We arrived an hour before the next guided tour. We opted to walk around Vieux Quebec a bit more and then return for the guided tour. We were certainly glad that we did.
Instead of a tour of the museum, the guided tour took us outside where we were given a brief history of Quebec City and of Place Royal. After the tour, we returned to the museum and were able to visit it at our leisure.
If convenient, do take the short 45-minute guided tour, which was very informative.

This tiny square will remind those who have never toured Europe what it is like. My sister has traveled as a tour escort for over 20 years and visited and resided in most major tourist destinations in Europe but never ever visited Quebec City. Her impression: Wow, where am I. I know this can't be Europe because we got here by car!
No where else in North America will you see this kind of architecture except in the Old Quebec. A real GEM.

We went here spontaneously and loved it! We all liked the movie- it talks mainly about Samuel de Champlain and is not an intro to the museum. The whole museum is really interesting, but the highlight for us (and definitely my daughter) were the costumes. You can really try on whole period outfits and play around in the scenes (kitchen/house, bedroom). Hoping to go back on our next trip!

We are so delighted to read those positive comments! Thank you for taking time to let us know that your family has appreciated the museum and had good times playing with costumes. It's motivating for the whole team. We will make sure these comments are forwarded to the appropriate personnel. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you to the Museum again soon!

Reasonably priced.. 2 small floors of seeing various artifacts. Upper floor had some interactive singing with complimentary hot chocolate. Coat check was handy with our heavy winter coats. The movie though... awful! Was hoping to learn something and didn't learn a thing. It was basically about a woman painting Samuel de Champlain.. nothing informative or interesting and was quite disappointed. Kids didn't enjoy it either. :(

When we visited the museum it was only open weekends, but we were still the only people in the whole place...
They are set up across four flours:
- The basement has a really fun costume area where kids and adults can dress up in period clothes and then take pictures (this may have been the best part of the visit!)
- The ground floor has the entry area, coat room (much needed in Dec!), restrooms, gift shop, a model of the early settlement Quebec, and the 3D movie theater (more on this below).
- The remaining two floors are exhibits that focus on Place Royale (hence the museum name). They include examples of items found when restoring the houses, details on daily lives, displays on the construction / development of the area, and many activities for kids (though we played too).
The staff was VERY friendly and VERY helpful. There is a reduced admission charge for students (so bring along your ID card).
The only negative thing to say is that the 3D movie is horrible... we were told it was an introduction to the museum, but it IS NOT. It is a lesson about the history of a painting of Champlain that was commissioned for the Musée de la Civilisation. There was maybe two lines in the movie that talked about the founding of Quebec... not what I'd consider an introduction to the museum.
Don't waste the 1/2 hour on the movie. Head straight to the basement to play and then upstairs to learn.

I've been to many, many museums, and most, including in Old Quebec, have the same type of "movie" they wish you to watch at the beginning with an elementary school feel. Not so at Musee de la Place Royale. This was probably the first time I've ever actually enjoyed a museum's intro movie! It wasn't overly cheesy, and the animation was actually pretty!
If you go to this museum, do not skip the film!

We visited on a quiet day, and were blown away by the quality of the costumes to try on in the basement! 4 adults had a great time dressing up and posing in the cooperage house rooms. I'm sure it would be great with kids, too. The rest of the interactive displays were really well presented as well.

The artifacts and displays are very interesting here and I noticed a number of children playing with the interactive displays. The architecture is also very interesting and I actually spent a bit more time here than I though I would.

This is a lovely modern museum with two floors of exhibits, an unusual 30 min modern intro 3D movie and a 45 min guided tour around Place Royale. Very good value. For those with children there is a ground floor laid out as a Cooperage home with dressing up clothes. The
rest of the museum has interactive exhibits.
