Having been fully vaccinated, we just returned from our first inspection trip to Punta Cana since the pandemic began and can assure you that every resort and all public areas are being very pro-active regarding COVID from the moment you land until the moment you depart! Temperature scanners are at the airport immigration area and visitors with elevated measurements are immediately directed to the on-site testing area. Everyone is gloved and masked from baggage handlers to transfer drivers. All the resorts follow governmental health standards. Guest temperatures are re-checked as you exit your transfer vehicle, and there are hand sanitizing stations everywhere. Masks are required in all public areas unless you are actively eating/drinking or in the water or at your lounge chair or walking along the beach. Gloves are even mandated before entering any of the buffet food lines. Tables are disinfected after every guest use. Silverware and napkins even comes in sealed pre-packaged sleeves. Rooms are fully sanitized after every guest departure. All workers wear masks and gloves and those with direct guest contact have all received atleast their first dose of vaccine. Resorts are currently providing free, on-site pre-departure virus testing as well as the required certification documentation needed for anyone flying into the USA. All-in-all, we felt safer from the virus in Punta Cana than we do here in the States! If you have been fully vaccinated, do not hesitate to visit Punta Cana whether for your first time or for a return visit to this wonderful destination!

We went last July during the middle of the pandemic before the vaccines were even a thing, and it was like that then as well. Things felt more organized, cleaner, and safer in the DR than they did at home.

We certainly didn’t feel safer in the DR than the US... very misleading.

Ok.. masks under the nose.. resorts busy so started easing off precautions like opening up the buffet. Guests hardly distanced and unmasked in close proximity. Their vaccine efficacy is very low so not sure how effective it is. Testing standards below par”

I’m fully vaccinated and not a germaphobe but to say “it’s safer than the US”. Horse hockey!

When we went, the DR had just reopened 4 days prior and masks weren't required anywhere there to my knowledge. The only time we needed to wear a mask was on the plane getting there. There were some people in Santo Domingo wearing them. Around my area here in Virginia, most people don't wear a mask anyway. Masks aren't an issue for me but this isn't the place to debate that.

In the DR, it was just as the OP described though. Thermal scanning at the airport, sanitation once you enter the airport, before you get in your transfer, once you get to the resort, the rooms sanitized, thermal scanning at the resort, etc. The buffet was open at the resort but it was enclosed and the resort staff were serving us. The resort staff were wearing masks.

When we returned home, we arrived in Charlotte and Customs at CLT was ridiculous. I am not sure how many people they can fit in the room but I guarantee it was at max-capacity or more. There were eleventy bazillion people snaked around the room. So no matter where you were, there was someone in front of you, behind you, and on each side of you with no distancing. Those that had a mask on, had it around the chin as WahooVA described. There were no sanitizing stations or any sort of thermometers or anything. Charlotte was a mess in the airport coming home. It seemed MUCH cleaner and organized in the DR.

Teknoge.. exactly the way it was in Dulles when we flew in. Customs was ridiculous.. in that respect, yes, agreed, was awful.

So knowing what we know of Covid 19 and that most of the people in the buffets won’t be vaccinated , don’t social distance or wear masks(some do) is as safe as the states.

I think not.

For myself and family once a whole lot more people need to be vaccinated.

I have been watching the cruise companies say they can operate safely but how many Covid cases do you think will happen once they come online again .

Only safe way to travel and not worry is to get the majority of guests and staff vaccinated which will happen late 2021 early 2022.

I think you need to look at the resort you’re going to. I haven’t been to Punta Cana yet, but the resort I went to Mexico require masking indoors so when you got up to go to the buffet you wore a mask when you came back to your table you wore a mask. And they must’ve been ebforced it well because I saw basically no one not wearing a mask. Which is a lot more than I can say fo my hometown now thanks to our idiot governor and his idiot statements
