Walk Another 100 Yards in Either Direction for Better Collections

The Prague Castle Picture gallery has the benefit of being inside the security at Prague Castle and its close proximity to the tourist information office and St. Vitus, but there are far better museums close nearby, including the Prague National Gallery only 100 yards away with a larger and mostly better collection of old masters. The Prague Castle Picture Gallery consists of about 3 galleries. If I recall, they don’t let you take photos here. The literature and signs boast works by Rubens, Cranach, and Titian, but that’s a bit misleading as they have about one painting by each of the three and not a lot else. The Rubens is arguably the best of the three and, truthfully, it is a wonderful painting about the gods on Mt. Olympus holding some sort of court to decide a dispute between two of them (what the dispute was intended to represent is lost to history). The Cranach painting is of Saints Catherine and Barbara. I like Cranach’s work and liked this painting of two early Christian martyrs. The Titian painting is of a young woman at her toilet. The remaining paintings are mixed, but this is not a large collection. OK. So just outside castle security is the Prague National Gallery at the Sternberg Palace. The entrance to this second museum isn’t all that obvious - it was designed as a palace - and you have to walk down a curved side alley, but it is about 10 times as large and boasts wonderful works by Rembrandt (Scholar in his Study), Hals, Steen, Peter Bruegel (about 10, mostly but not all smaller works), Snyders, Rubens (I believe there were three of his works), Cranach, and others. There is also currently an outstanding exhibit on works between Saxony and Bohemia that includes many other notable paintings by Cranach and others. Or, if you want to go to the other end of Prague Castle towards the west, visit the wonderful Lobkowitz palace. It has original copies of works by Beethoven (with his editing remarks) and Mozart (in his hand), a rare and wonderful Bruegel painting, works by Canaletto and Valazquez, and many other fine works in an elegant setting. The palace itself is beautiful and it collection wonderfully curated. Plus it has great views and a nice café. This is an OK gallery, but there are two much better ones only steps away that you will enjoy a great deal more.

Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

There were very few people in the gallery compared with the courtyard outside making it a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of camera toting tourists. I would like to point out though to those running the place that there are insufficient signposts and boards with maps and other information. It took us quite some time to track the place down.
Inside you will find numerous works of art from the 15th century onwards from many different countries portraying a wide variety of subjects from mythology, royalty, country life and religious and theological imagery. The lighting is not as good as it could have been in my opinion. And to make matters worse information about the paintings is hard to locate and confusingly laid out. The security and gallery personnel seem quite content to watch you struggle and appear to have no idea of responsibility towards the visitors in respect to making their visit a worthwhile and pleasant one. Do not let this put you of though. Once found the Gallery is a worthwhile experience.

We visited this art gallery as part of our Prague Castle tour and although some of the art was impressive including a Titian, Rubens and Tintoretto and some famous Czech artists, the staff were very officious and seemed to think that everybody wanted to touch the exhibits and if you walked close to have a good look you requested to move away-I have never experienced such unfriendly staff anywhere in the world.

Looks like a collection that has been picked over, and all the best paintings removed. Lighting is dim and many paintings look uncleaned. Still, there are a few interesting things here, and if you have a strong interest in European painting even second-rate stuff is worth a look.

If you're interested in painting, though, the Convent of St. Agnes is much higher value.

It costs an additional 100Cz to visit the gallery which is house in the old stables.

The gallery has been painted a sort of terracotta colour and consequently appears drab. Although you do get to see a couple of old masters much of the work is rather sadly rather uninspiring. Most of the great masters from the original collection was lost as spoils of war during the 17th century. What left is considered the most valuable.

If you are an art lover then I would suggest you buy the combination ticket for the Prague National Gallery and you will have the opportunity to see a much wider range of work.

Three of the galleries are just outside the castle walls - the Sternburg (European Middle Ages to 18th century), the Schwarzenburg (16th - 18th century
romantic / baroque) and the Salam (19th century European).

You also get the added advantage that all three galleries are housed in magnificent Palaces which are worth visiting in their own right.

It isn't a very large gallery. There are around a 100 paintings by Italian, Dutch,Flemish, German and Czech Masters. It houses some impressive paintings, and includes works by Titian, Aachen and Rubens.I particularly liked the Assembly of the Gods on Mount Olympus. It is well worth a visit, if you like art.No photography is allowed inside.

This is an interesting gallery, small, and rather focused on German and Dutch classics. The position of the gallery right at Prague Castle means it catches everybody's attention; but unless you are a Cranach fan, it is probably not really worth it. The ticket situation at Prague Castle is generally irritating. It is terribly complicated. There are meany combination optins, but none of the options is very practical. You will pay to see some things you want to see, and then pay to see a whole lot of things that you don't want to see. And then pay again to cover a bunch of things that you did want to see, but were not covered by any of the ticket combinations. Yes, it is as complicated as it sounds. Anyway, in the end, this gallery will not be covered by your ticket, and you need an extra one.
The next irritation happens when you come out. You saw a few pieces that you liked, but were not allowed to photograph them... so, let's get the postcard instead. Ummm... no! There are no postcards. no postcards at all of any painting in the gallery. This place needs a massive management overhaul.
So, unless you are a hardcore fanatic for little-known Dutch or German classics, skip it.

I translated the one star review here, and sadly, I was glad to see we were not the only ones to experience bad behaviour by the staff of this particular area of Prague Castle. I will get to that later.

The pictures we saw were interesting but to be honest we did not see anything remarkable. However we only saw 2 galleries before we left in disgust.

We encountered 3 staff members, all exhibiting rude, discourteous behaviour and frankly it is difficult to understand why 3 such people got jobs in the tourist / public domain area without having better training. The behaviour ranged from loudly berating people for who knows what transgression, following visitors around and standing so close to them you could feel their breath on your neck, and screaming at a 70 year old when they tried to read a piece written in minute type next to a painting. Our party comprised of 2 seniors and 2 females in their 40s. We witnessed other people getting this treatment and were not the only people to leave in disgust.

I will be contacting this organisation, I have never encountered such unreasonable behaviour from people in the service industry.

The Prague Castle Picture Gallery is a nice exhibition museum to view if you're in the Castle District ( Hradcany ).
The collection of paintings is not top notch but it's good ,some of the masters here ,its worth an hour of browsing ,staff are a bit stern if you try to photograph exhibitions but all in all its a nice attraction and its housed in a wonderful looking building, well worth checking out if you're in Prague Castle.

They advertise a few of the Baroque masters, but they really don't have top quality work by those few superstars. The collection is small, poorly lit, and in need of a good cleaning by a restoration expert. The best part of the collection are the pieces by Czech artists. (They are also the most well-lit). Unless you are a die-hard Baroque fanatic, skip this one and go to the art museum at St. Agnes Convent instead.
