Senator Robert F Kennedy was fatally shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on 5 June 1968. The Guardian's US correspondent at the time, Alistair Cooke, wrote then of hearing 'a crackle of sharp sounds … An exploded flash bulb maybe, more like a man banging a tray several times against a wall'.
