooding feel that suits both Maximillian Schell's mad scientist character and the heroics of the crew of the Palamino.

If I have any complaints about John Barry, and I have almost none, because I love his music; it's very beautiful and very powerful, it's that he tends to repeat the same phrase of notes twice right next to each other, which is repetitive and plodding. Perhaps he thought those notes were too brilliant to only be played once. Perhaps he was lazy and wanted to milk twice the screen time out of the same set of notes. Barry seems to have been more ambitious when he scored the earlier Connery Bond films of the '60s and early '70s. John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith are my preferred film composers of the '70s. They never repeat the same series of notes twice right next to each other, and their compositions are much more layered, dense and complex.

Still, while Barry's compositions are more simplistic than Williams' and Goldsmith's, the notes Barry DOES use are the RIGHT notes, notes that evoke deep, heartfelt and powerful emotions! This creates a haunting experience.

Intrada Records once again delivers a COMPLETE presentation of Barry's groundbreaking score with superb sound fidelity. Bravo to all involved!

Most people may not remember, but THE BLACK HOLE was DISNEY©'s 1st "PG" Rated Movie – which, in itself, was "a Milestone, for DISNEY!"

Back then, you were LIMITED, to "how much music, you could release" – due to "space constraints" – so, A LOT of the Movie's Score was omitted, from the Initial Release (as was apparent, on the Soundtrack's LP disc!)

So… Imagine my utter surprise, when I discovered (on AMAZON, of all places) a "Special Edition", that contained OVER 13 NEVER BEFORE RELEASED TRACKS, from the Movie's Soundtrack! (It was a "Music-Lover's Dream, Come True!")

Now, if only other Music Sites – like, APPLE Music – would "Hop On-Board", and UPLOAD this Album, to their Store, so that others may enjoy the FULL-RICHNESS, of the spectacle… the mystery, that is "DISNEY©'s The Black Hole"!

I'm a child of the 70s and 80s and a huge sci-fi fan, so I cannot help but love this movie. It has moments of "Oh, isn't that VIN\CENT a cute robot" followed by Anthony Perkins getting gored alive by Maximilian. But it was imaginative, had a great story and some great acting, and John Barry's score went very well with the film. Even a good film can be made much much better by having the right score, and this is exactly that. It has a great gravitas and heaviness at all the right moments. It also sounds like some of his Bond scores, but oh well. It's also a little repetitive, but oh well. I listen to it on loop for hours anyways. :)

Fantastic Score Finally in Its Entirety

I loved the movie The Black Hole when it first came out, partly because of the incredible soundtrack that was almost a character unto itself in the movie. I bought this version on CD rather than downloading the original released soundtrack on Itunes because I wanted the complete score, and this version wasn't available on Itunes. Some people blast the movie - and the score - for being a cheap imitation of Star Wars, but I don't believe this as true. It was more of a mystery thriller (albeit by Disney) set in deep space rather than a space opera. The score completely encompasses this idea. From the eerie waltz tempo-ed Main Theme to the driving tempo that supported the evil Maximillian's pursuit of the crew of the Palamino as try to escape. I believe this score is one of John Barry's best. If you loved the movie and its score, you will not be disappointed by this CD.

I recall seeing this film at a theater in Florida when I was a kid and being mesmerized by it. While some of the effects have not aged as well as some other sci-fi films from that era, it's still a fun ride, especially the final sequence when they travel through the black hole itself. John Barry's moody score certainly has one of the most original themes used in a sci-fi film (for the titular space itself). I bought the original soundtrack on iTunes and later found out about this deluxe package with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. It was worth it to purchase the CD all over again.

One thing I have noticed about John Barry's soundtracks - at least the ones I like! - is that he uses the lower strings in an almost contrapuntal way, drawing you into the music; in this case he combined them with other instruments to create the musical equivalent of entering a black hole. I remembered how much I loved this movie when I was a kid in the late 70s. The music played an essential part of the movie, and it was the first time I heard of composer John Barry. It's theme song was appropriate and haunting at the same time. I just wish Disney would put this classic movie on Blu Ray to enjoy again and again. But for now, I'll just have to make do with the music of this timeless classic.
