About
The most significant square of historical Prague, it was founded in the 12th century and has been witness to many historical events. In addition to the Old Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the square is dominated by the Baroque Church of St Nicholas, the Rococo Kinský Palace, the Gothic House at the Stone Bell and the monument to Jan Hus. In the pavement of the square are memorial stones marking the execution of 27 Czech lords in 1621, and the Prague meridian.

Neighbourhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

- Ginges_revengeBrisbane, Australia4,732 contributionsGreat old town square that exudes agelessness and history and amazing buildings. The old town square or Staromestske Namesti is an amazing busy place at most times of the day. It gradually builds in people density from the morning up until late into the evening. There is always a crowd around the astronomical clock which builds up to when it goes off at the hour mark. It can be hard to get through sometimes. The crowds will get bigger in peak times as we were there in the shoulder season. There is a lot of restaurants around the edges of the square which are touristy and expensive. If you do some research, there are some great restaurants just off the square that offer better food at more reasonable prices. Its a nice place with cobblestones and some nice monuments. This place has been a center for commerce and visitors for centuries. Some history that we don't have in Australia. Its worth going there to see it and feel the atmosphere of history that abounds in a beautiful old square.Visited February 2023Written 27 March 2023
- Michaela S7 contributionsAmazingloved it! Prague is absolutely unique! Very historical and mindblowing history! We have enjoyed every second here and I am very impressed by the oldest functional astronomical clock on the Old Town square! Very friendly atmosphere and we will definitely be back!Visited March 2023Written 6 April 2023
- ericmCaliCalifornia7 contributionsAwe-Inspiring Beauty and HistoryI was absolutely blown away by the beauty and history of Staromestské námestí in Prague. The square is surrounded by incredible architecture that dates back centuries, and it truly feels like stepping back in time. The iconic astronomical clock is a must-see, and the square itself is bustling with activity from street performers to market vendors. I highly recommend taking a guided tour to learn even more about the history and significance of this stunning place. It's a perfect spot to relax and people-watch with a cup of coffee or a Czech beer. I can't wait to come back and spend more time exploring this incredible place.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2023
- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,050 contributionsThe Very Heart of PragueThis "old town" square is indeed the very heart of this beautiful city. The square is surrounded by gorgeous churches, fabulous restaurants and bars, museums, and shops. Crowds are always a factor here unless you visit very early or later in the day. Note that the crowds get heavier near the top of each hour as people gather to witness the "show" from the old clock. If you can deal with the crowds, you will find this area to be full of ways to enjoy old Prague.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 April 2023

- CristinelRomania196 contributionsBeautiful areaIt is, for sure, number one place to be visited in Prague. Guarded by other impressive buildings, monuments and having a lot of restaurants and terraces around, it is large enough to offer you a little bit of space in the crowd. It is a must in Prague.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 August 2023
- ItchyFeetCamarillo, California7,752 contributionsAmazing architectureWe stayed at the Marriott hotel and this City Center Square is only two blocks away. The Tyn church, astronomical clock, Saint Nicholas church, the Powder Tower, and the theater building are all right here together. This area has amazing architecture and it’s fun to just wander around and take pictures especially later in the day and in the evening when the lights come on.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 31 August 2023

I will always remember reading my book ('The Unbearable Lightness of Being' by Milan Kundera; a great book to read in Prague) in the square, intermittently pausing and looking up to simply enjoy the spectacular buildings. I honestly prefer the square at night; the lights make the buildings breathtakingly beautiful.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 6 September 2023

Night we had dinner in a restaurant in front of the astronomical clock. Must visit this place at night. This place gives a Renaissance vibes. - Sean JManchester, United Kingdom116 contributionsVery Busy , but such a Beautiful SquareWe arrived for our 4 day stay on the Saturday afternoon , checked in and walked about 15 minutes into the Square from our Hotel. It is stunning to be fair , the architecture , statues , churches and endless array of lovely little restaurants dotted about the Square give it an undeniably touristy feel without losing its identity , and of course the 600 year old Astronomical Clock. As I said it was a Saturday afternoon when we first visited and it was really busy , we got into the Square just before the hourly show on the clock and it was almost impossible to get anywhere near the clock , but that's irrelevant , you still get to see it and it really is amazing to watch something so old still doing its thing....Over the course of our stay we walked through the Square numerous times , stopping for Dinner or just having a drink as we were passing through , sometimes not as busy and sometimes as busy. It's definitely worth a visit , there is a lovely feel to the Old Town Square ...EnjoyVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023

