QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Family and friends must contend with unexpected developments and revelations at a man's funeral.
PLOT:
Aaron (CHRIS ROCK) is a frustrated man. Not only do he and his wife, Michelle (REGINA HALL), live with his parents and must put up with his mom, Cynthia (LORETTA DIVINE), always nagging them about not having any children yet, but as an aspiring author he also lives in the figurative shadow of his younger and highly successful novelist brother, Ryan (MARTIN LAWRENCE).

The two aren't close siblings and their differences come to head when Ryan returns home for their father's funeral that's to take place inside the family home and be presided over by Reverend Davis (KEITH DAVID). Following a mix-up with the body, things only go downhill from there as family and friends gather for the ceremony.

Among them are the brothers' cousins, Jeff (COLUMBUS SHORT) & Elaine (ZOE SALDANA), and her boyfriend, Oscar (JAMES MARSDEN), who her father, Duncan (RON GLASS), doesn't like as he prefers her former boyfriend, Derek (LUKE WILSON). The latter, who still wants to get back with Elaine, has arrived with his friend Norman (TRACY MORGAN) who isn't pleased that they have to drive cantankerous Uncle Russell (DANNY GLOVER) to the funeral. Comely 18-year-old family friend Martina (REGINE NEHY) is also there and has drawn the lascivious attention of Ryan, but Aaron is more concerned with the arrival of Frank (PETER DINKLAGE).

He initially thinks the man is just a friend of his father's, but things become more complicated following Frank's revelation about the deceased man and related threat of blackmail. With Oscar ending up unintentionally high on acid when Elaine gives him what she mistakenly believes is Valium, things quickly spiral out of control for everyone, but especially Aaron who simply wants to deliver a respectful eulogy for his father.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of anyone in the cast and/or zany/madcap comedies, they might be interested.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For language, drug content and some sexual humor.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • CHRIS ROCK plays a frustrated and aspiring author who still lives at home with his parents as well as his wife. He must contend with her and his mom pressuring him to have a child and living in the professional shadow of brother, as well as various unexpected developments that occur at his father's funeral. He uses strong profanity.
  • MARTIN LAWRENCE plays his brother, a successful but self-centered novelist who isn't seen much by the family, but arrives for the funeral (and doesn't want to pay for his share of the expenses). Instead, he's interested in the much younger Martina, but is distracted by all of the madcap developments that occur during the funeral. He uses strong profanity.
  • REGINA HALL plays Aaron's wife who's pressuring him to have sex so that she might get pregnant and thus put an end to her mother-in-law badgering them about not being a grandmother.
  • PETER DINKLAGE plays a man who shows up at the funeral and -- SPOILER ALERT -- turns out to have been the deceased's gay lover. Upset that he received nothing in the will, he threatens to blackmail the family about said relationship if Aaron and Ryan don't pay up.
  • ZOE SALDANA plays the brothers' cousin who must not only put up with her ex-boyfriend trying to get back together with her, but also her father not liking her current boyfriend, a situation exacerbated by Oscar unintentionally being high on acid for the funeral. She uses strong profanity.
  • JAMES MARSDEN plays that boyfriend who ends up that way, and then completely nude in that state, after she gives him what she believes is some Valium. He ends up acting in a goofy manner for much of the film and uses some strong profanity.
  • COLUMBUS SHORT plays Elaine's brother, a student and drug dealer of some sort whose acid is what puts Oscar on that unintentional drug trip.
  • TRACY MORGAN plays a family friend who ends up having to drive and then watch after Uncle Russell, much to his dismay. Worried about a rash on his arm, he also uses profanity.
  • LUKE WILSON plays his friend and Elaine's ex-boyfriend who wants to get back with her and won't take no for an answer. He briefly smokes and uses some strong profanity.
  • DANNY GLOVER plays the cantankerous Uncle Russell, an ornery man who abuses Norman and uses strong profanity.
  • LORETTA DIVINE plays Aaron and Ryan's mother and now widow who must deal with the death of her husband and all that occurs at the funeral, although she still has time to belittle Michelle for not yet giving her a grandchild.
  • RON GLASS plays Elaine's father who doesn't care for Oscar and instead still likes Derek for her. He uses strong profanity.
  • REGINE NEHY plays a family friend who wears an inappropriate and suggestive dress to the funeral and thus draws Ryan's attention.
  • KEITH DAVID plays the reverend who becomes increasingly frustrated and impatient by the delays and developments at the funeral. He also belittles Aaron and his aspiring writing career.

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 38 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue and related content are present (including about a past gay relationship, with related humor), as are various views of men's bare butts.

