Hilarious movie with some awesome lessons throughout. I need to pick this up again.
I didn't notice until like the fifth time watching that movie that there isn't a single cigarette in it.
You should really read the book if you liked it. Also, his "Little Green Men."
I didn't know there was a book. Will order it today.
Christopher Buckley is awesome. Enjoy!
The specific technique is called strawmanning
Well that's not exactly what strawmanning is, but it's still an effective tool
I enjoyed this scene more: http://youtu.be/tY3V0JJqnqo
I came to post this link, damn you!
r/Politics in a nutshell.
Some guy did a very cool kinetic typography video out of it.
Well, that was probably one of the worst movie scene rips I've ever seen on Youtube.
I like the immediately following clip, where both of them are enjoying vanilla ice cream cones.
I like the movie, but what the guy is saying in the scene is total bullshit.
Just because you win a debate, doesn't mean you are right.
I think that's one of the very points he was trying to express.
This is what we call a "whoosh".
It's not about being correct, it's about winning.
And it's not a lesson in that you're supposed to want to emulate him. This scene takes place in the first third--long before the main character has an ethical re-evaluation.
That said the logical fallacies he appeals to are very common debate tactics.
The point is that you don't need to persuade the person you're debating with to win, just the public. This happens all the time in politics; if you can show that the other person is wrong (or an idiot), that makes you look good.
This scene is more of a lesson on how to see the kind of bullshit that these lobbyists throw out there.
This scene is everything thats wrong with law, politics, and business. We need to care about the truth, not whos right or wrong.
Wat?
The one speaking the truth would obviously also be the one who is right.
