Known for their swimming abilities, the Newfoundland has webbed feet and a coat that is resistant to water. Originally from Canada, these dogs are intelligent and strong, loyal to their owners, and loving. They are known for being “gentle giants” and are excellent with children, earning them the nickname “nanny dog”. This breed was made famous in “Peter Pan”, by the children’s guardian Nana. Those who are considering this dog need to be aware that it loves to swim and will attempt to rescue those who are drowning, even if it has not been trained to do so. Their large size makes them difficult for smaller households to manage.
