Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

It is simply an architectural wonder inside and out. It can be very busy at peak times so plan accordingly. A great photo op!Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 May 2023
- Jon DBristol, United Kingdom273 contributionsWonderful cathedral.Stopped here from the hop on, hop off bus tour and strolled into the grounds which are grand and thought we were entering the castle grounds. Followed everyone else and ended up inside the cathedral. It’s a magnificent building and a work of art. Well worth a visit and didn’t even find the castle!Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 May 2023
- Harry23 contributionsStairs - tell people they are nearly there when barely up.Stairs and stairs and stairs and stairs. Only went up the tower but it’s definitely worth it. Walk on the inside of the spiral when going up and outside when going down. Also make sure to tell people they are almost up when they are barely up for more fun.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 May 2023
- Ava D4 contributionsBeautiful experienceThis was my first time visiting a cathedral and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The building and surrounding areas were beautiful and there were several attractions nearby. The lines weren’t terrible on a Monday afternoon either.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 June 2023
- Nooch21Akron, Ohio92 contributionsAmazing architectureMy family of 3 visited Prague for a few days and visiting the cathedral was on top of our list. The view alone is breathtaking. We’re history buffs so we loved every second of our tour. I would highly recommend a visit if your planning a trip to Prague!Visited October 2022Travelled with familyWritten 23 June 2023
- SteamMasterJacksonville, Florida116 contributionsMust See CastleIt was very nice, it’s free ! Absolutely beautiful. The history is rich and it only really takes about and hour to see, maybe 2. Bring crowns and euros as the bathroom costs money. It can’t all be free ! I would go again for sure. The pic is a view of the castle from our bedroom balcony.Visited June 2023Written 24 June 2023
- JJJC_Family810 contributionsTop notchIt has pretty much everything you would want to see in a cathedral – soaring ceilings, plentiful and beautiful stained glass windows, lovely and distinctive chapels, wonderful statues, a couple of unique features that add a little extra character and more. The overall effect is almost overwhelming. And it is overwhelming. We took three complete circuits of the cathedral and I guarantee you we both did not catch all there was to see and we did not spend enough time seeing what we did see. There is only so much time we had available, despite allocating the entire day to the Castle complex. It’s one of the best cathedrals we have and we have seen many, many of them. It earns its fame.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2023
- Lucas M25 contributionsUnforgettable ExperienceThe St. Vitus Cathedral really leaves an astonishing feeling when you enter the church. As the largest and most important church in Prague it's no doubt that the experience we had there could never be forgotten anytime soon. My fiancé already told me we should visit Prague again next year!Visited June 2023Written 18 July 2023
- Ryan HMiddleton, Wisconsin22 contributionsBeautiful site, multiple tickets requiredCathedral was beautiful however you will need to purchase several different tickets in order to view all the sites. The cathedral tower for example is not included with the cathedral entrance ticket. We also were unable to view the crypt with the royals as we were told that had to be scheduled in advance.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 July 2023
- LutheranLadySanDiego1,442 contributionsGothic GloryOne of the lovelier gothic cathedrals we have visited. Certainly others are grander in size, but the stained glass windows rival and exceed in beauty any we've seen. Mucha window was spectacular!Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 August 2023

We came, we saw, we sat down and people watched. It was good weather and we found a bench so all done in complete comfort. Didn't go in - expensive and big queue.

From a distance it looks impressive. Up close it is truly splendid. It took hundreds of years to complete but the final result is quite amazing inside and out. Huge stained glass windows that can only really be appreciated from the inside. Very impressive huge vaulted ceiling. You need to look up and around to see everything. It is a truly majestic space and should certainly be on a visit list when in Prague.

St Vitus Cathedral is one of the big landmark structure's of this fascinating city ,although construction started on the cathedral during the reign of Charles IV in 1344 but due to wars, plagues, financial woes the cathedral wasn't completed until 1929 ,the cathedral was up until the 1800's were the kings of Bohemia were crowned ,its in my opinion one of the most beautiful buildings in Prague and a big tourist attraction in Prague Castle, if you're planning a holiday to Prague I highly recommend you visit St Vitus Cathedral.

St. Vitus Cathedral is located within Prague Castle and has been the burial place of the Bohemian royalty and home of the Bohemian Crown Jewels for centuries. Coronations of the kings of Bohemia were held here until 1836. The cathedral is the largest and most important place of worship in Prague. Construction on the current cathedral began in 1344, under the reign and instruction of Charles IV, the namesake of the Charles Bridge. Construction was delayed and stopped numerous times over centuries, due to deaths, wars, and political and financial problems, and was finally completed in 1929. You can’t miss the sarcophagus of St. Adalbert, one of the patron saints of the Czech Republic.

Really enjoyed our visit to the cathedral for the architecture, stain glass windows and wall paintings are fantastic. Get to the castle and cathedral early for it gets really busy from 11am onwards. We did the cathedral 1st before exploring the castle etc.

The cold, snowy weather won’t stop me from visiting Prague. This is my 5th time to visit the city and 1st time to visit the Cathedral. My brother and sister in law told me to keep walking past the cathedral and not to look back yet. They asked me to stop and turn around. Wow! Spectacular sight.
I was amazed how huge and impressive this cathedral was. My sister in law and I climbed the south tower. I think it was 288 spiral steps. The view from the top was jaw dropping. Such a beautiful city. Loved every moment I was there.

Are most of the famous sites to visit very busy in June?
Diego B
Wiesbaden, Germany51 contributions
I’m thinking they will be busy in June because it’s the summer. I was there in the winter and there was a lot of people. I imagine the summer is busier. However, if you go to certain places in the morning there isn’t a lot of people yet.

Will there be a Mass on Wednesday August 21. What time? Is there a way of getting to the Church without climbing many stairs or climbing up a steep hill. We are in our 80s and don’t do stairs or steep hills very well.

Use tram No. 22 to Pohořelec and have an easy stroll down the hill. In 10 minutes you reach Hradčany square. Entrance and security check on the left side of the castle. Mass is held on weekdays at 07:00 (morning).

Buena suerte
