Just finished Doctor Sleep. (Major Spoilers)
Man. This was a pretty good book. The ending was definitely not what I expected. I thought momo just gave him some sort of information that he was abra's uncle, not that she gave him her steam to use against the true knot. Momo was probably my favorite character.
I found myself disliking Lucy tho. I know she's her mom, but when abra was with dan fighting them, she needed to trust her daughter instead of trying to just be defensive over her body. Dave was the one I ended up liking lol.
But jeez did Dan come out much better than I expected. When he saw the flies on his face, I was so done, I thought he was actually gonna die. I'm glad it ended up being momo's steam instead. Fuck the true knot.
And you will forever be haunted by "There's cocaine in my reach" baby. "Candy..!"
That was one of the best parts. I liked his writing there.
I agree. one of the creepiest things ever too. No baby should be around Cocaine. I think it ended up being brought up a lot as a manifestation of Danny's guilt
I kept thinking about the baby in Trainspotting during these parts. Ugh.
I went into Doctor Sleep with low expectations (I'm not usually a fan of the 20-30 year later sequel) but I really enjoyed it. Doesn't hurt that I listened to the audiobook narrated by Will Patton, who is fantastic.
The way he writes about Dan's addiction and subsequent recovery is amazing. I've never been an alcoholic but he made it so incredibly real.
This was my favorite part of the book, because I've always felt that Jack Torrance's addiction was the real villain, even in Doctor Sleep, it had consumed Danny, and he defeated it.
I agree about both Momo and Lucy! I was pleasantly surprised after finishing this book because I had not previously read anything he wrote post-2000. I would love to see this adapted into a film, but I'm afraid of how a director could mess it up.
I imagined the levers on Abra's head before defeating Crow. Could be amazing to find the extra gear then breaking his wrists!
I just read this over the last two days. Loved every page!
I thought Dan and Abra were starting some romance.
😂 if she was a few years older, I bet they would have gotten together.
In the first book it was unknown, it didn't overtake the story or get in the way of the underlying subject of substance abuse. In doctor sleep there is nothing left to the readers imagination, there are loads of ridiculous abilities like body swapping and Danny's addiction was so cheap, there could've been something more original than that. I want to clarify though I love the shining and most other Stephen king book s.
No way , worst Stephen King book I've ever read. For a start the whole concept of the shining is compromised when this make it out to be a superpower as opposed to a supernatural ability. The book is way too fast paced and short to have a decent amount of character development as most of his novels do and the true knot were ridiculous , they were literally just vampires with nothing interesting to them .
What is your distinction between a superpower and a supernatural ability? And I liked the idea that these caravans I see on the highway are secretly some malevolent horde of borderline immortals. Also, I thought the characters were developed quite nicely. The rage problems in the Torrence family and Danny's desent into substance abuse and recovery were very well done in my opinion. Different strokes I guess.
There was tons of character development, depending on how you look at it. Especially the knot, you got development from them and from abra kinda.
I agree. Also Stephen King can NOT write a young girl character. It was so damn cringey.
I really enjoyed the scenes of AA and Dan's addiction though.
