Top ways to experience Ile Saint-Louis
The area
Neighborhood: Ile de la Cité / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

We stayed on Ile Saint-Louis for a month this late summer/fall and absolutely loved it. It's quiet and quaint. To me, it's an honor to stay on this island. It feels like a small town within Paris. It's got local shops and artisans that makes the area feel like home. I'd definitely recommend staying here in a hotel or vacation rental if you are visiting. It's central to all of Paris and close to metro and bus stops. I didn't want to leave! I could live on this island forever. It's wonderful. Writing this now makes me sad that our vacation ended and we had to go home, because this place now feels like my second home.

We decided to spend one of our days in Paris taking a slow, casual walking tour, enjoy cafe and a croissant and a light lunch. Ile Saint-Louis, a small island neighborhood across from the island of Cite, became an excellent choice. Lots of nice architecture, small shops and cafes, and markets that offered some great bread, sausages, vegetables and such to be enjoyed back at our hotel later that evening. Also some great views of Notre-Dame during its reconstruction. Be sure to sample a gelato or sweet at the world famous Bertillon at its original home on Ile Saint-Louis. (Our actual visit was in late May 2019)

We walked through some of the narrow streets of Ile Saint-Louis and just looked around. There are several cafes, restaurants and a range of other small shops. We had coffee at one of the cafes. This area seemed to be rather quiet and somehow a little more relaxed than the rest of the city. Worth wandering around for a while if you can spare the time. You will be surrounded by the waters of the Seine River!

This is a part of the city that one must visit, walk around the island and admire the great architecture. A walking tour, even self-guided, is a great idea because so many important people once lived here. I once rented an apartment here and it was like a village at that time. Now if is the realm of tourists and ice cream, but the incredible architecture and history remain.

Paris at Christmas time was a blast. Weather was around freezing for the first couple of days, but then the rain came and it went up to around 50F/10C. Christmas markets all over town. The best ones were at les Tuileries, l'Hotel de Ville, and la Tour Eiffel. Beware that the goods at those markets, including the food, are priced much higher than elsewhere.

I went to Paris lle Saint Louis city apartment and stayed for 4 days. I paid extra €400 damage warranty and it took them 3 months to refund me although they promised to do so in 15 days! The costumer service was terrible and egoistic!

The charming and magnificent Ile will appeal to any lover of romance and history. Each architectural structure has a rich history and exquisite appearance. Be sure to walk the streets of the island, where famous writers once walked, and today live the richest people in Paris.
There are famous hotels in the form of chic private mansions, which were a refuge for great people. Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau once stayed at the Hotel Lambert from the 17th century, and at the Hotel Lozen, formerly owned by the Richelieu family, you will immerse yourself in the historic atmosphere where Theophile Gauthier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, Delacroix and Alexander Duma. Gauthier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Baizak, Delacroix and Alexander Duma.
There are amazing restaurants, beautiful art galleries.

We once lived on this island, home of exquisite Renaissance architecture. Take a slow walk around the quais and read the marks telling which famous people lived in the beautiful houses. Now the central shopping street is now longer a village atmosphere, now the land of ice cream Still beautiful.

This wonderful little island, near the heart of Paris, is worthy of your time. We spent a few hours here and absolutely LOVED it! The island is located literally a couple of blocks from main Paris thoroughfares. The streets are relatively and filled with nice shops and restaurants. As you stroll the streets or enjoy a glass of wine outside, people walk by with their carriages or pups on a leash, just enjoying the ambiance of the neighborhood. When we visit Paris again, we will definitely try to stay here in Ile Saint-Louis.

My husband and I will be visiting Paris this Fall. We're staying on I'le Saint-Louis. We will, of course, be doing a lot of sight seeing in Paris, but are wondering if anyone has favorite places to eat on I'le Saint-Louis that they could recommend. A good place for breakfast? Nice, but reasonable, spot for lunch? Nice dinner? A quiet little late night jazz place? Thanks very much!

I was walking with my sister around the Ile de Saint Louis, and just turned to a small street, there was a small family café with 4 or 5 tables on the street. it was noon, I saw the a smiling Madame and she invited us to lunch. I asked her if they have onion soup at this hour, ( in Paris most restaurants serve onion soup after 3 p.m. She said, Yes sure, if you can wait 20-30 minutes, I can cook it for you. It was the best onion soup I ever ate

There really isn't much to do for children. It is a small island that is famous for its apartment buildings and is pleasant to walk around. It is an expensive area to live. There is a famous ice cream shop Berthillon, boutiques and there are plenty of sidewalk cafés and some restaurants. Some are expensive but there are a few that aren't. There isn't really anything for children to do, in my opinion. There are many artists on the bridge (Pont) to the island and the children might enjoy that. Some do magic tricks and many play music. Depends on the day. I recommend going back to the left bank across from Notre Dame (which is really worth a visit) and eating there. You will find plenty of shops selling things and lots of outdoor sidewalk cafes. Also, the boat trips around the island are much more interesting.

I love to visit old churches when I travel. What is the name of the church you heard the church bells ringing from in the lle Saint Louis? Is it difficult to get to that area by public transportation? I'm going to Paris next month and looking for unique and interesting places to visit, off the beaten path of all the tourists. Places I can take great, memorable pictures.

I stayed on Saint Louis Island recently and found it the best and most central spot to stay....to go walking and metro around all of Paris. I have been before and didn't need to do the tourist places... I just picked up a map and off I went. Notre Dame is the beautiful church at the gateway to Saint Louis..a must. Wondering through the laneways in the Latin Quarter, close by is a have for pics.
