It’s the end of a very long TV era: Supernatural will wrap up its run with Season 15, the show’s stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins announced via Twitter on Friday. The news comes two weeks after The CW announced that another of its long-running dramas, Arrow, will call it quits next season.
“We just told the crew that though we’re very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last,” Ackles said in the below video. “Fifteen years of a show that has certainly changed my life… And we just wanted you to hear from us that though we’re excited about next year, it will be the finale. The big, grand finale of an institution.”
“We’ve cried some tears, and we’ll cry some more,” a visibly emotional Padalecki added. “[We’re] grateful, and we’ll work all the emotion into next season.”
Collins also noted “that this family is not going anywhere even though the show will come to an end” next year with the final 20-episode season. That prompted Ackles to pass on a note from creator Eric Kripke: “In a show about family, it is amazing, and it is the pride of his life, that it became family. So thank you guys for that.”
Hey #SPNFamily here’s a little message from @JensenAckles @mishacollins and me. I’m so grateful for the family that’s been built because of the show. Excuse me while i go cry. pic.twitter.com/QDXDsAyIfK

Well, it’s official. One more round for the Winchester brothers. Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural…does it? 😉 https://t.co/zaZHJX4H9L

It’s been a hell of a run, and we couldn’t be more grateful for all of it. No matter what, we’ll always all be #SPNFamily. pic.twitter.com/VMods3bV4V

CW President Mark Pedowitz has repeatedly said at the Television Critics Association press tour that if the ratings held up, the show would go on as long as Ackles and Padalecki wanted to do it. Thus far this season, Supernatural is averaging 1.5 million total viewers and just over a 0.4 demo rating, ranking second in both measures among all 13 CW dramas (behind The Flash).
“Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera,” executive producers/showrunners Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb said in a statement. “For us, it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen [Ackles], Jared [Padalecki] and Misha [Collins] for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send off they deserve.”
Meanwhile, series creator Eric Kripke and former showrunner Sera Gamble shared the following tweets:
#SPNFamily please remember: shows end. But family is forever. That never changes & that's what you've created here. All my love & thanks to the cast & crew & most of all you, the family. #spn @cw_spn@jarpad @JensenAckles @mishacollins @andrewdabb @serathegamble @ben_edlund https://t.co/LlExnMCDLD

Proud to be a small part of the long, illustrious life of this lil horror show that grew into a true epic tale. I learned so much writing for these powerhouse actors alongside @therealKripke and the whole incredible team. Thank you for having me, Eric. xo #SPNFamily https://t.co/wIfPScb7JW

Supernatural fans, how do you feel about the Winchester family business closing up shop? Hit the comments with your thoughts!
Oooh the Supernatural fans are going to riot!!!
Not really. If there’s one thing the show has taught us, it’s to appreciate the time we’ve had and the gift of family (#SPNFamily). Sure we’ll mourn and cry and laugh and create tributes and cry some more. But we’ll keep carrying on. It’s what we do.
Yeah just as we always do.
Yeah just as we always do
I think most of us new it would end with season 15. This news is still a bombshell though. I’m just glad they didn’t wait until Comic Con to announce it.
This is type of announcement that would bum out the crowd at Comic-Con, so it wouldn’t have been good to announce it there..
Lexcomiccon was going on when it was announced and they ran out of books!
About time.. that show ran out of new ideas many seasons ago.
I’ll never understand the point of comments like this. You too cool for the show? Obviously there are people still enjoying it, otherwise it would have been cancelled years ago. Let them enjoy it. I myself dropped out about Season 10 or 11 because I was struggling to stay invested, but I’m not going to cheer about it ending.
Mark, very very well said! 👏👏
It’s the same nonsense you hear about any popular long running show, The Simpsons, The Big Bag Theory for example.
I understand the point of these kind of comments. The argument that is being made is that since the show ran out of creative juice long ago and is no longer a “good” show and there is a finite number of prime time hours those hours could be better utilized on what is considered a “good” show. The fact that something bad is going off the air gives hope that it could be replaced by something better. Something that the OP might enjoy instead of something that there isn’t a chance in hell that the OP would ever consider watching. That’s the point.
