What is the typical weather in Frankfurt in late August to early September? Hot and humid? What is the usual humidity level? I would like to be able to pack the proper clothes for the weather and avoid overpacking. Thank you all for your input!

It can still be quite warm (>25°C) and afternoon thunderstorms or heavy showers are not uncommon. Shouldn't get colder than 15°C. Definitely bring a light jacket/rainjacket and a light sweater for cooler evenings.
Thank you! Your response is very helpful. Shorts and dresses in the suitcase then :)
macandmini --- I caught you over on the Puerto Vallarta forum (thanks for posting there) and noticed you here, since I have a connection to the area.
My son and family live right outside Frankfurt. I FACETIME with them once a week. Every week, we talk about the weather and they go outside and show me what's going on. Also, I've been there twice to visit recently, once during the month of September. They mention "overcast and gloomy" fairly often.
I would make plenty of room in your suitcase for some long pants, long-sleeved and 3/4-length tops (lightweight) and good walking shoes.
It's not a consistent "shorts and dresses" climate. You might be surprised. In fact, when I was there the month of September, 2013, it rained half the time and the rain wasn't warm. "Layering" was the best mode of dress. Other than my son, who wears those *man-shorts* with the cargo pockets, I saw nobody wearing shorts. August might be different.
Climate anywhere is fairly unpredictable these days but since my family and I talk about the weather in the Frankfurt area weekly (and they've been there for 3 years), please make sure to pack other clothes besides shorts and dresses. Just for an example, the rainy/cloudy September was followed by a couple of nice (non-rainy, with blue sky and cool) two weeks the beginning of October. They tell me it's hard to predict but they're not used to the regular overcast and drippy.
Be prepared for both.
MarlySF, thank you for the very extensive and informative response. When we went to Hilo, Hawaii last summer, we learned that even in a forecasted hot and humid day, mother nature tend to be unpredictable. I usually carry a packable jacket and yoga pants for the just-in-case situations but after reading your response, i'll definitely bring layering pieces.
I've been to Frankfurt and a couple other cities in Germany several years ago but it was in the spring season and the weather was perfect for jeans and t-shirt and a light jacket.
Late August/Early September are usually the best times in regards of weather. Usually mid 20's and partly cloudy. It can get hot aswell, but not really cold.
If you are in Frankfurt the last week of August, make sure to go to the Mainriver and enjoy the Museumsufererfest, a huge cultural festival with 20+stages of live music and performances
Edited: 8 years agoThank you, Alex. It was actually a pleasant surprise to know that at the time we'll visit Frankfurt, the Museumsuferfest will be in full swing!
Hi Marly,
Just got back from Frankfurt. On our first 3 days, the weather was hot but not humid. It was the perfect weather for the museumsuferfest! Shorts and short sleeve shirts with a pair of good walking shoes/sandals were the perfect outfit.
Beginning on our 4th day and onwards, we experienced the "typical' weather you described. Chilly mornings, comfortable mid-afternoons and again, chilly evenings. Thank goodness we brought long pants and light sweaters. We had about 2 days of clouds and intermittent rainshowers. Nothing major, but it was significant enough to force us to buy cheap umbrellas since our hoods.
We also did a couple of day trips (Bad Homburg and Heidelberg) and boy, were we glad that we had our packable jackets (LLBean) in our bags :)
So, for this trip, the clothes I packed allowed for layering and the unpredictable weather. These are:
2 pairs of long pants
2 shorts
2 long dresses
2 short sleeve shirts
2 three-quarter sleeve cardigans
2 short sleeve shirts
a lightweight suede jacket
a packable jacket (LLBean)
2 lightweight scarves
2 good walking shoes (Keen/ El Naturalista)
