They Robbed The Rich...And That's It

Will Plunkett and Captain James Macleane, two men from different ends of the social spectrum in 18th-century England, enter a gentlemen's agreement: They decide to rid the aristocrats of their belongings. With Plunkett's criminal know-how and Macleane's social connections, they team up to be soon known as "The Gentlemen Highwaymen". But when one day these gentlemen hold up Lord Chief Justice Gibson's coach, Macleane instantly falls in love with his beautiful and cunning niece, Lady Rebecca Gibson. Unfortunately, Thief Taker General Chance, who also is quite fond of Rebecca, is getting closer and closer to getting both.

Aah I'd forgotten how much fun this movie was!
A wonderfully anachronistic tale of highwaymen in 1700s London, the film is shot through with a 90s sensibility and an eclectic cast; Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle and Jonny Lee Miller are the titular rogues of this regency buddy buddy romp, robbing from the rich...and that's it! The gorgeous Liv Tyler is the wild free spirited Lady Rebecca (English accent not too bad either) whilst the great Ken Stott terrifyingly channels his inner Donald Pleasence for a deliciously sinister turn as the much feared and eminently corrupt thief taker, Chance. It must be hard to be an aspiring actor or director and have a famous relative or namesake that you just might be measured against. Nicolas Cage changed his name to avoid comparisons or accusations of nepotism, Angelina Jolie dropped the Voight off the end of her name, and even Emilio Estevez decided on the real family name instead of living off his dad's reputation. I forgot how dirty and grimy this costume drama movie was! The two title characters join up to pass off as fopish gentlemen in order to study them and rob whats worth robbing. Ridley Scott's son directed this 99 flick. Very good action, fast paced and a sadistic villain by the name of Mr. Chance make it stand out. Alan Cummings is also a surprise as an acommplice in robbing the richest of the rich.

This is a rather odd movie. It's a period film in look only with the soundtrack and dialogue working against the setting.
It's happy to wallow in the mud and faeces at every turn and feels far more authentic in that regard to some of the more romantic tales of the same era.
Miller, Carlyle & Tyler are all fairly decent in the lead roles but it's Ken Stott that really steals the film as the antagonist of the piece.

Film #12 of The December Project
Plunkett and Macleane is about two criminals (one of them part of the gentry), who start robbing aristocrats together as highwaymen. When Macleane falls in love with one of their targets for robbery and he reveals their true identities, obviously things go quite wrong.
I was really disappointed with Plunkett and Macleane. The description made it sound like it would be a fun adventure story, like the Three Musketeers or Robin Hood or something. Instead, it tries way too hard to be dark and edgy.
