About Rachel Portman
This English composer shuttered the glass ceiling by becoming the first female composer to win Academy and Emmy Awards. Her pastoral orchestral scores for literary adaptations set her apart from the rest.
Early Life
Portman was born in Surrey, England and started composing while studying at Charterhouse. To sharpen her skills, she went on to Worcester College, Oxford where she studied music and experimented on composing music for the theatre and film production on campus like “Privileged”, which starred then-student Hugh Grant.
Career
She started writing scores for the BBC and Channel 4 television shows, such as “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit” and “Storyteller”. For the latter, she received the Anthony Asquith Award for in 1987. Her ability to create her own unique and recognizable orchestral force has made her a toast in the film industry. With over a 100 distinctive scores, she has set the bar high for female composers.
Achievements
Academy Award for Best Musical or Comedy Score in 1996 for the film “Emma”.
Received Academy Award nominations for her works on scores of films: “The Cider House Rules” in 1999 and “Chocolat” in 2000. The latter film, which was directed by Swedish film director Lasse Hallström, starred Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, and Johnny Dep.
Awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010
Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Special for her work on “Bessie” in 2015.
Personal Life
She married Italian producer Uberto Pasolini in 1995 but parted ways 11 years later. The English actress found love again and tied the knot with Andrew Gilchrist in July 2021.
