  • Cardinals' Dylan Carlson: Dealing with left shoulder injury

Carlson left Monday's exhibition game versus the Cubs due to a left shoulder injury, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Carlson left Monday's contest after colliding with Jordan Walker in the outfield, in which the former landed hard on his left arm. Carlson left the field with trainers, and the severity of the injury has yet to be determined. If the injury is severe enough for Carlson to miss the beginning of the regular season, Mike Siani could see some starts in center field, as Tommy Edman (wrist) and Lars Nootbaar (ribs) are also out.

  • Cardinals' Dylan Carlson: Exits game after outfield collision

Carlson was removed from Monday's exhibition game versus the Cubs following a collision in the outfield with Jordan Walker, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Carlson had his legs taken out from under him by Walker and appeared to land awkwardly on his left arm. He then walked off the field with a trainer and is surely headed for testing. Carlson had been slated to be the Cardinals' center fielder while Tommy Edman (wrist) is out, but Carlson's injury could throw a wrench into those plans. It's possible that prospect Victor Scott could re-enter the mix for starts in center field if Carlson isn't ready to go for Thursday's season opener versus the Dodgers.

  • Cardinals' Brandon Crawford: Takes batting practice

Crawford (hand) took batting practice Monday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

As long as he doesn't experience any lingering effects with the hand injury he suffered just over a week ago, Crawford will return to play in the Cardinals' exhibition finale Tuesday against the Cubs. Assuming health, he's slated to serve as a backup shortstop for the Cards this season.

  • Cardinals' John King: Still in play for roster

King (illness) was scheduled to face hitters at the Cardinals' spring training complex in Florida on Sunday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

King did not travel with the team to Arizona for its two exhibition games against the Cubs on Monday and Tuesday, but he remains a possibility to be included on the Opening Day roster. The left-handed reliever struggled early on this spring but was unscored upon in his final three Grapefruit League appearances before an illness cropped up.

  • Cardinals' Lars Nootbaar: Takes soft-toss Sunday and Monday

Nootbaar (ribs) took soft-toss swings Sunday and Monday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol saw video of Nootbaar's workouts and said the outfielder "looked really good" and "his body is responding well." Nootbaar will begin the season on the injured list with two non-displaced fractures in his left ribcage, but the hope remains that he won't be out long. He will be eligible for activation for the team's home opener on April 4.

  • Cardinals' Dylan Carlson: Set to open in center field

Carlson is projected to be the Cardinals' Opening Day center fielder, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Carlson hit .271 with three home runs and 13 RBI over 17 contests in Grapefruit League play. That proved to be just enough to fend off a fierce challenge from Victor Scott, who will begin the season in the minors. Carlson's time as the primary center fielder could be temporary -- he'll be there while Tommy Edman (wrist) begins the season on the injured list after some setbacks in his recovery from surgery.

  • Cardinals' Sonny Gray: Pitching in MiLB game Thursday

Gray (hamstring) is scheduled to pitch in another minor-league game Thursday, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The Cardinals recently announced Gray will begin the season on the injured list, but he'll continue ramping up his throwing in minor-league action. The veteran right-hander could join St. Louis when first eligible during the second week of April.

  • Cardinals' Mike Siani: Opening season in MLB

Siani will be on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Siani put together a solid spring, slashing .306/.432/.389 with nine runs scored across 44 plate appearances, and injuries to Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Tommy Edman (wrist) likely played a factor when deciding to keep Siani on the roster for Opening Day. Siani will most likely come off the bench while he's with St. Louis, and he will likely head to Triple-A Memphis once Nootbaar or Edman return from the IL.

  • Cardinals' John King: Won't pitch Saturday

King will not pitch in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals due to an illness, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 29-year-old lefty should return to the mound in a few days once he's recovered from his illness. After giving up seven runs on 14 hits and six walks over his first six spring training games, King has not allowed a run over his last three appearances.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Moves to minors camp

The Cardinals reassigned Scott to minor-league camp Saturday.

Scott entered camp with a very low chance of making the Opening Day roster after finishing last season in Double-A. However, he showed plenty of promise with a .316 batting average and four stolen bases over 10 games this spring. The speedy 23-year-old will likely open the season in Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Jared Young: Optioned to Memphis

The Cardinals optioned Young to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Young has slashed .210/.290/.435 across 69 plate appearances in his MLB career, but a .353 OPS during spring training will send him back to the minors for the start of the season. Young found plenty of success with the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate last season, and a return to form at the plate could help him reach the majors again during his first season with the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals' Alfonso Rivas: Sent to minors

The Cardinals optioned Rivas to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Rivas only managed seven hits in 36 at-bats during his first spring with the Cards while driving in three RBI and scoring six runs. The 27-year-old also only carried a .229 batting average across 48 major-league games last season, but his average jumped up to .332 over 58 games in Triple-A.