Be prepared when you visit Prague in January. It is snowing and oh! So cold, but worth every minute of it. I just love the architecture, the mystery it holds, the sacredness of this place. From my hotel balcony, the view is
so beautiful, early morning and at night time. Stroll through the interesting city as you enjoy Lots of vendors, restaurants, souvenir shops, cafes and amazing sculptures. Take time to witness the astronomical clock. Word of caution, keep your belongings close to you, as there are many people side by side, waiting for the clock to strike.

The square is a great place to go to for pictures of antique architecture. The famous clock is there, and you get a great view of the old Prague city gate. It's especially interesting during the holidays when decorations are set.

A beautiful square to visit with so much to see and take in. Loaded with history and a pleasure to walk around this square. Also, home to the astronomical clock, which is a must see. No visit to Prague would be complete without visiting this square and meandering through the surrounding streets.

We stayed nearby and loved the vibrancy of this square.
Yes it can get very busy but there is so much to do in this square.
You have the astronomical clock, bars and restaurants, horse stalls selling smoked meat and lots more.
During our stay on the last few days we experienced some light snow which really enhanced the atmosphere.

Any visit to Prague is not complete without visiting this square at the heart of the city. The main attraction is the astronomical clock. If you want to see the astronomical clock in action, make sure to claim a spot 10-15 minutes before the top of the hour as there were large crowds every hour even on a chilly November weekday. There were many restaurants in the square, though prices were predictably higher than other parts of Prague. The Charles Bridge is a short 10 minute walk from the square.

For the first time I looked out onto Staroměstské náměstí coming from the south-east side, from Železná street. In this way the square suddenly opens up to the gaze, leaving you almost amazed by its beauty and majesty.
Arriving from Železná Street, the first element drawing attention is not - on your left - the famous clock tower, packed with people especially at the moment (every hour) when the clock with the animated figures comes into operation. The gaze is instead drawn above all towards the more open side of the square, on the north-east side, where the façade of the Church of Our Lady before Týn rises, tall and magical, behind and above a curtain of Renaissance-style porticoed buildings. The beauty of the church, the beauty of the buildings, the unusual position of the church - which doesn't overlook the square, but almost appears to "surveil" the square itself - appeared to me from the first visit to be the most unusual, and therefore most fascinating, side of the square: a feeling confirmed in my visits in the following days.
Then, obviously, the attentive visitor will not overlook the other elements of the square. If he has adequate information stuff (for example a detailed guide) he will want to discover, for example, the characteristics of the individual buildings overlooking the square. He will abandon himself to the spectacle of the mechanical clock. He will appreciate the exterior and interior of the baroque church of St. Nicholas, on the northwest side. He will be amazed by the art nouveau statue and monument of Ian Hus, which will confirm his belief that the Czech people are non-conformist (as well as pleasantly ingenious). He will be confirmed in this belief by the observation of the spot which recalls the beheading of twenty-seven Czech nobles and bourgeois of reformed religion after the reconquest of the city by the Habsburgs in 1621.
I could go on. But I think I have given you the idea of why this square, in addition to being one of the most beautiful in Europe, is one of the symbolic places of Prague.

Beautiful but overcrowded day and night. Impossible to find a reasonably priced restaurant with local food without prior reservations especially if you want to eat after 5 pm . Whatever is available is occupied by locals who are hugging tables for hours.

I'd like to visit both the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge early in the morning before they get crowded, so I can take some uncrowded photos. Would it be best to visit Old Town Square earlier or Charles Bridge earlier to take best advantage of lack of crowds (I'd be visiting both the same morning, just need to figure out the best order). Also how early is a good time to show up? Being there for the clock show won't be necessary as we'll see it another day. This is mainly for basic photography, possibly including sunrise if I make it that early in September (sunrise is close to 7am). Thanks!

The photos from Charles Bridge should be beautiful, especially when it’s quiet. To be certain, It probably is best to go there first and then on to Old Square. Before 8 a.m. the Square should not be too crowded either. Prague is beautiful, I hope you have a wonderful time, just as we did.

Pozdrawiam:)
