I don't know where to begin reviewing this hotel. It is down a small entry alley off of a small main street in Prague, on the same side of the river as Prague Castle. It is quiet and hidden, and an absolute gem. The Augustine is an old converted monastary, and they have done a great job with it as a hotel. The Augustine restaurant is nice, with good food, although a little pricey for lunch (unless you have the bar menu). Nevertheless, the food was good, and we sat outside in the beautiful weather in the pretty courtyard, enjoying our meal. One of the bartenders in the Refrectory bar remembered us each day! The staff of the hotel are all so supportive and helpful, from check-in to check-out. Housekeeping is great, and they provide turn down service each night. The rooms are comfortable and the marble bathroom floors are heated (at least ours was!). The tub/shower combination is deep, so it does make it a little difficult to climb in and out of, but the flip side of that is that the tub is deep enough for you to take a nice warm soak in after a day of walking around the city. The bathroom also has a bidet in it, and the towels were hung on a heated towel rack attached to the wall. We had a king size bed, and it was very comfortable. There is a small coffee service in the room, and we were given a string of small sausages and a big, bready pretzel when we arrived in our room. Bottles of water were left in the room each night, complimentary. There was a very small gym, but it was fine and I was able to get some exercise (other than walking!). The staff at the concierge desk are second to none. I have traveled to many places all over the world, and stayed in beautiful properties, but the concierges at the Augustine are superior. They knew us by name, saying hello to us each time they saw us. They helped us make dinner reservations at some of the nicest restaurants in Prague (including one with a Michelen star), they arranged private tours for us, and made all kinds of wonderful suggestions for us. They even allowed me to practice my few words of Czech language on them! Our room was nice and quiet, there were bathrobes and slippers in the room, and an International edition of the NY Times was delivered every morning. The key card was needed to be put into the slot on the wall for the electric and air to work, but that is fairly standard at most places in Europe.
The hotel is across the river from the Old Town square, but it is an excellent location, walkable to almost everywhere in Prague. It's almost literally at the base of the hill that Prague Castle sits on, and is a 2 minute walk to the Charles Bridge. We took a cab only 1 night, and that was when we went out for a nicer dinner and didn't want to walk on the cobblestones in my nicer shoes!
If you want a hotel with extraordinary service, un-fussy luxury, and in a quiet part of town, but near everything you want to see, then you must stay at the Augustine! Can't wait to go back!
