Comment[edit]

This school does NOT serve "the archdiocese of New York," as Whispertome" added without explanation.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York stretches through 10 counties of New York State, only four of which include Regis students. On the other hand, it does not include Northern New Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Connecticut, all of which DO have Regis students. There are no geographic restrictions on Regis students.

Regis High School is administered by the Province of New York of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), an independent order of priests not answerable to the archbishop of New York.

In short, the Archdiocese of New York and Regis High School have nothing whatever to do with each other. I am completely confused as to why Whispertome removed perfectly accurate information, and replaced it with an irrelevant inaccuracy.Amherst5282 23:11, 28 January 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Anonymity of Foundress[edit]

The administration has recently made public the identity of the foundress that has been kept secret for years: the widow of former NYC Mayor Hugh J. Grant. As this information is now public, and the school is attempting to acquire portions of the family's estate, please refrain from removing this information from the article. -sup3rmark. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.232.2.98 (talk) 04:23, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The identity of the initial benefactor (foundress and benefactress are such 19th-century words! as old hat as poetess) needs to be stated properly. A recent insertion that referenced a film shown in Boston seemed poorly done. (I am not the person who deleted that text.) Whoever decides to add this information can find some material in the Wikipedia article I've been expanding for her husband Hugh J. Grant, NYC mayor and Tammany hack, and the notes to that article. It's neat stuff. Julia's father was the boss of Troy, NY, who had close ties to Hugh Grant's Tammany boss. 18:06, 23 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmclaughlin9 (talkcontribs)

Regis Philbin[edit]

Regis Philbin did NOT attend Regis HS...look at his bios...he attended Cardinal Hayes HS!!!!! His FATHER attended Regis, and so named him....please STOP including him in the graduates' list!!!!

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Amherst5282 (talkcontribs) 22:20, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Regis Philbin was named after Regis High School, due to the fact that his father went there.

Regis Philbin's father did not attend Regis High School. Though he may make claims to the different, there is no record of his father attending the school. –Ua747sp 05:15, 6 Jan 2006 (UTC)

List of Colleges that Graduates went to[edit]

I'm not entirely sure if that should in the article. I'm curious what others opinions on the matter are. Yanksox 02:05, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good point. It doesn't seem very relevant to the school in and of itself. You can make up a high-class list of colleges for nearly any school. --Larry V (talk | contribs) 02:16, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, it's really ambigious and can't be proved. I know a kid from my school that went to Yale, but that doesn't merit putting it up on that article and it means a whole bunch of other school articles will have to mention their Yale/Harvard/Brown/BC/(insert any college here) bound grads. Yanksox 02:21, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On this topic, the History section might note that until the graduating class of 1963 -- I believe I have that right -- Regis would not provide letters of reference for graduating seniors to non-Catholic colleges and universities, with the exception of the military service academies and engineering programs like Stevens and RPI. 18:09, 23 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmclaughlin9 (talkcontribs)

accuracy[edit]

Please, should the Regis High School page not include information that alumni have asked, most respectfully, for serious consideration of the concern that RHS does not admit young women -- nor (and more seriously) does it permit a discussion of this issue. I beg that you understand that this is not a political agenda, but (as the School's development office will attest) a significant conversation among us alumni, and perhaps indeed a matter for full disclosure to the public.

Grammar. Learn it.

I think that you're asking for some kind of discussion of why girls aren't admitted to Regis? Simple: the benefactress clearly stated that the school would be open only to young men. -sup3rmark —Preceding undated comment was added at 04:06, 29 January 2009 (UTC). archdiocese of new york[edit]

Please, if Regis High School's rulers, the Jesuits, do *not* have anything to do with the Archdiocese of New York (which means of course Cardinal Egan), then the Society of Jesus is again in violation of Canon Law and arguably of civil law.

If Regis High School is a Catholic school, and if it is in the Archdiocese of New York, then it is subject to the Archbishop's oversight. While some scholars (q.v. Burtchaell's DYING OF THE LIGHT) claim that the Jesuits maintain every vow except Obedience, Canon Law supercedes the wishes of people who would proclaim otherwise.

(My own perspective is that Regis' disdain for young women certainly qualifies it as Catholic!!)

Your friend, and alumnus of this high school,

Bikramen 00:29, 6 April 2007 (UTC)BikramReply[reply]

Regis harbors no ill will or disdain toward young women: it was founded by an anonymous FEMALE benefactor. It was her stipulation that the school was to be single-sex education for boys. The school is simply continuing according to that initial form. And the Catholic church is far from disdainful of women. I have not the time, nor is this the place to qualify such an argument.

REACH/ Extracurriculars[edit]

Cleaned up the grafs on admissons, REACH and extracurriculars and deleted Conor Henderson from the notable alumni. All legitimate changes,I believe.

