Throw off those chains of reason… Throw off those chains of reason…

I’m both thrilled and a little ashamed that I’m discovering Cygnus x-1 Book I and II really for the first time this late in the game. As a kid I was obsessed with 2112, and as my fandom of the band grew I listened to the singles, bought the new albums (signals came out when I was in high school) and the “older” albums didn’t really hit my radar. When I bought Hemispheres on cassette at a discount record store, I only played the one side for whatever reason. I feel like I’m rediscovering a 2112 l-esque epic story and now I’m back to being a kid, listening to the songs on headphones as I read the lyrics and imagine the story unfold in my mind. Geddy’s voice even reminds me of some of the notes he hit on 2112, and while I wish I had spent more time enjoying this as a kid, I’m glad I decided to give their entire catalog a listen, inspired by Geddys book. If you are like me and haven’t really given it much notice, crank it up. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head for days and I’m ok with it

The Unofficial Rush R50 Reddit Daily Song Poll #114: Leave That Thing Alone The Unofficial Rush R50 Reddit Daily Song Poll #114: Leave That Thing Alone

Leave That Thing Alone (Instrumental) is the ninth tune on the fifteenth studio album Counterparts (1993). What do you think of today's track? You can vote skippable (You can almost see the circuits blowing) to outstanding (The treasure of a life).

Writing credits: Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson

Contemporaneous band member quote: "It's easy to rock out, and that's the way you would normally approach an instrumental. And that certainly was the way we approached instrumentals in the past, like 'La Villa Strangiato' or 'YYZ.' But this song is just a nice song. It's enjoyable to listen to and it goes through some changes and there's a little bit of variety. But maybe it's like you said, a quality of the guitar that sounds like a voice singing, that makes it sound more emotional." -Alex to Jon Chappell of Guitar for the Practicing Musician Magazine (February 1994)

The Unofficial Rush R50 Reddit Daily Song Poll #113: Double Agent The Unofficial Rush R50 Reddit Daily Song Poll #113: Double Agent

Double Agent is the eighth song on the fifteenth studio album Counterparts (1993). How do you rank this one? The choices range from skippable (You can almost see the circuits blowing) to superb (The treasure of a life).

Writing credits: Music: Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Lyrics: Neil Peart

Concurrent band member quote: "We were losing our minds, is what we were doing! 'Double Agent' was a complete exercise in self-indulgence, and really, it was one of the last things we wrote on the record, and...this is a song we just wanted to kind of get our yah-yahs out and just have a bit of a rave. And really, it's one of the goofiest songs I think we've ever written, but I'm quite happy with the result. In its own way, I think it's an interesting little piece of listening." -Geddy to Steve Warden on The World Album Premiere of Counterparts broadcast (October 1993)

This track was released as a retail single in 1993. The lyric 'wilderness of mirrors' was inspired by T. S. Elliot's poem 'Gerontion' (1920).

If you could wave your magic wand and rearrange the song order of any Rush album of choice, what would the new order be? If you could wave your magic wand and rearrange the song order of any Rush album of choice, what would the new order be?
Discussion

Pretty self explanatory. Pick any album(s) and rearrange the order to how you see fit. Don’t have to rearrange every song, you can simply just swap a couple around. Can’t remove any, gotta work with what you’ve got. Have at it!

Going to San Fran Going to San Fran

Hey everyone, might be a different kind of post but I’m going to San Francisco in the beginning of may, first time in the states, I’m from Europe.

I see a lot of cool things online that people find and I wanted to take this opportunity to potentially grab some cool Rush merch, vinyls, etc.

If anyone on this group is from San Fran that could recommend me some places to go, stores that sell used stuff, music stores, etc where it’ll be more likely that I find something, I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks!

Didn't Rush seem like a non-partying band in the '80s? Didn't Rush seem like a non-partying band in the '80s?
Question

When I was a kid listening to permanent waves or moving pictures , I always thought that they were such amazing musicians that they didn't even drink or smoke weed at all. Did anyone else ever think that or am I the only one on earth?

I never pictured them as party animals like Van Halen or the Stones or Led Zeppelin. They seemed like smart, brainy musicians.

Now that I'm reading Geddys book, he talks a lot about drinking and smoking.

The Unofficial Rush R50 Reddit Daily Song Poll #112: The Speed of Love The Unofficial Rush R50 Reddit Daily Song Poll #112: The Speed of Love

The Speed of Love is the seventh tune, and the second poll today, on the fifteenth studio album Counterparts (1993). How do you rank this song? The choices range from skippable (You can almost see the circuits blowing) to amazing (The treasure of a life).

Writing credits: Music: Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Lyrics: Neil Peart

Contemporaneous band member quote: "That's all volume pedal with lots of reverb and delay. For some of it I would play the chords and just kind of sweep in with the volume pedal, move the chords around a little bit. Then I think with the overdub I would just do single notes here and there. So we made a nice movement between the two with the repeated notes extended, overlapping. And I also had the DigiTech IPS-33 pitch shifter." -Alex to Jon Chappell of Guitar for the Practicing Musician Magazine (February 1994)

Alien Shore is the sixth song, and the first of two polls today, on the fifteenth studio album Counterparts (1993). What do you think of today's track? You can vote skippable (You can almost see the circuits blowing) to incredible (The treasure of a life).

Writing credits: Music: Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Lyrics: Neil Peart

Concurrent band member quote: "I was thinking about these discussions among friends that I've had where, when we talk about gender differences or about racial differences, we can talk about them dispassionately because we were normal, right-thinking, generous, well-travelled people who counted all these different people among our friends and equals. I realize that these subjects are too dangerous in many cases to discuss because they are so freighted with prejudice and misunderstanding." -Neil to Peter Hamilton of Canadian Musician Magazine (February 1994)
