The area
Neighborhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

    Area rich in history ....
Josefov is a quarter in Prague , that is most known for the location of the former Jewish Ghetto. It is visited by many tourists from all over the world. Uniquely preserved, it is a site of the Old Jewish cemetery, the synagogues, the museum. Josefov is just a small part of Prague , but important part of its history. Prague jewish population prior to the Nazi occupation in 1939 was over fifty thousand Today only few thousands jews live in Prague. Thousands perished in the concentration camps. In the Pinkas Synagogue, names of thousands are handwritten on walls. Floor to ceiling, often families , with their date of birth and death. It truly is overwhelming and it took several years to finish. The display of the life of the children in Terezin concentration camp is heartbreaking. There are long lines to purchase tickets. They are many combinations available to cover the visit. A combination ticket may be best value, as you can return over a period of few days. It all depends , obviously, how much time you have. My husband and I were staying in the Four Seasons Hotel, for part of our trip, we had enough time to wander around and return to places we have been before. In contrast to the rich jewish history, in other part of Josefov is the famous Parizska ( Paris ) street with the most beautiful buildings and luxury shopping. After the communist regime fell this street took on a major transformation. Buildings were restored, renovated and expensive designer stores appeared .Quite a few excellent restaurants opened up too. Because of Josefov close proximity to Staromestske namesti, most tourist will find their way there.

Memory of people who disapered in consentrantion camps of WWII
Josefov or Jewish quarter is a one of places, where you can see what people build and where their life and life of future generations were ended. it is very sad to see places like this which remind Jews without them. Jews were integrated part of Prague and Czech until recatholisation and real Jewish life ended here by Nazis, who had belts with buckles, where was written "God with us"! This place and Teresin jail have to be visited by everyone to remind and not forget what was happen to avoid it in future.

    Meaningful visit with Yvonne Weisgrab
One of the most beautiful Jewish Quarters in Europe. Unlike other Europes capitals, the Jewish heritage here still stands. You will see many synagogues and unique Jewish cemetery from the middle ages. I would recommend going with a guide to get an in-depth understanding of the place. Up on family member recommendation, we chose Yvonne Weisgrab from Terezin Private Tours and we couldn't be happier with the choice. She is a very knowledgeable researcher and will make history come alive with her explanation. Instead of selling cheap legends about magical creatures, she gave us an excellent overview of Jewish history in Prague. I truly recommend doing the tour with her.

We were not sure how to approach this very busy area of Prague. It is not far from the Old Town Square and the small streets are full of people. school groups and other tours. Guards at the synagogues would say this is Number so-and-so on your tour...but we didn't know we were to be on a tour. When we eventually found the cemetery, we realized we needed to buy an admission ticket to be able to enter that and other historic spots in the Quarter...so go there first! The small and very crowded cemetery is a very special spot in the Quarter. Be advised you CAN NOT take photos there and can not just look into it from the side. There are walls all around it and you must pay for the admission if you want to see it . That ticket then allows you access to other spots in the Quarter including the Pinkas, Maisel and Klausen Synagogues. The Old-New Synagogue is not covered in the basic ticket.
You receive a map with the ticket, we did not get the audio tour and found the explanations at each stop to give us enough information. There are tour operators on every corner offering trips to Terezin, a private tour of the quarter, etc. There are lots of souvenir shops also.

Josefov is Prague's Jewish Quarter located between the Old Town Square and the Vltava River.

The horrible history of this former Jewish Ghetto began already in the 13th century when Jewish people were ordered to vacate their homes and settle in this area.

Most significant historical buildings have luckily been saved from destruction. There are six synagogues.

The stunning Old-New Synagogue was built in the 13th century in early Gothic style. It is the oldest preserved synagogue in Central Europe.

The Jewish Quarter is also the birthplace of the very known Bohemian Jewish novelist Franz Kafka.

Not for everyone but a ton to learn and be grateful for while taking in history and being thankful. Be prepared for some entry fees but if you are a history and beauty, its well worth it.

Everything of interest in Josefov is inside, or enclosed, like the cemetary and the old-new synagogue. For the rest there isn't much too see here. Not exactly cheap either. When we visited we kind of hiccuped when confronted with the 200 Kč (per person!) access fee for the little old-new synagogue. In the end we decided to skip this area.

Visiting the Josefov (Old Jewish Quarter) is a must for Jews and non-Jews alike. Once one of the most important and influential Jewish community in Europe has almost totally annihilated in the Holocaust, and its buildings, institutes and graveyard are standing as a memorial for those who perished. Visit to the various sites open a window to the huge contribution of the Jewish community and to its rich cultural and religious life.
A combined ticket to all the sites can be purchased at any site for the cost of 500 CZK.

The cemetery, synagogue, and the square are all exaggerated. Nothing special to see, only a mediocre historical place.

The Old Jewish cemetery with its green mossed, en masse of tombstones a stark reminder of the history here. The synagogues are all easily walked and provide great insight into the Holocaust and medieval times.

We visited on our own the quarter. You can buy the ticket that gives you access to several places in the quarter at any of the point of interest. We started at the synagogue. It was a very moving visit, especially the temple with all the names of the people that die during the Holocaust.

I'm married to a jewish man, his grandparents were on one of last ships out of Latvia. This tour really hit home, as many as said, even if you aren't jewish, it is so worth the effort to go and witness this piece of timeless history. My mom and I shed a couple of tears as we viewed the harsh realities of war, but it was good to see, good to know.

Or even if it isn’t, the Jewish Quarter of Prague is worth your time. We were there through a Viking Cruise Extension trip so we were on their tour and happened to have an excellent guide. It was a couple of weeks ago already and memory fades but the Old Synagogue was such a deep feeling - stepping back in time to this particular culture, to these people, to this architecture. So while, yes, there is “the plight” of the Jewish people, there is also a culture to be felt. With the old cemetery, here there is both the tragedy, but once again a People, a language, an alphabet, names, history. It is definitely worth a visit.
