  "Most important of all, you've got you." WOW. What a powerful story this was - complete with incredible, courageous performances. Based on the compelling 1973 novel of the same name by Bette Greene, the author's true life story helps paints the picture of the person the book and screenplay came from.

  Huh. Never knew there was a PG prequel to THE NIGHT PORTER...

  Kidding aside, this - albeit consciously - asks a lot of its audience. We're asked not only to see through the eyes of a child with limited experience and not an ounce of worldliness, but to value humanity over nationalist prejudices backed up by historical cruelty and body counts. From Patty's (Kristy McNichol) naive perspective, the escaped Nazi is the only person she's ever been interested in: her deeply tragic first love. What bum luck. He's a bossy grifter, looking to hop the next train outta town, but against all odds his heart softens meeting "the enemy" face-to-face. And she's too young to have conceived of anyone as…

  Not a great adaptation. The production is not bad, especially for a tv film, but there is so much content missing. So many necessary scenes to help build Patty, Anton, and Ruth's relationship are gone. Much of the racial tension has been sapped from the story, as well as the exploration of our main character's personal philosophies. The book was fine, but the story as presented in this movie felt unsatisfying and watered down.

  “One of the most poignant made-for-TV movies ever produced. The story focuses on Patty Bergen, a lonely Jewish girl (played by Kristy McNichol) in the American South who secretly befriends an escaped German prisoner of war during the 1940s. Their doomed relationship, and the reaction to it, says much about bigotry, forgiveness, and perseverance. Don’t miss Esther Rolle’s Emmy winning performance as Ruth, a domestic worker who remains loyal to Patty.”
