This movie is not just an all time classic, but an icon. It is a paramount story filled with acute moral imperative. I am sure than at least 99% of those who watch it now, (those born hence the 1980s) cannot fully (or, in truth, even partially), appreciated what the director and writer were stating and putting forth into the public forum. As for the acting, this was an era where acting was an art. Where you could both, feel and (to an extent) live what was being presented by the actors. Moreover; the noir was a great part of the vibe and emotion of the film and the genre. To watch it in any format other than B&W is not only a waste of time and effort - as much of what is being delivered is lost. Also, it should be watched in the original format. The framing and blocking done is genius and should never be seem in a wide-screen mode. It is not the Hulk, or Spiderman. One of my 10 favorites. Sad. Quite a sad film. I too know what it is like to pray, wish and even pretend time has stopped and that - better - life has not evaporated and passed on by. Thank you for the post.