The point is comments like that is it add nothing and are merely trolling.
If you don’t watch it, you can’t know if it ‘ran out of juice’.
Certain episodes were better, certain seasons were better but it never ran out of steam.
What the reason is why some lose interest may all be personal and is no more than projecting.
But that’s they’re opinon, that it ran out of steam and they can voice that. That doesn’t make then a hater for thinking it ran out of ideas a while ago.
Actually it is a hater comment. His words were meant to provoke. By saying about time it happened. Yes he can have his opinion but he didn’t have to be so rude about it.
I love the Supernatural, and will miss it alot. So say it ran out of steam years ago but if that’s the case it would have ended years ago! I followed it from start and will watch reruns when it’s over. I’ll definitely miss it!
You can know if you watched it at one point and then stopped because you felt that it ran out of juice. Since about season 7-8 it’s been a struggle for me to keep watching. I’m glad it’s ending since I’m only watching at this point because I’ve been watching for so long. I can’t remember the last episode that I watched or storyline that was presented and felt that it was original or well written. All they’re doing is performing the hits. And comments like this do add something. They show that although the fanbase is vocal there is also a group of people out there that think the show should have been canceled long ago. Not everything has to be an echo chamber.
“Baby” (the episode completely filmed with and around the Impala), and the Scooby Doo episode are two of the best episodes of the series, yet they aired in recent years. Don’t give me that BS that it hasn’t been good in years.
There are lots of haters! I enjoyed the show! If you didn’t like the show it is funny to even comment! It shows that you are a troll and have nothing better to do with your life!! Thanks for all the great shows guys and I will for sure buy every season and watch it for many years. I do wish that Crowley would have never been taken off the show. He was great! To all the hater EAT A FAT DICK, HAHA!
You can know if it got bad if you used to watch but, stopped because you felt that it ran out of juice. Since season 7-8 it’s been a struggle for me to keep watching. I’m glad that it’s finishing up because at this point I am watching out of habit and not out of enjoyment. I can’t remember the last episode that I’ve watched or storyline that has been presented that I’ve felt was well written. They’re just playing the hits. And comments like the above can add to the conversation. Just because Supernatural has a bunch of superfans out there doesn’t mean that everybody agrees. Nothing should be an echo chamber.
Amen!
Yeah, but that’s pure “grass is always greener on the other side” nonsense. And when there are 500+ scripted shows currently on TV/streaming, you’re telling me they can’t find something “good” to watch during Supernatural’s hour?
That is understandable and well put, Gern, but since many people really love the show it was a mean spirited post that serves no purpose. To be fair, I don’t think plotting had much to do with the show’s success. Watching the 2 brothers and then Castiel interact was the draw. Good luck to them and h cast in their future endeavors.
Gern and the OP just want to be heard. There is no benefit to any audience from their comments. It is truly trolling, and it’s sad. Sad also that Gern felt the need to further defend. If you stopped watching the show because you didn’t like it, that’s cool. To come in here just to tell others that “it’s about time” is simply childish. Thankfully there are no “likes” here to feed the trolls.
There is not a single show currently airing that is taking up valuable “real estate.” It’s not like there are just three networks anymore. There are endless spots for anything. Any show worthy of being broadcast or streamed will find an outlet. It’s not a zero sum game anymore.
If you read the article above supernatural is still the 2nd highest rated show on CW
“, Supernatural is averaging 1.5 million total viewers and just over a 0.4 demo rating, ranking second in both measures among all 13 CW dramas (behind The Flash)”.
So it isn’t just taking up the space of another new show.
Have u watched the show. It is a great show!. I used to hate it to til I actually watched it
How dare you!!! Good thing your opinion DOES NOT MATTER …it was a good show with great actors …end of story!!!
It is you who has run out of ideas..you can bugger off now,
buddy you need to learn some friggen respect! just because you dont like something doesnt mean you have to talk smack, dont like dont comment, but dont disrespect the thing we love!!
