Job overview

South Hampstead High School, the 2022 Independent Girls’ School of the Year, is seeking to appoint a dynamic, energetic and inspirational Physics teacher to lead a strong and successful Physics department.

As Head of Physics, you will contribute to whole school policy-making and strategic planning. You will lead and manage the department, motivating and empowering its members to ensure high performance standards are achieved and maintained. You will teach the subject to highly motivated and talented pupils from Year 7 to 13 and be actively involved in promoting interest in Physics and contributing to the broader life of the school by supporting and leading curricular and extra-curricular events.

The Science Department is a lively, well-resourced, and outward-looking department with a team of sixteen teachers. There are 9 well-equipped laboratories and generous allowance for chemicals and equipment, texts and library books.

Students at South Hampstead are bright, engaged and committed Scientists. They value scholarship, academic rigour and, as a result, are a genuine pleasure to teach.

We have small classes of students with genuine interest and passion for the subject. Science-related undergraduate courses are a popular choice for our students, with a high proportion applying to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and other top universities. Recent leavers have gone on to study Physics & Astronomy, Biomedical Sciences and Mechanical Engineering.

Alongside your first-class subject knowledge and ability to teach Physics to A Level, you will also possess excellent leadership skills that will have been gained through your experience e.g., as a Deputy Head of Department. With a passion for the subject, and an ability to enthuse pupils, the successful candidate will show considerable initiative and innovation both in the classroom and in Physics.