Slapstick style material is present, as is other comedy-based violence (people striking or struggling with others). Several characters end up high from unintentionally taking acid (and there are related comments about that, along with one comment about past drunkenness), while there's brief smoking. Tense family material is present, as are thematic elements.

Crude/gross-out humor is present, as are bad attitudes (played for comedy) and potentially imitative behavior. Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are varying amounts of handheld camera movement in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Jeff tells someone on the phone, "Never get high on your own supply." Elaine and Oscar then arrive, and while Jeff is getting dressed, Elaine gives Oscar what she believes is some Valium from a pill bottled labeled as that. Not long after that, Oscar starts to act oddly, the result of unknowingly ingesting acid.
  • Jeff admits to Elaine that the "Valium" she gave Oscar was really acid along the lines of Mescaline or Special K. He then refers to Oscar as being high as a kite.
  • Frank blackmails Aaron and Ryan for $30,000 over a secret he has about their father. About that, Aaron sarcastically asks if he's smoking meth.
  • Having found Jeff's bottle of "Valium," and seeing that Ryan and Aaron need help in restraining Frank, Norman gives Frank several pills, not realizing it's acid (Jeff later confirms this to them). After that, Frank is high (while bound and gagged).
  • About their first time together, Elaine tells Derek that she was so drunk he could have been a donkey for all she knew. He thanks her (presumably for what he thinks is a size-related sexual reference), but she tells him that wasn't a compliment.
  • We see Uncle Russell, high, sitting nude up on a roof.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Norman comments on Derek smoking, with the latter saying Norman used to do the same. Norman replies he also used to "piss my pants" (when he was a kid) but doesn't anymore.
  • While pushing Uncle Russell along, Norman asks him if he just farted.
  • Uncle Russell tells Ryan that he wouldn't "wipe my ass" with the latter's book.
  • Oscar states he's going to be sick, rushes into the house with his hand over his mouth, and heads into the bathroom. He opens the toilet lid and kneels down there, but we didn't hear or see him get sick if he does.
  • Uncle Russell announces he has to take a "sh*t" and "crap," and finally gets Norman (who understands that Uncle Russell has to "doodle") to get him into the bathroom. Norman helps him from his wheelchair onto the toilet, but his hand ends up stuck beneath Uncle Russell who says there's a "torpedo" coming down, then proceeds to have diarrhea. Norman yanks his hand out in horror, showing the fecal matter on that, followed by that ending up on his face (he doesn't realize that at first), shirt and the bathroom mirror (while Uncle Russell remains on the toilet, with more sounds of diarrhea). Norman then complains about getting that in his mouth, while others later react to that smell on him (and he later worries about the "sh*t smell").
  • While bound, gagged and unintentionally high, Frank ends up falling and banging his head on a glass coffee table. We don't see the impact, but do see some blood, with others thinking he's dead.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Seeing an Asian man in the casket rather than his African-American father, Aaron sarcastically comments on the dead man being Jackie Chan.
  • Michelle must contend with Cynthia constantly belittling her for not yet having a grandchild, including her saying that you can't understand death if you haven't given life.
  • Uncle Russell constantly abuses Norman, both verbally (constantly putting him down, including snide remarks about his weight) and physically (hitting him with his cane).
  • Despite being in his grieving mother's presence, Ryan jokes about it not mattering if you sit in first class on a plane (after bragging of paying for two such seats himself) if it crashes as everyone will be dead.
  • Reverend Davis belittles Aaron's writing abilities, as does Frank later.
  • Ryan refuses to pay his half of his father's funeral, or the same amount for a later blackmail attempt, despite him making more money than his brother who has to foot the bill for both. Accordingly, the brothers have bad attitudes toward each other at various moments.
  • Martina wears an inappropriate and ultra-tight dress to the funeral.
  • While high, Oscar does a Nazi salute when Aaron mentions Hitler in the same year as his father's birth.
  • Frank blackmails Aaron and Ryan for $30,000 over a secret he has about their father.
  • About having seen the body of Aaron's father roll out of the coffin, Norman tells Aaron that the rigor mortis set in well.
  • Uncle Russell tells Derek that women want to be manhandled and refers to them as "sweet bitches." He also states that they're smarter than men think, but not as smart as they (the women) think.
  • Thinking Frank is dead, the guys decide they can simply put his body in the casket and thus get away without telling anyone.
  • Derek forces a kiss on Elaine who slaps him back in return.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Those who have a fear of dead bodies should note there are several views of one in (and briefly out of) a coffin (fully dressed).
  • Oscar ends up slipping on the roof and then dangles from the edge, with Elaine trying to hold him, but her grip is slipping (Jeff ends up rescuing him from down below -- this is mostly played for comedy).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • We see Jeff playing a first person shooter video game.
