Providence Journal's circulation of weekdays falls to less than 30,000

The Providence Journal’s weekday print circulation has fallen more than 85% according to new data and the newspaper has announced more restrictions, de facto making more of the Journal’s content only available to subscribers.

"The Journal’s most recent circulation report shows the challenge. Weekday paid print circulation fell to 29,957 copies a day as of Sept. 30, with Sundays down to 38,500 copies; both figures were over 200,000 back in 1990,” reported WPRI on January 23, 2021.

To understand the changing media landscape, GoLocal has more than 49,000 subscribers to its daily free email.

Journal's More Restrictive Paywall

Almost simultaneous to news of the paper’s falling circulation was the announcement that the company announced its paywall will now be more restrictive.

The newspaper is one of more than 200 daily papers owned by Gannett which is headquartered in McLean, Virginia.

“At The Providence Journal, we love our subscribers. Their support allows our reporters, photographers and editors to do the important work they do each day, acting as Rhode Island citizens' trusted advocate. That's why starting today, we will mark certain stories each day as being 'for subscribers only' on our website, providencejournal.com," wrote the Journal this week.

"In order to access these select stories, a digital subscription will be required. Existing print subscribers have access to all stories when they activate the digital access that comes with their newspaper subscription."