Not according to > 1.5 million viewers…
Screw yourself!
15 seasons is a big accomplishment for a tv show. I’ve been watching Supernatural since I was 14 years old and looking forward to see how it ends.
I was thinking the same thing. And with the main two characters still on it? L&O:SVU is only 6 years older and Hargitay is the only one who’s been there the since the beginning.
ICE-T
Ice-T joined SVU in season two.
Ice-T came in season 2. He technically isn’t an original.
Ice-T joined in Season 2.
Today shows are lucky if they make it to 5 seasons, even though there is a good fan base. Fan will rally and follow a show to the ends of the earth if good, but sometimes the show is still not lucky enough to make it to S5 and beyond despite fan base. We are thankful that Jared and Jensen have been willing to do the show and conventions for this long.
i really just hope they end it well i love supernatural and hate when tv producers leave us on a cliff hanger cause i constantly wonder what comes next but knowing that there wont be a next makes me hope that there isnt a cliff hanger but and actual ending and one that is good enough for the record books just my opinion
*cries*
Bittersweet, to be sure. I hope the Winchesters get an amazing end. They deserve it.
yes and the 15th final season is there last chance to make destiel canon by having dean and cass kiss each other and admit that they are more than friends!
Somebody’s a Dean/Cass fan.
Somebody will get this lol
I agree, I started watching it on tv the first episode, haven’t missed one since, cried more times than I can count, laughed till I cried, got angry, had warm feels. The show is amazing and I can’t imagine not seeing it anymore. I will probably cry all 20 episodes knowing it’s ending. I just pray they give it the RIGHT ending. Something that great and iconic can’t end with a whimper, chuck and amara need to come back and in some fashion, tell them “ well done my good and faithful survants, enter into paradise “ so they can see EVERY ONE that died, waiting for them. They have fought so long and so hard it is time to rest. Let them go “ home “ and be happy. I’m sure there are other hunters out there that can continue the work, since evil never dies. This will be the hardest season ever, I’m already emotional and crying, To Jared and Jensen, you have beautiful families that need you , the kids are growing up so fast and you need to be there to share in the blessing of your families. Someday, later down the road you will sit down with them and watch your show, your family’s will and are proud. Wishing you only the best, we all love you, all of you on the show, always and forever in our hearts.
Perfectly said! This has been my favorite show and so sad to see it ending.
I hope they bring Crowley back for the ending! It would sure make it interesting since this is the last season. Dean was supposed to be the good “meat suit” and Sam was suppose to go ” to prom as the devil’s meat suit”. I will be glued to the TV to see how it unfolds. I would bet all the “Dicks” will be watching and they will shed tears also. I was kind of late to start watching but I got caught up because of a back injury. They kept me entertained while I healed from surgery because I used my DVR to record the 3 or 4 episodes everyday so I could skip the damn commercials! Thanks guys for all the years and especially the year I was out of work due to injury!
Awww, I’ll definitely miss it. I so distinctly remember how excited I was when the Pilot episode aired, and I’ve been a loyal fan ever since. I’m now retired and often put on the TNT episodes during the afternoon, although I don’t have to pay too much attention since I’ve watched them all so many times. I’m glad it’ll go out while I still enjoy watching new episodes, and I’m grateful the showrunners know it’s ending so they can do the final season justice.
Yeah, it will have aired for 15 season, but I will miss it.
Proud to say I have watched the show since the very first episode aired.
At this point it’s like comfort food to me.
Likewise, I followed Jensen Ackles after Smallville and its become my favourite show. I’m going to miss it but I think Ackles needs to do something else.
Yeah, I know it’s been 15 years and all, but I still kind of can’t believe I’m reading this news. Although, I’m 100% certain this won’t be the end of Supernatural. Jensen and Jared will absolutely play Sam and Dean again, whether in TV movies or a limited series revival or as guest spots in an offshoot series (which I think will happen now–the main show kind of monopolizes all potential “supernatural” storylines in its world leaving no room for any spinoff that feels meaningful and has the same stakes, but if the main show has ended, there’s room.) It’s a question of “when,” not “if.”
