I pulled a gun on a man who threatened to kill me
I pulled a gun on a man who threatened to kill me

I’m a groundskeeper for an apartment and on this day I was walking the grounds for dog poop, and this man starts yelling at me and walking towards me accusing me of eyeballing his wife. ( I have know idea who this guy or his wife is) and and continuing to walk away. He purses me and is now closely following me when he said “you think you’re a tough guy?” “ I’ll fucking kill you” so I ran a couple of feet away and heard him following so I pulled my gun and slowly backed away, he backed off as well. What should I do?

Employer doesn't want us clocking in until we reach the first house call.
Employer doesn't want us clocking in until we reach the first house call.
Employment Law

Recently I've started a new job at an appliance repair company that does house calls. I'm still training, and I'll get put with another technician who has a van. I'm required to be at the office at 7:30 to be picked up (sometimes the person I'm riding with is late though and we won't leave until 8 or 8:30) and my bosses are telling me that I'm not allowed to actually clock in until we reach the first customer's house, which can sometimes be over an hour away. We're also required to clock out as soon as the last job of the day is done, though we still need to drive back to the office so I can get my car.

Is this legal? It feels sketchy at best, especially when at times the person I'm riding with will make me drive. Is there anything I can do about this? I live in Florida and the company is based in Florida.

[EDIT: Just wanted to add that we are all regular full-time employees, not independent contractors.]

KLM cancels ticket for African girl flight saying "didn't you know African women only travel with husband or father?"
KLM cancels ticket for African girl flight saying "didn't you know African women only travel with husband or father?"

This is a real story that happened today. After making sure that my long time GF (African) can fly to spend her vacation with me in Ecuador, I bought us both flights, booked airbnb, booked car rent, etc etc for over 5000 usd. To make sure that she can fly, I asked her to write to KLM support email and they responded that she can fly connecting in Europe without a problem. Same info is on their website. Today at the airport the poor girl comes to check in at KLM stand in Nairobi and what they tell her is "you can't fly without husband or father". When she takes out her phone to record this weird KLM rule, they start saying that she needs an EU visa to fly. When she askes them to see her conversation with their KLM co-worker or to check the KLM website, they refuse. 4 hours later she leaves Nairobi airport in tears. KLM did not even give any paper notice about her cancelled ticket nor they sent an email despite her and my demands. What will they say tomorrow, "a no-show"? she recorded some part of the conversation with them.

NO this is not scam. I wasn't scammed I'm 100% sure. I never sent that girl money or gifts, and it was her interest same as mine to fly to spend the vacation. We are still attempting to meet in Ecuador.

Our moral and financial loss due to this unlawful KLM behavour is huge. There's absolutely zero reason why KLM would have the right to do so. We were totally prepared with all reservations and insurances etc etc. What we were not prepared for was the spirit of KLM airline company.

Please help! what can I do now?

My employer [Pennsylvania] slashed our salaries in half today, and are forcing us to choose whether to stay or leave tomorrow. What do I do?
My employer [Pennsylvania] slashed our salaries in half today, and are forcing us to choose whether to stay or leave tomorrow. What do I do?

I've worked for this company for 4 years now, and today we were informed that "there was an error in our pay calculations" even years before that. As a result, our salary will be dropping from around $80-85k to $35-40k. After receiving this news, all of us in the department were told to think it over for the night, and then tomorrow we will be asked if we are committed to continue working, or if we would like to leave.

So here are my questions:

  1. Should I choose to "leave" when asked, would that count as termination, and would I be eligible for unemployment pay?

  2. Also should I choose to "leave", is there any kind of temporary health care to hold me for a period of time while I seek out a new job?

  3. Is this even legal??

For some context, I personally have been unhappy there for a few months now, and some more recent changes the last few weeks have made things even tougher. [For example - we are no longer allowed to take off Monday or Friday...is THAT legal?] While I'm not excited to go job hunting, I know I can easily find another job elsewhere for more than that, although it will be more difficult to reach that higher number again.

Additionally I'm 27 years old and relatively health, although I don't want to be without healthcare for too long [if at all]. My student loans and car is paid off, I still live home with my family [who has already agreed to accommodate me through this process] and have no other debts. I have a decent amount of money saved up so I'm not worried about going without income for a month or two if it comes down to it.

Thanks for reading and offering any advice. Ultimately I'm siding towards leaving, but those other factors are important to me as well.