Fair use rationale for Image:RegisHSemblem.GIF[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Image:RegisHSemblem.GIF is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 06:02, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Regis and Loyola?[edit]

Regis and Loyola are less than a block apart and are only separated by the Loyola Church. Both are Jesuit. Yet neither article acknowledges the other. There has to be some connection. Americasroof (talk) 20:31, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The only connection is that the benefactress was a parishioner of Loyola Church, as disclosed in a recent video put forth by the Regis Advancement Office. sup3rmark —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.232.2.98 (talk) 03:47, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Vandalism from Boston College[edit]

An anonymous user deleted this from the alumni listing without explanation:

The bigot-coward's IP can be traced to Boston College. John Ward, I should note, will be speaking to Regis alumni at the school in November 2012. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 22:31, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Notable alumni[edit]

Wikipedia has a notablity standard. It's used to determine if a person or topic gets an entry on Wikipedia. We read at WP:N:

"On Wikipedia, notability is a test used by editors to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article." (emphasis added)

It continues:

"These notability guidelines only outline how suitable a topic is for its own article or list. They do not limit the content of an article or list." (emphasis added)

Therefore, one need no be so notable as to merit an entry on Wikipedia to merit inclusion within an article in a list like we have of notable Regis alumni. Some people are "noteworthy", i.e., worth noting here in the context of this Wikipedia entry, rather than notable in the sense used for determining whether someone merits a Wikipedia entry of his own.

Inclusion here is a question of judgment. Citations are definitely required to establish that the person should be listed here, so we can know that the person in question is real and is properly identified by profession or achievement. But we should be able to discuss entries. Using a Wikipedia standard that does not apply here doesn't help us build Wikipedia's content. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 22:08, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for your work on this subject! I'm sorry I don't have time for a more complete response, but please take some time to read WP:ALMAMATER. It addresses this situation authoritatively and should completely remove the need for personal judgment. Thanks for all your help! Jacona (talk) 15:25, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm afraid your reference does not remove the need for personal judgment at all. What you cite does not address this situation authoritatively. Here's its heading with emphasis added:

This essay contains comments and advice of one or more Wikipedia contributors on the topic of notability. Essays may represent widespread norms or minority viewpoints. Consider these views with discretion. Essays are not Wikipedia policies or guidelines.

Discretion. Not a policy or guideline. Not authoritative.
Even that essay on Alumni Notability suggests ways to identify padding and nonsense, all of which seem quite reasonable. It also says: "Occasionally, someone notable won't have their own Wikipedia article yet, but will be listed in their university article, but that's the exception to the rule." So the essay you cite allows for exceptions! How do we recognize such an "exception"? We can note that the person listed doesn't meet any of the warning signs identified at WP:ALMAMATER, like padded commentary and bloviating adjectives. And we see citations. Or at least a request for a citation that should be allowed to sit for a while to see if anyone can provide one. In some cases we see the name in question appears in another WP article even if he doesn't have an entry of its own yet.
Let's use our judgment. The list of alumni as it stands is quite clean and has only a few exceptions that are not linked to their own WP entries, nothing to set off alarms of the sort the author(s) of WP:ALMAMATER are concerned about, no self-promotion. At least none I can see. That would be another issue entirely. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 16:36, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well have your fun while it lasts! Just be sure that you provide a reliable source WP:RS to establish notability as well as connection to Regis. Many of these entries have no sources provided to prove WP:PROVEIT either their notability nor connection, and should therefore not be here at all.
I guess it's hard to admit you were dead wrong. I do think that every name on a list should have a citation linking the person to the institution in question and not just rely on an xref'd WP entry. That will come with time. Building takes much more effort than tearing down. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 22:05, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is true that one can quickly build articles when not constrained by annoyances like verifiability and reliable sources! That is wonderful when one is writing fiction; terrible when one is writing an encyclopedia. Let's stand by the time-tested pillars of Wikipedia, rather than ditching them all because it is expedient today. Thanks for your help in making Wikipedia better! Jacona (talk) 22:24, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And with your improvements, this article is much better! Thanks again! Jacona (talk) 22:27, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Regis Study Skills Guide[edit]

This entry could use a sentence or two about the The Regis Study Skills Guide, which has now gone through several editions. We should be able to come up with a better source to describe it than this [promotional material]. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 20:54, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That may be worthy of an article on its own and then a link back. John from Idegon (talk) 23:05, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Regis Historical Society[edit]

There is talk of redirecting User:Aponiatowski11/Regis Historical Society to this article. Does anyone think the content should be merged into the article, at Regis High School (New York City)#Extracurricular activities? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 07:12, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No. It might merit a one-line mention. Wikipedia is not Facebook. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 12:30, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Page absolutely ravaged in recent weeks[edit]

How did Wikipedia allow this page to become an absolute shell of its former self thru multiple cuts of content? I am greatly confused how the page offers significantly less information than was present in its previous versions. This seems to be due to "John from Idegon" and others deleting paragraphs upon paragraphs of useful, well-written content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.141.161.97 (talk) 07:27, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When you are on your talk page, there should be an option for "User Contributions" (left side of the screen on my interface). This can be used for any editor to have a look at their history. A link to "contribs" also appears in a number of places, such as article history, signatures, etc. signed, Willondon (talk) 20:25, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