  • Frank fakes having a gun in his jacket.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Due to crowd noise at our screening, not all dialogue could be heard, so the following should be considered a minimum: Phrases: "F*ck you," "Where the f*ck you been, you fat bastard?" "Who the f*ck /was that/does he think he is?" "What the f*ck's this guy doing?" "What the f*ck /was that?" "Go see what the f*ck is going on," "You f*cking moron," "M*therf*cker," "F*ck 'em," "F*ck no," "I don't give a f*ck," "You f*cking idiot," "Open the f*cking door," He's four-f*cking-feet tall," "I say we bury the m*therf*cker," "Oh sh*t," "Sh*t ain't normal," "Ah, sh*t," "I'm too old for this sh*t," Bullsh*t," "I gotta take a sh*t," "You pompous piece of sh*t," "Talking sh*t," "This sh*t's been crazy," "Dumb sh*t," "Her ass is in grad school," "Like some cheap piece of ass," "Rhonda's Tiny Box," "You think?" "Never get high on your own supply," "Take your broke, no-nuts ass to the back," "Dumb ass," "Fatty," "He's high as a kite," "Let's freak him out," "Old ass," "I'm gonna kick your ass," "Shut up," "You arrogant bastard," "I wouldn't wipe my ass with it," "You fool," "Oh hell no," "Our father was on the down-low?" "Fat head," "Up to my ass," "It's hammer time," "Shut the damn door," "Now that you jumped his ass," "That poor bastard," "Sweet bitches," "It sucks," "Bromantically involved," "What the hell is wrong with you?" "Big ass" and "You imbecile."
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Some kids may be enticed to replace one prescription drug with another to get an unknowing person high (as occurs in the film with Valium that's really acid).
  • A miscellaneous woman gives Norman "the finger."
  • While high, Oscar starts singing "Amazing Grace" in an exaggerated fashion.
  • While high, Oscar holds a large magnifying glass in front of his mouth to make that look huge.
  • While high, Oscar does a Nazi salute when Aaron mentions Hitler in the same year as his father's birth.
  • Frank blackmails Aaron and Ryan for $30,000 over a secret he has about their father.
  • While high, Oscar presses his face against a window, thus distorting his features, including making his nostrils look huge.
  • While high, Oscar climbs out onto the roof and is fully nude (we see the side of his bare butt).
  • Ryan slaps Norman to make the latter regain his composure.
  • We see Uncle Russell, high, sitting nude up on a roof.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • A tiny bit of suspenseful music (lightly done) plays in one scene.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • Due to crowd noise at our screening, not all dialogue could be heard, so the following should be considered a minimum: At least 38 "f" words (3 used with "mother"), 54 "s" words, 1 slang term for sex ("do it"), 1 possible one for female genitals ("box"), 21 damns, 15 asses (1 used with "hole"), 7 hells, 2 craps, 7 uses of "G-damn," 5 of "Oh my God," 4 each of "God" and "Oh God," 3 of "Jesus Christ" and 1 use each of "Jesus" and "My God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Due to crowd noise at our screening, not all dialogue could be heard, so the following should be considered a minimum, and most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Norman is concerned about a rash on his arm, with Derek saying Norman should use a condom while having sex.
  • Michelle shows cleavage in her dress.
  • Michelle reminds Aaron that she's on the last day of her cycle and that they need to "do it" once today to try to get her pregnant.
  • About not yet having a grandchild, Cynthia complains about Aaron and Michelle trying (having sex) all hours of the night, and about that not working.
  • We see Jeff fully clothed up top but in just his boxers below the waist.
  • Martina wears an inappropriate, ultra-tight and cleavage-revealing dress to the funeral, thus catching Ryan's eye. When Aaron sarcastically remarks about her being in the 12th grade (but 18, we later learn), Ryan says that might be true, but that her "ass" (seen in close-up on camera in that tight dress) is in grad school.
  • Michelle reminds Aaron that they still need to "finish that thing" (have sex), but he says he's isn't in the mood. She then tells him she isn't wearing any panties, but that doesn't help and he tells her to put some on before she touches any of the food downstairs.
  • Elaine shows some cleavage.
  • After physically exerting himself (non-sexually), Norman complains about his scrotum being like something with two bowling balls in it.
  • When Michelle approaches him, Aaron thinks it's about her wanting to have sex (it's not) and says he's not going to have sex with her right now.
  • About his rash, Norman says he knows it's not Chlamydia.
