In 1775 Boulton entered into partnership with the Scottish engineer James Watt who invented the steam engine; he supplied machinery for the new Mint on Tower Hill in 1805. Boulton also designed for the commercial art market, devising ormolu (gilt brass) mounts for the English potter Josiah Wedgwood's decorative wares. Both men belonged to the Lunar Society, a group of prominent Midlands men who developed ideas and techniques in science, manufacturing and transport.

During the American War of Independence he saw successes at both the Battle of Baltimore and the Battle of Lake Borgne, but in 1815 he was defeated at the Battle of New Orleans. From 1821 to 1824 he was Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth. Illustration to Edward Pelham Brenton's "The Naval History of Great Britain" (London 1823-1825), Volume V, page 188.

John Meares (1756?-1809), naval officer and entrepreneur. Nothing is known of his life before he entered the navy in 1771. After commanding a ship to India in 1783 he formed a company for trading with north-west America, unaware of other expeditions being mounted at this time with the same aim, and the competition between Meares and his rival George Dixon became known as the Meares-Dixon controversy. Meares' attempts to establish a permanent base in Nootka Sound led to his associates being taken prisoner by Spaniards claiming that the coast was in the possession of Spain and that foreign ships trading were in violation of Spanish rights. Meares (himself based in China at this time) returned to England on receiving news of these events, and provided ministers with a 'colourful and far from accurate account' of his exploits in the Far East. This led to a forty ship fleet being assembled under Lord Howe, and the Spanish accession to British demands in 1790 in the face of this threat. All confiscated land was returned to British subjects and the north-west coast was opened to trade with all nations. The publicity Meares received enabled him to publish various books and pamphlets relating to his travels, although he faded from view after the crisis passed.

Thomas Mortimer (1730-1810) was a voluminous writer, chiefly of biographies and economic subjects. He was educated at Harrow and mastered French and Italian to improve his studies of modern history. In 1762 he was made English vice-counsul for the Austrian Netherlands, a post he retained for six years. Mortimer's largest work was The British Plutarch, also owned in a first edition by Belmont Abbey, which details in six volumes the lives of eminent Britons from the time of Henry VIII to George II. He also authoured a General Commercial Dictionary and translated Gautier's Life and Exploits of Pyrrhus from the French. This three volume History seems likely to have been his proudest project, given his known preference for the subject and the ambitious title-page dedication to Queen Charlotte.

He also authoured a General Commercial Dictionary and translated Gautier's Life and Exploits of Pyrrhus from the French. This three volume History seems likely to have been his proudest project, given his known preference for the subject and the ambitious title-page dedication to Queen Charlotte.

Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823) was a sculptor from London generally considered to be the finest British sculptor of the late 18th century. He was also a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He studied first under Peter Scheemakers before studying and working as an antiques dealer, restorer and copier in Rome from 1759 to 1770. Returning to England he became one of the most fashionable portrait sculptors in the country. Nollekens enjoyed the patronage of George III and went on to sculpt a number of British political figures, including George III himself, William Pitt the Younger, Charles James Fox, and Charles Watson-Wentworth. Pole entered the Royal Academy in 1770 and served in the East Indies. He had also participated in the siege of Pondicherry and at the occupation of Toulon in 1793. Pole was promoted rear-admiral in 1795 and served in the West Indies. He was promoted Admiral of the Fleet in 1830. Pole was appointed governor of Newfoundland on 3 June 1800. His term ended in 1801.

Thomas Assheton Smith (the elder) (1752 -1828), landowner who induced Parliament to pass an act enclosing the common land of Llanddeiniolen parish, adding over 2,600 acres to his land holdings, from which he mined slate. Subsequent rioting was put down by a cavalry unit. A close friend of George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea, Smith became one of cricket's main patrons following the establishment of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1787. This portrait was commissioned by Caernarfon Corporation, who paid Beechey £157.10s. It is now in National Museum Cardiff.

Princess Sophia (1777-1848) was the twelfth child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. She is known for rumours surrounding a supposed illegitimate child to which she gave birth as a young woman. There is a lot of speculation over the father of her child, including Thomas Garth, an equerry of her father's, and the product of rape by her elder brother the Duke of Cumberland.
