Prince Hans-Adam is head of the royal family that owns LGT Group, a closely held bank in Liechtenstein, where he's also chief of state. The Vaduz-based company had assets under management of 287.2 billion Swiss francs ($301 billion) in 2022, and offers wealth management services in Europe, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Prince Hans-Adam's fortune derives from LGT Group, the private bank that the royal family of Liechtenstein has owned for more than 80 years. It had assets under management of 287.2 billion Swiss francs ($301 billion) as of Dec. 31, 2022, according to its website.
The bank is valued based on its 2022 book value of 6 billion Swiss francs and the average price-to-book multiple of three publicly traded peers: EFG International AG, UBS Group AG and Julius Baer Group Ltd.
LGT Group is owned by the Prince of Liechtenstein Foundation, a for-profit entity that manages the royal family's assets. The foundation also owns other assets including arable land in Austria. Those land holdings are valued based on the average price-per-hectare of similar plots in Austria and eastern Germany, according to research from Savills and Germany's Federal Office of Statistics.
Prince Hans-Adam is the beneficiary of the foundation, according to LGT Group's annual report.
Karin Brigl, a spokesperson for LGT, said the Princely House of Liechtenstein declined to comment on the calculation.
Prince Hans-Adam II was born on February 14, 1945 to Prince Franz Josef II and his wife, Princess Gina. As the oldest of five children, Hans-Adam inherited his father's royal title as chief of state of the principality of Liechtenstein in 1989.
In assuming the role, Hans-Adam became de facto leader of one of the world's oldest noble families, dating as far back as the 12th century. Exerting their influence through significant land holdings, the family alternately controlled territory in modern-day Germany, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic before purchasing the land that now comprises Liechtenstein around 1700.
After graduating from a Swiss boarding school, Prince Hans-Adam worked as a trainee at a London bank and enrolled at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland where he studied business and economics, at the urging of his father.
After graduating in 1969, he was tasked with rebuilding the family's business empire, which had fallen into disarray due to poor management and expropriations during World War II. The heir shut down money-losing businesses and regained control of family assets in Austria. His father appointed Prince Hans-Adam his official representative in 1984, although he did not take on the official title until his father's death five years later.
As the principality's highest-ranking official, Prince Hans-Adam has veto power over legislation and can dismiss members of parliament. A referendum on curtailing the royal family's power in 2012 was rejected by 76 percent of voters.
Prince Hans-Adam, who was married to Countess Marie Kinsky from 1967 until her death in 2021, has four children. He passed on the powers of day-to-day political decision-making to his oldest son, Hereditary Prince Alois, in 2004.
