Selena Gomez has another big acting role coming up—and this one will send her most twisted message about social media yet. According to Deadline, Gomez will be starring in Spiral, a psychological thriller directed by her friend Petra Collins. Drake will executive-produce.

Per the outlet, Spiral “follows a former influencer whose addiction to social media is causing her body to literally fall apart. Phoebe Fisher penned the most recent version with Collins and Melissa Broder penning a previous draft.”

Here’s everything known about the project so far:

Spiral is being shopped out to streaming services.

Will Netflix get the Spiral? Or Hulu, where Gomez’s upcoming series Only Murders in the Building is coming out? That’s to be determined. According to Deadline, sales agent Endeavor Content “is out to all major streamers with the package.”

Collins and Gomez have worked together in the past and have spoken about their love of horror films.

Gomez and Collins met in 2015 when Collins shot Gomez for Wonderland magazine and interviewed her for that issue. They became close friends.

Collins also directed Gomez’s horror movie-inspired music video “Fetish” back in 2017:

Collins spoke to Vanity Fair in May 2017 about the duo’s love of horror films—a genre Spiral seems to be rooted in. “I love The Exorcist and the things that come from inside you,” Collins said. “The things that are a little more subtle, and things that you deal with from inwards, and I feel like it’s something Selena and I both love talking about...that topic is sort of dear to us.”

Collins and Gomez are close friends outside of work.

In July 2017, the two spoke to Dazed magazine and described each as being like sisters. This was the exact back and forth they had:

Selena Gomez: I have a lot of insecurities, but when I started working with you… We’re like sisters, but I think I’m a little bit older than you?

Petra Collins: YOU ARE NOT EVEN OLDER THAN ME!

Gomez: You know what I mean! You make me feel more confident about the choices I make, like a sister. You help me, you encourage me and validate how I feel in that moment. I wouldn’t have been able to grow into the artist I am right now without you. It’s like this fire-and-water, duality thing going on.

Collins: We’ve never talked about astrology! I’m definitely a Sagittarius. I’m such a fire sign.

Gomez: I’m such a Cancer, I’m sensitive as fuuuuuck. I feel everything so intensely, which is one of my favorite things about myself. Feeling is something I love.

Gomez has been vocal about how toxic social media has been for her and how she used to be addicted to it, making this role very personal for her.

Gomez has been open about how she does not post on her own Instagram—despite being one of the most-followed women on the platform—because of how toxic social media can be for her and so many others’ mental health. In a March 2021 interview published in Vogue, Gomez spoke about how she has not been on the internet for three years and has an assistant post text and photos she sends to her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

“Everyone always asks me, ‘Are you secretly on; are you lying?’ and I’m like, ‘I have no reason to lie.’” Gomez said.

Gomez told her friend Raquelle Stevens during a 2019 interview with her for Stevens’ Giving Back Generation series that the bullying on Instagram really drove her off the platform.

“I want people to have a good relationship with social media,” Gomez started. “It’s not going anywhere anytime soon. But knowing that real world’s in front of you and trying to pay attention to that is healthy. When I make an effort to post on social media or do what I’m doing, it’s important for me to make sure it’s 100 percent authentic and once I post it, I post it. That’s it…I see so many beautiful girls and amazing different characters and then they’re just demolished by an image that they’re trying to chase. Their wanting to be a completely different person but that’s not what’s inside of them, you know? But I get it. I look at other people’s pages—or I used to—and I’m like, okay, I need to fix myself.”

Gomez told Vogue in 2017 that she had been addicted to Instagram at one point—which led to her decision to get off of it. “As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out,” she explained in 2017. “It had become so consuming to me. It’s what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram. Which is why I’m kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.” That ghosting ultimately led Gomez to cut out social media entirely for her mental health.
