Peaky Blinders: What happened to Sergeant Moss? Why did he not appear in season 5?

PEAKY BLINDERS features a number of characters who appear intermittently across its seasons, including Sergeant Moss of the Birmingham Police Force. However despite appearing in the previous four, he did not return for the fifth outing earlier this year - so what happened to him?

Peaky Blinders: Alfie Solomon returns and meets Tommy Shelby

Peaky Blinders season 5 returned earlier this year with another outing for Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) and his family. However, not everyone was back for the latest outing of the series as familiar face Sergeant Moss (Tony Pitts) did not make a return. Some fans were left wondering what happened to him and whether he could come back again.

What happened to Sergeant Moss in Peaky Blinders?

First introduced in season one as a police officer in Birmingham, Moss played a key role in the early outings.

When Inspector Campbell (Sam Neill) comes to Birmingham to deal with a missing shipment of arms, Moss and his police force come under scrutiny.

However, while the officer is not a fan of the corruption of the Peaky Blinders in his city, he comes to blows with Campbell over his methods.

This developed in the second and third season when he was seen more and more to be in the pocket of the Blinders.

He is bribed to drop investigations and not hold patrols in certain areas of Birmingham.

He has a promotion coming into season four when viewers seem him introduce himself as Inspector Moss.

His last appearance in the show was in episode five of the fourth series after Tommy’s stand-off with Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody).

In the tense scene, Moss says to Tommy he will not take his bribes any more to clean up his mess.

Moss did not make an appearance in season five of the show, which was released at the end of August.

However, he is mentioned at one point in the story off screen.

After Inspector Younger is killed in episode five, Tommy calls Moss for help on the phone.

His absence left some fans sad to not see him in the latest series.

Reddit user AlbionsSeed said: “He was mentioned in Season Five but not seen. He is missed.”

“He’s still around in the story, we just never see him on screen,” user Peakyf****Blinder added.

ClockworkMansion added: “That’s a darn shame. Love that character.”

Actor Tony Pitts has not revealed why he didn’t appear in the latest season, but he has been busy playing other roles.

Since appearing on the BBC show, he has been in a number of hit televisions series.

This includes playing Lennox in MotherFatherSon, DCS Hargreaves in Line of Duty and Keith Metcalfe in Wild Bill.

The actor has also appeared as Captain Pterro in Star Wars film Rogue One and as Sgt. Martin in War Horse.

Given his character is still alive in the world of Peaky Blinders, it could be possible Moss will be back for another outing.

Writer Steven Knight has revealed he has already written the six season, with production expected to begin early next year.

Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer
