Brief Life History of Margery

When Margery Despenser was born in 1397, in Nettlestead, Suffolk, England, her father, Sir Philip le Despenser Knight, was 32 and her mother, Elizabeth de Tybotot, was 26. She married Sir John de Ros 7th Baron Ros after 13 September 1404. She died on 20 April 1478, in her hometown, at the age of 81.

Wars of the Roses was a series of English civil wars for control of the throne of England between the royal families House of Lancaster and the House of York. The name of the war was derived as the red rose was the symbol of the Lancastrians and the white rose was the symbol of the Yorks.

Name Meaning

The usual medieval vernacular form of Margaret (now also commonly spelled Marjorie ). This form of the name is preserved in the nursery rhyme ‘See-saw, Margery Daw’.
