About the language

Italian is a Romance language spoken by around 85 million people globally. As Italy’s official language, it plays an important role in the country’s cultural identity and daily life. Italian is also the official language of San Marino, Switzerland (in Ticino and some portions of Graubünden), and Vatican City. The influence of the Italian language extends beyond these countries, as it is widely recognized and used as a second language in many parts of the world.

The roots of the Italian language can be traced back to Vulgar Latin, which was spoken during the time of the ancient Romans. Regional dialects of Vulgar Latin in various parts of Italy evolved into distinct languages over the centuries. Tuscan, particularly the Florentine variation, rose to prominence in the 14th century as a result of the writings of prominent Italian writers such as Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, and Boccaccio. The Tuscan dialect, renowned for its elegance and clarity, eventually came to be accepted as the standard form of Italian.

During the Renaissance period, the Italian language had a great influence, extending its artistic, literary, and scientific achievements throughout Europe. Italian became the language of culture, philosophy, and diplomacy, inspiring intellectuals, artists, and diplomats across the continent to learn it. Italian merchants and explorers transported their language and culture to many locations as international trade and business developed throughout the Age of Exploration, further cementing Italian as a prestige language.

Today, Italy’s rich cultural achievements and global influence keep the country relevant and celebrated around the world. Italian literature boasts timeless works such as Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy,” and Italian artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo have impacted the path of art history with their masterpieces. With legendary masterpieces like Italian opera, exquisite meals like pizza and pasta, and world-renowned luxury brands, Italy’s impact extends to opera, music, culinary arts, and fashion. The neorealism movement in Italian cinema has made substantial contributions to film, while the country’s design and architecture have inspired global trends.