[NJ] Tow company damaged my bendy bus, states they aren't liable because they didn't want to do it in the first place.
Other Civil Matters

Hello,

I run a charter bus company in a small town in NJ next to I-95. While using my bendy bus (60 feet), it broke down and stalled on the side of the road. I called 10 heavy duty tow truck places who all refused to tow it because of it's length, and it sat there so long and created a traffic jam that the police had to get involved and basically forced one of the tow companies that said no to tow it. They hooked up to it and after I explained to them several times how to properly tow it, they tore the middle connection of the bus by taking a turn to sharp and are now refusing to fix it or be held liable because they didn't want to do it in the first place.

What are my options?

Employer wants me to travel to "Do Not Travel" zone. Wrongful termination?
Employer wants me to travel to "Do Not Travel" zone. Wrongful termination?
Employment Law

I work at a "work at will state" (texas). My employer wants me to travel to Tamulipas Mexico, which is a Level 4 on travel.state.gov "do not travel". I brought this up and stated that I was not willing to go, and I was threatened with being fired I dont go. Is this wrongful termination?

So i would like to add, though it may not change things, that the job in question is an Hourly technical position. That said, while the job description was that there would be out of state and yes out of country travel, there was no mention of any requirement to travel to any dangerous areas - nor was this in any way presented as a dangerous job. I am in no way supposed to be a freedom fighter and i have no interest in going to warzones.

Just came home to a note on the door of our apartment; “Notice to leave premises within 3 days.”
Just came home to a note on the door of our apartment; “Notice to leave premises within 3 days.”
Landlord Tenant Housing

Me and my girlfriend got an apartment last fall where we have been living. As the title says, I came home to an eviction notice to leave the premises within 3 days. Upon further inspection, the last 3 months rent were being held as “pending” and didn’t actually go through. It’s after hours so we haven’t been able to call the leasing office yet for more questions. We both scoured our emails to see if we missed any warnings but there was nothing. The bank, nor landlord/company we rent from sent anything regarding our missed payments. The only email they sent was yesterday, a day before evicting us.

Are they allowed to do this? It was my understanding that landlords need to give tenants a 30 day notice. Perhaps I’m missing some information or something. We could’ve cleared this up had they let us know after the first payment. Any advice is welcomed.

Edit: We live in Ohio.

Is my neighbor, who is a registered sex offender, allowed to live with the children of his girlfriend?
Is my neighbor, who is a registered sex offender, allowed to live with the children of his girlfriend?
Criminal Law

Not sure what flair to use for this post, but I have a neighbor who is a registered sex offender has a girlfriend that, as far as I can tell, is living with him and her kids also appear to be living there.

His crime happened 20 years ago. He was 27 and the victim was 15. He was convicted of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child, a felony, and he has to register for life. He is compliant with his reporting.

The particular child in question is about high school age and walks in front of my house on her way home from school every day. Today as I pulled into my driveway he was out greeting her and put his arm around her as they walked up to their house and it really icked me out and made me worry for her. I hope it’s nothing, but is he even allowed to live with kids that aren’t his? Should I be reporting this to someone so they can make sure everything is okay? I don’t know anything about his girlfriend, so I don’t know if he’s reported that he’s living with non-biological children. Does it even matter what age/gender the child is? I think it bothered me because she is around the age his victim was, would it be any different if it was a 4 year old boy?

A neighbor fired off a weapon and the bullet came within a foot of my head
A neighbor fired off a weapon and the bullet came within a foot of my head
Landlord Tenant Housing

This happened yesterday. I was sitting at my desk and all the sudden my right monitor “exploded.” Long story short, my neighbor’s 16 year old son fired off a gun and the bullet came within a foot of my head.

I can’t believe I almost got shot in the head in the comfort of my own apartment.

He’s in custody now at a juvenile detention center. He had other charges on him: violation of house arrest, 2 drug possession charges, unlawful possession of a firearm, and now firing into a dwelling (which I’m a victim of).

I want the apartment complex to kick the family out asap. I do not want to live right next to these people who let their son be so negligent with a firearm that it almost killed me.

I’ve never been in a situation like this before. I’m in between en jobs rn and don’t have the resources to move.

The apartment complex says they’re looking into terminating their lease but have to head back from their legal department before they can confirm.

Advice would be appreciated, thank you

Vehicle parked in driveway was totaled by county grader during snowstorm - county claiming immunity
Vehicle parked in driveway was totaled by county grader during snowstorm - county claiming immunity

Hello Reddit friends,

My uncle had his vehicle totalled by a snow grader in a recent snowstorm. The vehicle was parked in his driveway and when the grader went to turn around, it smashed into the vehicle and drove away.

