As Head Master and as a parent, I’m passionate about a school environment where happy children can thrive and be themselves.
What’s St Andrew’s like? First and foremost, it’s a warm and welcoming school with a family atmosphere, where every child feels valued. Academic attainment and outstanding pastoral care are synonymous with St Andrew’s and the children move on to a range of top day and boarding schools at 13+, with some awarded scholarships. All of this is done with a sense of proportion: my motto is that children should be ‘stretched, not stressed’ and enjoy learning, and be considerate, cheerful and well-rounded when they finish their time here.

I have an open-door policy for both pupils and parents, and always prioritise listening to feedback and making sure that we constantly evolve as a school, whilst remaining true to our traditions and values. I’m very proud of how hard our staff work, and everything that our pupils achieve, whether it’s academic, sporting, co-curricular, through the Arts or just being a good friend and kind person.
One thing we’re known for is a love of the great outdoors. Making extensive use of our grounds and the sense of freedom and wellbeing this creates is an important element of a St Andrew’s education. My wife Olivia and I live onsite, next to the main school, with our two children Fergus and Martha, along with our Bedlington Terrier, Polo, and our chickens. Several of our residential staff also have pets, and visiting parents are welcome to walk their dogs on a lead around our beautiful grounds.
