One Piece Netflix Live-Action Show: Release Date, Trailer, Cast, Plot & More
One of the longest-running, best-selling, and most popular animanga franchises in history, One Piece, is getting a live-action adaptation with Netflix. And while we’re not so sure about the whole thing, based on how Cowboy Bebop ended up, we’re still waiting for the whole thing to start so that we can share our thoughts and opinions with you. Now, while we’re waiting for the show to premiere, we have decided to tell you everything we know and everything you need to know about the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece.
And while Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has been confirmed, we still don’t know when it is going to be released as the streaming service hasn’t provided us with a release window just yet. As far as we know, the first season is going to have 10 episodes and will conclude with the Straw Hats reaching Grand Line.

Live-action One Piece release date
The series was first announced on July 21, 2017, by Weekly Shonen Jump editor Hiroyuki Nakano to commemorate the manga’s 20th anniversary. The series will be produced by Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements through their production company Tomorrow studio, the company that produced the television series inspired by the movie Snowpiercer, in collaboration with Bong Joon-Ho.
On July 19, 2019, it was announced on the Clover Blossoms Twitter account that Matt Owens will serve as the series’ head writer, along with thirteen other writers. Several have worked on MCU series like Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Defenders, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
On January 30, 2020, it was announced that the series will be directed by Steven Maeda and produced by Netflix. The first season will consist of ten episodes and the plot will take place during the East-Blue Saga. Steven Maeda worked on X-Files and Lost. On May 19, 2020, during an interview, Marty Adelstein confirms the good progress of the production of the series. Scriptwriting for all ten episodes of the first season has been completed and the search for actors would begin in June 2020.
The series which was originally scheduled to begin filming in August in Cape Town, South Africa, will begin in September 2020. Each episode will cost between 6 and 15 million dollars. The casting of the series which was initially to take place in March was postponed to June 2020 due to the global health crisis linked to COVID-19. Marty Adelstein said that previous anime adaptations have been heavily criticized and to meet fan expectations, they would focus on a diverse cast. On March 22, part of the cast list is unveiled on the IMDB site.
During the show’s production in November 2021, Eiichiro Oda, who seems to be very involved in the production of the show, issued a written statement stating his excitement about the show:
We’ve been working with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios on the massive project that is the Hollywood live action series adaptation of One Piece! How many years has it been since it was announced, right? I know, I know! But rest assured we’ve been making steady progress all along! It’s not easy when you’re working with people from different cultures! But it’s preciously that process that can yield something special! For now, we’re able to announce the main cast! Rather, we need to hurry and announce it or else it’ll be leaked, apparently! Hilarious, lol. Their face, the size of their mouths and hands, their aura, the way they carry themselves, their voice, their acting skills, their height, the balance amongst the Straw Hat Crew, etc…!
We decided on this cast after numerous discussion involving people around the world! These are the people who will be our Straw Hat Pirates! It’ll take a bit more to get the show done, but we’ll continue to do our best to deliver a show that we’re confident will be enjoyed by everyone around the world! Taking all of this into account, the live-action adaptation of One Piece is unlikely to premiere before 2023. A trailer is probably going to announce the release date sometime during this year, while the actual show is probably going to arrive next year.
Live-action One Piece trailer
You now know all the facts and our thoughts related to the live-action adaptation of One Piece, which means that you’ve probably deduced for yourselves that there is no trailer for the live-action adaptation of One Piece at this time. This is because it’s still too early for a proper trailer; the series is in the early stages of production and knowing Netflix, we’ll have to wait a bit to see the trailer.
Netflix doesn’t release its trailers early, that much is known. Now, we don’t really know when One Piece is going to air, so it might be some months before we see the first teaser and around a year before a proper trailer debuts. Taking into account everything we’ve said, a trailer for the live-action adaptation of One Piece is unlikely to appear before the end of 2022 or early 2023, depending on when the series will actually air.
Live-action One Piece plot
The story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gains the powers of the rubber devil fruit and is inspired by the red-haired pirate, Shanks, to sail the seas. After the shocking statement of Gold Roger, the previous king of the pirates who put at his disposal the ‘One Piece’, the treasure that would crown the next monarch, hundreds of pirates decided to start their great adventure. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates will try to make history as new candidates.
Now, if you know what One Piece is, you’ll already know that it is one of the largest stories in the world of anime. One 10-episode season cannot even dream of covering more than a couple of percent of that story. We know that the live-action series is going to start from the beginning and that it will move along Oda’s narrative slowly, so we’ll just have to wait and see how far it goes. We currently know the episode titles of the ten episodes, so we’ll list them here for you so that you might get a better idea of what to await:

Live-action One Piece cast
Now, Netflix has been kind to us and has revealed a lot of casting information since the show’s announcement. While there are probably going to be some surprise appearances as well, we now know the main cast and a lot of the supporting cast members. Netflix might reveal some additional names before the series actually premieres, which is when we are going to update the list. As for now, here is a list of known cast members, both main and recurring:
- Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who can stretch like rubber, and who dreams of becoming the Pirate King.
- Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, a swordsman who fights using three swords, and has the purpose of becoming the best swordsman in the world.
- Emily Rudd as Nami, a girl who is an expert in theft and navigation.
- Jacob Gibson as Usopp, a cowardly boy with a fondness for lies, but a great aim.
- Taz Skylar as Sanji, a womanizing cook who dreams of finding the legendary All Blue Sea.
- Peter Gadiot as Shanks, a pirate who inspired Luffy when he was a child, and to whom he gave his straw hat.
- Morgan Davies as Koby, a boy who was kidnapped by Alvida and befriends Luffy.
- Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, a female pirate captain whom Luffy faces on his journey.
- Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, the son of a Marine captain who uses his father’s influence to do whatever he wants.
- Jeff Ward as Buggy, captain of a circus-themed pirate crew, in his case having the appearance of a clown.
- McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, a fish-man, captain of a pirate crew that has the town of Nami under his rule.
- Vincent Regan as Garp, a peculiar Vice-Admiral of the Marines.
Where to watch the live-action adaptation of One Piece?
At this moment, as expected, there is no means of watching the live-action adaptation of One Piece, as there is no live-action adaptation of One Piece to watch. The first season has not yet been streamed, but it will be globally streamed by Netflix, so unless something drastic changes along the way, Netflix is also going to stream all possible future seasons as well, since the live-action version of One Piece is produced by Netflix.
Will there be a live-action One Piece?
The future of One Piece is, as of this moment, unknown. At this moment, we don’t really know anything about a second season, so whether we’ll actually see it or not is, at this moment, still unknown. We know that One Piece is a major franchise and that people love watching Luffy’s adventures; still, the first season has not been released yet and while there might be some hope for a positive future, we are still going to have to wait and see how the situation with season one evolves to know more about a potential season two, especially in light of the fact that Netflix cancelled Cowboy Bebop after just one season, despite the original anime being a household name.