As much as I love this show, its probably best if they go out knowing they’re going out. This way they can, at least, give everyone a good send off instead of some rushed garbage.
I will miss this show, but I appreciate the advance notice. They’ve had a heck of a run.
Thank you TVLine for not saying the show is cancelled
NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know, great run, long run, ending on own terms, but this is the show I’m not ready to say good bye to yet.
Thanks everyone for all the memories & good times!
wow big changes at the CW with both Arrow and Supernatural ending next season
I know its crazy i wonder if part of the reason is because there going to do something big to end those shows i wonder if Supernatural is going to be part of Crisis On Infinite Earths at the end of the year like the first half is all about the Winchesters discovering that something is wrong in the multiverse (since their is one on this show) and the reason why something is wrong in the multiverse is because all of the multiverse is going to be destroyed by an alien known as the Anti-Monitor and the Arrowverse characters bring Sam, Dean, Cas and more to Earth-1 to be part of the fight and after Crisis happens the last 10 episodes will be set in the post Crisis world and end the series with whatever they have in store
Ok I kinda love this.
That would be funny. Sam and Dean battle the anti Monitor who turns out to be Castiel’s evil alter ego.
They definitely have to include the Winchester in the cross over ! Waiting for this for years ! I’ve heard Arrow star and Spn stars are friends.
This is the last chance !!
As for Supernatural, it’s been a hell of a ride. I will miss them but it’s great to get a proper ending !
I know and what better story to have them crossover to then Crisis On Infinite Earths which is a big game changing event where Earths will get merged into one and i hope whatever Earth Supernatural is on they’ll merge with the rest of the Arrowverse halfway through their final season and deal with the fallout later on before the series ends. I hope that come Comic Con were going to get that announcement where not only Supernatural will be part of this epic crossover but Charmed, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Legacies and Riverdale will also be part of it as well.
Nooo! I would’ve continued to watch had they decided to go 20 seasons. What a bummer.
No we won’t riot. Most true, dedicated fans, who have been here from the beginning understand that it did have to end eventually.
Unfortunately the show hasn’t been what it used to be for some time now.
Much love to Jensen and Jared and hopefully they will continue on with other projects.
Was it cancelled or did they decide to end it?
I think Jared and Jensen called it quits.
I know this show has many fans who will claim that every season has been great, but no show should ever go on this long and Supernatural should have ended long ago. Not just because the show originally had a five-year plan, but because it’s impossible to keep shows fresh after so many years.
Been with you boys from the beginning and I’m sure as hell going to miss you hope you get a great ending
This made me to start to cry which is silly but it has just be such a huge part of my life. I hope it gets a good ending. It will always be my show.
it isnt silly..i cried..and cried some more..probably still will, i dont give a crap i love it. Sam, Dean and Cass are some of my best friends, and i will never stop watching, long after the end. and its a huge part of a lot of people’s lives, we all say its not just a show its a lifestyle :) im weird and obsessed but i dont care :)
After such a long run, we all kinda had a feeling it would be ending soon. That being said, seeing the video hurts a little bit. This is my all time favorite show and words cannot describe how much these actors and characters mean to me. I will be an absolute mess during the finale! I am glad everyone involved is getting a full season to prepare for the end, and I really cannot wait to see what the casts next moves are once the show ends. There will always be a SPN Family, and it will certainly never end with the show’s series finale.
Nooo how could you get rid of a good show?? Why do you networks have a decent show then you go ahead and cancel it and replace it with these stupid shows that last less than half season!!! You’re making a very Bad Decision
I can almost guarantee that Jared/Jensen wanting to be done played a major part in it ending, rather than a standard fully ratings based cancellation. Had it been ratings based, they would have just done a shortened season to wrap things up. It’s not like they need the episode count.
It was Jared and Jensen’s decision. The producer said he will keep going as long as they want to .
No!
Say it ain’t so!
I don’t know how i feel about this
And with it, the last of The WB is gone too.
:'(
Watch the frog.
I didn’t think about it like that.