  • Cardinals' Luken Baker: Optioned to Triple-A

The Cardinals optioned Baker to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Baker was never able to get his bat going this spring, tallying nine hits in 44 at-bats while striking out 13 times. Baker slashed .334/.439/.720 with 33 homers and 98 RBI in Triple-A last season, and if he's able to find his swing again in the minors, he may return to the Cardinals' bench at some point this summer.

  • Cardinals' Nick Robertson: Optioned to Memphis

The Cardinals optioned Robertson to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Robertson has posted a 4.50 ERA across eight innings this spring, but the Cardinals will need to see a larger sample from him before adding him to their bullpen. The 25-year-old right-hander logged a 6.04 ERA and 1.75 WHIP across 22.1 frames last season between the Red Sox and Dodgers.

  • Cardinals' Lars Nootbaar: Starting season on IL

Nootbaar (ribs) will begin the season on the injured list, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

This was always the likely outcome, but the Cardinals didn't make it official until now. Nootbaar is making progress in his recovery from two non-displaced fractures in his left ribcage and the hope remains that he won't have to miss too much time. A more specific timeline for his return has not been revealed, however. The Cards are likely to use a combination of Alec Burleson and Brendan Donovan in left field while Nootbaar is out, with Dylan Carlson also a possibility if Victor Scott makes the Opening Day roster as the starting center fielder.

  • Cardinals' Matthew Liberatore: Moving to bullpen

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Friday that Liberatore will work out of the bullpen to begin the season, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 24-year-old was attempting to win a spot in St. Louis' season-opening rotation, but Zack Thompson will instead fill in while Sonny Gray (hamstring) is on the injured list. Liberatore started in 11 of his 22 big-league appearances last season and could work as a swingman again in 2024.

  • Cardinals' Zack Thompson: Taking Gray's rotation spot

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol announced Friday that Thompson will be a member of the club's season-opening rotation, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Veteran Sonny Gray (hamstring) will begin the season on the injured list, opening the door for Thompson to earn a rotation spot. The southpaw pitched well during spring training with a 2.81 ERA and 14:6 K:BB across 16 innings, but Thompson will likely only get a few starts to stake his claim to a more permanent rotation spot since Gray isn't expected to have a lengthy absence.

  • Cardinals' Sonny Gray: Opening on injured list

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol announced Friday that Gray (hamstring) will begin the season on the injured list, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The Cardinals have kept door open for Gray to make a start during the first week of the season since he went down with a hamstring strain in early March, but the right-hander will end up requiring a trip to the injured list. The 34-year-old was scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Friday before being scratched due to a heavy forecast of rain, and that session has now been rescheduled for Saturday, per Worthy. Gray is poised to pitch three times in Florida, including Saturday, before joining the Cardinals, so he should be ready for his season debut by early April.

  • Cardinals' Victor Scott: Absent from roster projection

Scott is not included in the Cardinals' Opening Day roster projection by Katie Woo of The Athletic.

Scott entered camp with seemingly little-to-no shot to make the team, but his performance (.316/.409/.368, four steals) combined with injuries to Tommy Edman (wrist) and Lars Nootbaar (ribs) have put him very much in the conversation. However, with Dylan Carlson also having a good spring and Nootbaar not expected to miss much time, the Cards figure to stick to the original plan and give Scott more seasoning in the minors. The speedy fifth-round pick in 2022 stole 94 bases between High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield last year, and if he indeed doesn't crack St. Louis' Opening Day roster, he would be in line to begin 2024 at Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Sonny Gray: Not pitching due to rain

Gray (hamstring) won't pitch as scheduled in a minor-league game Friday due to heavy rain in the forecast, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Considering that Gray is returning from a strained hamstring, it's not a surprise the Cardinals want to avoid him pitching in poor conditions. The 34-year-old was scheduled to cover two innings and will likely make up those reps against hitters sometime this weekend. Gray won't be starting Opening Day, but manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday it's still possible the right-hander avoids a trip to the injured list and makes a start during the first week of the season.
