There’re a number of returning Netflix series in December, with some wrapping up their stories for good, as well as a stocking full of Netflix original films that also have theatrical releases to boost their awards opportunities alongside their streaming debuts.
Rather than concentrate on a barrage of light and frothy romcoms for Christmas, Netflix is bringing out a number of powerful dramas - although Single All the Way should satisfy those hankering after some seasonal saccharine.
Getting their teeth into hard hitting roles are Benedict Cumberbatch as a cruel, tormenting ranch owner in Western, The Power of the Dog as well as Sandra Bullock who returns to Netflix after Birdbox with The Unforgivable, a story about a woman released from jail after a violent crime who is attempting to get her life back on track. Meanwhile Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut sees Olivia Colman going through her own existential crisis in The Lost Daughter.
While it’s safe to say these Netflix Originals will be laugh free zones, the streamer’s final big-budget, all-star offering for 2021, Don’t Look Up, might provide a few wry giggles as Adam McKay directs the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence in a tale about the end of the world with McKay continuing his run of mixing humour, satire and politics after Vice and The Big Short. And even though the impending apocalypse doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs, always remember McKay brought us Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
Recent Netflix international hit Money Heist (La casa del papel in its native Spain) drops with the second half of the fifth season bringing the heist saga to a close while the third season of Lost in Space will also be its finale, so no more “Danger! Will Robinson.”
Meanwhile, The Witcher and Emily in Paris return for their sophomore seasons with Henry Cavill donning the white wig once again as Geralt and Lily Collins slipping on more fabulous fashions for her jaunt around the French capital. And Cobra Kai is back for a fourth outing of martial arts based mid life crises.
So, here’s the rundown of what we know so far is coming to Netflix UK in December, bearing in mind that although we’ve tried to be as UK specific as possible, streaming dates can change, content can sometimes be territory specific and shows can even get changed by Netflix itself.

1st December

In 1925 Montana, charismatic but domineering rancher Phil Burbank seemingly delights in waging a cruel war of intimidation and spite on his brother’s new wife, Rose, and her teen son. His furious and cunning taunting of Rose takes an unsettling form as Phil appears empowered by the control, but eventually long-hidden secrets come to light and when Phil appears to take the boy under his wing, no-one is sure if he is beginning to soften or merely lining up the next steps of his menacing behaviour.
The Power of the Dog, directed by Jane Campion and based on the novel by Thomas Savage, features real life partners Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst and will get a limited theatrical release from 17th November, ensuring it is in contention come awards season.
2nd December

Desperate to avoid his family's judgment about his perpetual single status, Peter convinces his best friend Nick to join him for Christmas with his family and pretend that they're now in a relationship. But when Peter's mother sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James, the plan goes awry and Peter and Nick are left examining their true feelings for each other.

On the eve of Y2k, orphaned, awkward 12-year-old Beverly Moody discovers a broken mixtape crafted by her late teen parents. Raised by her grandmother Gail, a former teen mom herself who finds it painful to speak about her deceased daughter, Beverly sees this mixtape as a chance to finally learn more about the parents she never knew. So she sets out on a journey to find all the songs on the tape, along the way making friends with her quirky neighbour Ellen, intimidating tough girl Nicky, and Anti, an anti-everything record store owner who’s the key to finding these tracks.

But in hot pursuit and determined to stop the critters at all costs is zookeeper Chaz.

Released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime, Ruth Slater re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past. Facing severe judgment from the place she once called home and the suspicion of those around her, Ruth struggles to move on with her life and her only hope for redemption is finding the estranged younger sister she raised and was forced to abandon when she was incarcerated.
Based on a 2009 British miniseries called Unforgiven, the project went through a number of iterations including a version that was to be tailored for Angelina Jolie with Chris McQuarrie on board as writer.
The movie is being granted a theatrical release from November 24th prior to its streaming release.
15th December

From Academy Award-winning writer and director Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo, The Great Beauty, The Young Pope), The Hand of God is Italy’s official submission for International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

Leda is a middle-aged divorcée devoted to her work as an English teacher and to her two children. When her daughters leave home to be with their father in Canada, Leda is surprised that the loneliness she feared actually manifests as a sense of liberation. Taking a holiday by the sea, in a small coastal town in southern Italy, Leda’s first few days of calm become increasingly fraught as she slips into an obsessive fascination with a young mother and her children staying at a nearby villa.
When a small, seemingly meaningless event occurs, Leda is overwhelmed by memories of the difficult, unconventional choices she made as a mother and their consequences for herself and her family as she finally has to face her unsettling past.
Marking the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Lost Daughter is based on the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante and received a four minute standing ovation from Venice Film Festival attendees in the Sala Grande at its world premiere in September 2021.

Money Heist (2021, S5b, Netflix Original Drama Series, International: Spain, Language: Spanish)
The final five episodes of one of Netflix’s biggest series brings Money Heist to its conclusion with the long road the gang has travelled coming to its final destination as the embattled Professor races to get the gold - and more importantly, his team - out of the bank.
There will be more though as the series is currently being re-made as a Korean adaptation.
8th December
Titans (2021, S3, Netflix Original Fantasy Series)
This gritty take on the Teen Titans franchise follows the young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. Season three sees the Titans, led by Dick Grayson, return to Gotham City after the death of a colleague where they set about protecting the city in the absence of Bruce Wayne. However, the team is targeted by the ruthless Red Hood and are forced to turn to an old enemy for guidance.
Titans is executively produced under the watchful eye of the prolific Greg Berlanti who is also the creative force behind many film and TV projects including Free Guy, The Flash, Green Lantern, Love Simon, Arrow, Doom Patrol, Stargirl and The Flight Attendant.

The Witcher (2021, S2, Netflix Original Fantasy Series,all eight episodes available)
Henry Cavill returns for his coins as Geralt of Rivia, the solitary monster hunter, who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than monsters and beasts.
Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.

Emily in Paris (2021, S2, Netflix Original Series)
Season 2 of Netflix’s surprise wish-fulfilment hit Emily in Paris sees Emily getting better at navigating the city of Paris as she gets to grips with the French approach to life. However, there are still some idiosyncrasies that are beyond her and the awkward love triangle involving her neighbour and her first real friend on French soil isn’t helping either, so she decides to throw herself into her work. Then, there’s the fellow expat in French class, who both infuriates and intrigues her.
Lily Collins return in the central role and also as series producer with Sex and the City creator Darren Star showrunnng and writing.
31st December (Friday)
Cobra Kai (2021, S4, Netflix Original Series)
As middle-aged Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence find their rivalry continues 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, they have to form an unlikely partnership which sees the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang dojos joining forces to take down Cobra Kai at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament... and whoever loses must hang up their gi. Can Daniel and Johnny bury their decades-long hatchet long enough to defeat the wily Kreese and his allies? Or will Cobra Kai become the face of karate in the valley?
Fear not, martial art fans, season five of the resurgent Karate Kid spin off recently completed production meaning there will likely be a few more “kiais’’ coming in 2022.
Stay Close (2021, Netflix Original Limited Series, all eight episodes available)

A United Kingdom production of Harlan Coben’s novel of the same name made as part of Coben’s deal with Netflix which will see 14 of his novels serialised. Starring Cush Jumbo, James Nesbitt, Richard Armitage, and Sarah Parish, Stay Close questions how much you really know someone and follows on from recent adaptations of The Stranger, The Woods and The Innocent.

Upon questioning the former hostages, they find that each one gives a different, often contradictory story, making the whole scenario one huge puzzle that needs unravelling as it becomes clear the hostage are keeping something to themselves.