  • SPOILER ALERT: Frank reveals that he was the deceased man's gay lover, and shows Aaron photos of him and that man dressed as sailors beside a scantily clad man (we later see another showing the two men in drag). For comic effect, the film then shows some small, classic style statues of nude Greek wrestlers, with one set showing a man behind another (in a wrestling move) and the other showing a man holding another upside down who's holding the first man's penis. About being left out of the man's will, Frank says that makes him feel like some "cheap piece of ass." After Aaron reacts to Frank blackmailing him and his family, Frank says he made certain "sacrifices" to keep the deceased man happy (while wiping his mouth, the joke being that it's a gay oral sex reference). Moments later, Aaron is upset to hear an old family friend comment on him and the father going skinny-dipping in the past. When Aaron shows Ryan the photos, Ryan says he didn't know their father was into yoga and comments on him doing the "wheelbarrow" (we don't see the photo, although everyone adversely reacts to seeing it).
  • Derek tells Norman the latter's rash is just a pigment condition like Michael Jackson had on his "balls," prompting Norman to reply he wasn't down there.
  • We hear that the title of one of Ryan's novels is "Rhonda's Tiny Box."
  • A classic style painting in the background of a shot shows various small nude figures, including a male bare butt view.
  • While high, Oscar climbs out onto the roof and is fully nude (we see the side of his bare butt).
  • About their first time together, Elaine tells Derek that she was so drunk he could have been a donkey for all she knew. He thanks her (presumably for what he thinks is a size-related sexual reference), but she tells him that wasn't a compliment.
  • While high and still nude, Oscar sits up on the roof, quickly opening and closing his knees like a kid (we don't see anything, but the implication concerns what should be visible based on such movement).
  • Ryan and Aaron tell Michelle what's going on regarding Frank and their dad, and comments are made about those two having sex.
  • Aaron mentions his dad and Frank having gay sex and them being "bromantically involved."
  • We see various views and angles of Oscar's bare butt while he's high and up on the roof. He then ends up slipping and dangling from that, with Jeff eventually grabbing him from a window below the roofline (the joke being that Jeff's face is right in Oscar's crotch and his arm is around his bare butt).
  • Derek forces a kiss on Elaine who slaps him back in return.
  • Needing to get rid of Frank's body, Ryan and Aaron put that in their father's casket, unintentionally resulting in the two clothed bodies being in the "69" position.
  • Trying to distract Reverend Davis, Norman lies about going to a strip club, with comments about the whipped cream and such.
  • Elaine announces that she's pregnant (by Oscar).
  • We see the side of Uncle Russell's bare butt as he's lifted off a toilet.
  • Aaron and Michelle kiss on a bed (clothed), with him saying he's now interested in having sex with her.
  • We see Uncle Russell, high, sitting nude up on a roof.
  • SMOKING
  • Norman comments on Derek smoking, with the latter saying Norman used to do the same.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • The various family members must contend with the death of the family patriarch, but little of that grief is played realistically.
  • Aaron and Ryan clash over various matters, from their professional rivalry in the publishing world to Ryan not wanting to pay his share of the funeral or later blackmail expenses.
  • Michelle must contend with Cynthia constantly belittling her for not yet having a grandchild, including her saying that you can't understand death if you haven't given life.
  • Elaine reveals that she's keeping her engagement to Oscar secret from her father who openly doesn't like Oscar, especially now that he's acting (from unintentionally getting high) so bizarrely. She eventually confronts her father about that, saying he has to accept her and her choices.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Dealing with a death in the family and revelations that sometimes come after that.
  • The potential repercussions of taking someone else's drugs (prescription or otherwise).
  • People leading closeted lives.
  • Why sad events, such as funerals, can sometimes inspire humor.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Cynthia knocks Michelle aside to greet Ryan upon his arrival.
  • Uncle Russell repeatedly hits Norman from the backseat with his cane while Norman is driving.
  • While high, Oscar thinks the coffin is moving and thus rushes to it. After some brief struggling, the coffin is knocked over and the dead body rolls out.
  • After hearing it was Jeff's drugs that got him high, Oscar goes after Jeff and pushes him down to an outdoor sofa.
  • After Frank fakes having a gun in his jacket, Ryan grabs and tackles him to the floor, with Aaron then helping gag and tie up Frank. When they hear Uncle Russell at the door, Norman and Jeff toss Frank over the back of the sofa, with Jeff jumping on him (we don't see the impact of that).
  • Following a disagreement, Aaron knees Ryan in the crotch. In turn, Ryan punches Aaron in his crotch, followed by the two struggling.
  • While bound, gagged and unintentionally high, Frank ends up falling and banging his head on a glass coffee table. We don't see the impact, but do see some blood, with others thinking he's dead.
  • Ryan slaps Norman to make the latter regain his composure.
  • Derek forces a kiss on Elaine who slaps him back in return.
  • Ryan and Aaron drop a person they're carrying (thinking he's dead, and so they can open a casket in which they'll hide the body).
  • Various people struggle with Frank, while Cynthia whacks him.
