Visiting Québec City in December

Visiting Quebec City in December is our favorite time. The snow is up to the windowsills and there’s a fire roaring in the fireplace, from mid to late December until around the first of March.

Quebec City in December is a captivating canvas of white. The city’s historic streets, charming architecture, and cobblestone pathways are often blanketed in a pristine layer of snow, creating a fairytale-like atmosphere.  Strolling through Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage site, feels like stepping into a Dickensian novel.

Much to Do!

For those who relish winter activities, Quebec City offers a number of options. Ice skating at Place D’Youville, (pictured below) dog sledding through the snowy forests, and tubing down exhilarating slopes at Village Vacances in Valcartier are just a few of the thrilling adventures that await you.

Quebec’s culinary scene is world-class throughout the year, and December is no exception. Savor hearty meals in cozy restaurants like Le Lapin Sauté, where french dishes and warming soups take center stage. Don’t forget to indulge in a steaming cup of café au lait (coffee with cream) or a bowl of chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) while strolling the snow-dusted streets.

If you’re looking for something hearty consider Le Petit Chateau for some original swiss fondue.

Christmas Market

Quebec City is renowned for its enchanting Christmas market that fills the city with a festive spirit. The German Christmas Market at Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville boasts charming wooden stalls selling traditional crafts and delectable treats. Meanwhile, the Quebec City Christmas Market at the Old Port immerses visitors in a magical world of lights, music, and holiday cheer.

The grand Fairmont Château Frontenac Hotel at left becomes even more majestic in December. Its turrets and spires glisten with frost, and the interior exudes warmth and elegance. The Chateau is comparatively empty in December, so it is a wonderful time for a weekend visit because you’ll have the hotel more or less to yourself.  But even if you’re not staying here, a visit to this historic gem, the most photographed hotel in the world, is a must.

While Quebec City’s winter beauty is undeniable, its rich history and culture are equally captivating. The Musée de la Civilisation offers a deep dive into the province’s past, while the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec showcases impressive, Quebec historic art collections throughout the year.

Layers are the Key

Don’t forget, as you’re packing for your trip, that visiting Quebec City in December requires proper winter attire. Layering is key, as temperatures can plummet. Be sure to pack warm coats, waterproof boots, cozy scarves, a pair of mittens, and a warm hat that covers your ears to keep the cold at bay.

In short, visiting Quebec City in December is like stepping into a real-life snow globe. The city’s winter wonderland, coupled with its festive spirit, offers an experience that’s both enchanting and unforgettable. From the charming streets of Old Quebec to the exhilarating winter activities and delectable cuisine, Quebec City in December is a destination that will warm your heart even in the coldest of days.