After submitting a police report, photos and video of the incident (entire situation was recorded), the county sent a letter claiming "government immunity" and not liable for payment as the road grader is not considered "motor vehicle" Is this valid? My uncle does not have full-coverage on the vehicle and his own insurance will not provide any help. His un-insured vehicle claim (recommended to complete by his insurance agent) was denied.

Is there any legal action he can take? Is there a specific type of lawyer he should look into getting? Or, is he out of luck and that's just how these situations end? I find it ridiculous that the vehicle was parked IN HIS DRIVEWAY, totalled, and he is solely responsible for fixing.

A few other relevant details:

  • State & County - Clear Creek County, Colorado

  • Emails have been exchanged where the county is aware / admits fault, but then proceeded to send the "immunity" letter.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hospital held my dad for 12 hours in the waiting room while he was having multiple strokes
Hospital held my dad for 12 hours in the waiting room while he was having multiple strokes
Medicine and Malpractice

So my dad was having difficulty walking, standing, and moving by himself. However, not clearly showing the left side drooping characteristics of a stroke. After 12 hours of waiting and finally being put into a room, we were informed that he had a series of minor strokes and finally a major one that was the main cause of concern.

After running tests, his blood sugar levels was in the 300’s and his blood pressure was in the 250’s with a 75% blockage in his carotid artery that could have resulted in his death.

These numbers were unknown at the time of arriving at the hospital, but my mother tried to push the desk that she thought he was having a stroke. They didn’t take her seriously until she and my dad nearly blew up on them and left in hours 12.

This was 7 months ago and now that all the financial and emotional damage has settled, is there any grounds to sue for negligence despite his situation?

I was arrested for a 6 year old warrant I did not know I had for a “hit and run”. My employer forgot to file an accident report.
I was arrested for a 6 year old warrant I did not know I had for a “hit and run”. My employer forgot to file an accident report.

Hey everyone.

I’ve come here for some guidance cuz I know nothing about what to do in my situation.

I just got off the phone with the court clerk and was told I don’t qualify for a public defender, so I am trying to figure this one out on my own if possible. So… First off, yeah I had a minor fender bender back in summer of 2018 while on the job working for the State Parks of Oregon. I filed a police report with the state police and all that jazz. My employer was supposed to file an accident report that later (5 years) I found out was never filed when I went to the DMV for a new drivers license and there was a suspension on my name. They handed me a form, and I got it filled out and turned it back in no problem after reaching out to risk and safety for the state parks. I got my license that day.

The R&S coordinator even told me over the phone half a year ago that it was supposed to be done on their part and she apologized. So I’d like to try and get that in writing from her, hoping that could help me.

Mind you, I have had like 5 federal background checks done since then and nothing has ever popped up before (I work a federal job). So I never knew about this warrant. Even my boss was very surprised.

I even bought a gun for my home and then applied for a CCW license and when I went to the sheriffs office for the license appointment, I was arrested after my appointment. Basically turned myself in lol. And I thought it was a joke at first 😂 …stupid.

I went through the whole process and was put into a cell until I got bailed out 8 hours later.

I know this doesn’t seem like a huge deal, but I don’t want this on my record obviously. Being clean matters to me.

What can I do?

Is it a bad idea to try and represent myself? Someone told me I could send a note to the judge prior to try and explain the situation and maybe give them evidence beforehand (such as the accident report and the police report). But I’m not sure how that’s done exactly or if I really even can do that.

I also have a “Failure to Appear” on the warrant in which I never personally received the court notice nor did the lady I lived with.

I feel like I have a solid story I could tell myself, but the courtroom is a place that’s hard to navigate.

Any advice??? Thanks!

NY Pharmacist told my FIL what drugs I'm taking putting my safety and my wife's at risk
NY Pharmacist told my FIL what drugs I'm taking putting my safety and my wife's at risk

I had a major back injury in 2022 resulting in 2 herniated discs in L4-L5/L5-S1 as well as multiple lumbar and thoracic bulges

I've had a rhizotomy procedure as well as physical therapy, lose 45 pounds to decrease stress on spine (280 down to 235 but still ways to go need to drop to 160 and working on it) as well as epidurals monthly, trigger points every 2 weeks and a pain management program.

My local big chain pharmacy (CVS/Walgreens/Walmart etc) has had supply chain issues with my fentanyl patches and the pharmacist mentioned I should try independent pharmacies as they've had better luck than big corporate stores

So I find one nearby that takes my insurance and I had my pain doctor send scripts there for the patches

My county has a drug issue so we have a lotta folks who sadly keep an ear out for easy marks

The independent pharmacy I sent the script to denied it as they have a no narcotics policy which is fine my pain doctor just sent it to another pharmacy to fill while I just wait.

