Prince Philip’s mother and father: Duke of Edinburgh’s parents, Greek background and family tree explained

Many will already be aware the Queen and Duke were also third cousins

The Duke of Edinburgh was the longest-serving consort in British history, having been married to the Queen for more than seven decades.

Philip married then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she took the throne after the death of her father and King George VI.

Even before he officially joined the Royal Family through marriage, he had strong ties to the British monarchy.

Many will already be aware the Queen and Duke were also third cousins through different lines of their family trees, both being great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria.

Who were Prince Philip’s parents?

Philip was born in Corfu, Greece, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

His father was the seventh child and fourth son of King George I of Greece, and grandson of Christian IX of Denmark.

Through his mother, Philip was a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria, whose daughter, Princess Alice, married Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine.

When Philip was an infant, his uncle – the King of Greece – was forced to abdicate after the Greco-Turkish War.

The family was exiled from the country due to anger toward the royal family, leading to Philip spending most of his youth in the UK.

Philip spent much of his early life with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, and his uncle, George Mountbatten.
