We recently cruised from Sydney and it was well worth the effort of getting out of bed at 4am to see the ship sail in through the heads at dawn. Absolutely magical experience. If you are ever on a cruise ship coming in here, make it your business to see it - it was far more magical arriving than it was leaving at sunset the previous week.

Port Jackson is Sydney Harbour. Those who live in Sydney justifiably consider it the most beautiful harbour in the world, but this is obviously biased. Nevertheless it is one of the most wonderful harbours around! The views are absolutely magnificent from any point you care to stand, whether on land or from the water. It is a lovely, almost enclosed body of water, and several rivers and creeks drain into it. The jewels in the crown of Port Jackson are the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, but there are many other beautiful spots as well which are not hard to find. Take a few steps and you are in the Botanic Gardens, or board a boat and the whole harbour is your oyster! One of the best ways, if not the best way, to enjoy the Harbour is to get a ferry. It is very cheap and convenient. It will take you wherever you wish, really, and you will enjoy the most amazing views. Try it if you can!

Tourists have totally made the guns a thing to touch. And with elements, the gun might go derelict soon. Stop this and make it a thing to marvel, not touch.

Captain Phillip got it right. What a place to found one of the world's most outstanding cities!!

Port Jackson (aka Sydney Harbour) is, geologically speaking, a flooded valley. The landform was at one time a sandstone-based plateau. Over time, water eroded a canyon. Then the plateau dropped and the sea flooded in. The world's greatest natural harbour was created.

Port Jackson is now surounded by Sydney and its suburbs. To get some idea of what it looked like before Sydney was built, go a little north to the Hawkesbury River and Broken Bay (also highly recommended).

Port Jackson needs to be explored by boat. Fortunately there are plenty of cheap ferry services that service many of its major locations and allow a tourist to explore this vast harbour. There is also a sea-plane service from Rose Bay to Palm Beach. It's relatively expensive (but good value) and provides a fantastic view of the harbour (as well as Sydney's greatest jewell, the Northern Beaches).

You can years exploring all the nooks and crannies, and islands, in Port Jackson. It's a wonderland for a photographer, there are some excellent scuba diving locations and, if you can get on a yacht, do so - even it it's a small one.

Port Jackson, aka Sydney Harbour is one of the most magnificent harbours in the world. A great place to visit, you can enjoy a ferry ride to numerous places, walk the Harbour Bridge, explore the banks of the harbour, see the Opera House and Circular Quay to name a few. Dining options abound. Once visited, you will return.

Port Jackson is used interchangeably with Sydney Harbour but it includes other water bodies. Coming from the Tasman Sea into Port Jackson is an extraordinary experience. It is so exciting to see the iconic Sydney Opera House as well as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The waterways of Port Jackson in our opinion are second to none (slightly biased being Sydneyites). The sydney ferry service make it so accessible, (on sundays awesome value, on travel, as there is a price cap of $2.50, for opal card holders). Our three best ferry rides are. The parramatta ferry, as the run up the river is very enjoyable. The manly ferry is a must for visitors, and Watsons Bay, fun to visit for a long lunch, of seafood at Doyles and an after lunch walk to the gap.

Port Jackson is the area we know as Sydney Harbour and one of the most spectacular harbours in the world not only on the water but the many walks around the coastline. With its busy water traffic and iconic structures such as the bridge and the Opera House it must be seen from the water. Captain James Cook, in 1779 named it Port Jackson after Sir George Jackson, Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty as a goodwill jesture or seeking a better boat, something we may never know..
