FreeBMD

Search for free in these transcribed Civil Registration indexes of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales from 1837 to 1983. Not everything has been transcribed, but most of the death records have through about 1940. You can see the progess on FreeBMD Deaths here.

FreeREG

FreeREG stands for Free REGisters, and offers free Internet access to baptism, marriage and burial records that have been transcribed from parish and non-conformist registers of the UK by volunteers. The database currently includes over 3.6 million burial records.

FamilySearch Record Search

Search indexes or browse digital images of parish registers from Norfolk, Warwickwhire and Cheshire (among others) to locate burial records. This free site also includes an index to selected England Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991 with 16+ million records (but only a few localities are included).

National Burial Index

The National Burial Index (NBI) for England and Wales is a finding aid to sources held by local repositories, family history societies and groups who are participating in the project. The current edition (3) includes over 18.4 million burial records taken from Anglican parish, non-conformist, Quaker, Roman Catholic and cemetery burial registers throughout England and Wales. Available on CD from FFHS or is online (through subscription) as part of the Birth, Marriage, Death and Parish Records collection at FindMyPast, along with City of London burials and Memorial Inscriptions.

JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR)

This free searchable database of more than 1.3 million names and other identifying information has been drawn from Jewish cemeteries and burial records worldwide. The database includes over 30,000 burial records from England, Scotland and Wales.

Manchester Burial Records

This pay-per-view online service allows you to search records of about 800,000 burials in Manchester dating back to about 1837 relating to Manchester General, Gorton, Philips Park, Blackley and Southern cemeteries. Images of the original burial records are also available.

City of London Cemetery and Crematorium

The City of London has made available high quality images of its earliest burial registers online (1856-1865). Judith Gibbons and Ian Constable have prepared an index to these burial registers, which currently covers June 1856 to March 1859. The City of London site also includes information on its genealogy research service to find information on burials not available online.

The National Archive of Memorial Inscriptions (NAOMI)

Over 193,000 names, drawn from 657+ burial grounds in Norfolk and Bedfordshire are available here, drawn primarily from Church of England parish churchyards, but also from non-conformist registries, some cemeteries and some war memorials. Searches are free (and return full name, date of death and burial location), but a pay-per-view option is required to view the full inscription.

Browse or search burials from selected cemeteries across England. These transcriptions are placed online by volunteers, so there aren't a huge number of cemeteries available, and those cemeteries that are included may not be fully transcribed. Some entries include photographs!