Now it gets dicey. My family and my in laws both live nearby and the pharmacist knows my family and my in laws somehow. I didn't know this. The pharmacist went to my father in law and told him I was filling dangerous scripts and he's worried. This man is a stranger. And my FIL is a bit of an ass. He then goes straight to my wife and harasses her in our home about how I'm a drug seeker. He is convinced despite multiple MRIs that my issue is just being fat and he's been very vocal about how fat people are clogging the health system.

My wife is a mess as she's easily anxious. My FIL shared my issue with his family to make it seem like I'm a problem . And my dad's angry at the pharmacist for violating HIPAA

Additionally I've gotten texts and calls from folks in the county as they were apparently around when the pharmacist spoke loudly and publicly to my FIL and want to know which doctor gave me scripts and I've had my bag searched twice at my local temple.

I should add we're Indian so narcotics are a bit taboo so the social stigma aspect also hurts as now everyone knows and judges me which IDC but my wife's mental health has sunk.

I go to temple regularly and in a small community news spreads, my wife has had her car broken into and we've had a lot of issues with drug addiction in the community with thefts and violent behavior becoming normalized from community members suffering from addiction.

How do I get help against the pharmacist and my FIL for spreading my medical information and causing my wife and I to become marks for drug seekers?

Cat whiskers cut by fathers ex-girlfriend.
Cat whiskers cut by fathers ex-girlfriend.
Criminal Law

Last night, my father had his now ex-girfriend over. At about 2 am, I was woken up by her drunken screaming. I had worked a double shift and tried to just shut my eyes and let it pass, but the more my dad tried to calm her the louder she got. She ended leaving in cuffs for being disorderly and public drunkenness.

This morning I wake up to find my cat's whiskers are really short. I immediately called my dad and my mom at the time who had my sister to question if they cut them to a obvious no. My dad, 11yo sister, myself, and his ex were here. The only one that was roaming the house was my dad's ex. My dad was upstairs until he escorted her out the house. My sister was scared in her room, she never went anywhere in the house without my dad during this incident.

I am going to court next week with my dad as a witness to the things she did to get a restraining order. I'm 100% going to mention this while in court. Wanted to know if this was criminal at all, she clearly did it out of spite while arguing.

Pictures of the cat (she's fine) https://imgur.com/a/Rf49ff0 Ironic enough I have picture of the pair of scissors and some whiskers next to it.

Neighbor wants to take me to court over foraging bees and other plant issues
Neighbor wants to take me to court over foraging bees and other plant issues

Hello all. I have a back neighbor who I share a wall with. Las Vegas, Nevada. They have a pool, I have 2 trees with flowers along the wall. I used to have 2 palm trees (removed at neighbor's request because fronds were "falling into pool") and a plum tree (removed because it mysteriously died and because plums "attracted rats", were "falling in [her] yard", and "almost choked [her] dog"). Additionally I have a few rose vines growing on that wall. I do not live on the property, I am renting it out. I have my landscapers come in every quarter to trim whatever is growing over the property line.

Every spring, bees come to both our yards. They forage in my trees and drink her pool's water. She claims I am being a nuisance because I am allowing them to swarm. I have paid for a licensed bee removal contractor to inspect the property 2 years ago. No beehive was found, and they claim nothing can be done except for removing the trees, and even then it won't stop them from drinking water in her pool. They sprayed one time, just for show, because they said the spray won't keep them from coming back as soon as the next day.

Neighbor wants to take me to court over the bees foraging in my trees, and because of plant life growing over the property line (rose vines, which I trim once a quarter. Discerning whether I should have landscapers trim it twice a quarter.). What can I do?

Traded in (surrendered) car at dealership as part of a new car deal. Six months later, repo shows up at residence. Dealership now claims to not know where car is, or what happened to it.
Traded in (surrendered) car at dealership as part of a new car deal. Six months later, repo shows up at residence. Dealership now claims to not know where car is, or what happened to it.

My wife bought a used car from a dealership. The car had high miles, but ran good, and was a decent deal. The car made it about a year, and broke down a couple states away with my wife on vacation. She was able to limp it to the nearest manufactures dealership. They said the fuel pump was bad, and that there was so much sludge in the engine, they wouldn't recommend driving it.

Eventually they did some repairs, and my wife was able to make it within an hours distance to the original dealership where she purchased it, and they came and towed it in.

So now she's basically told that the car is worthless, and she worked a deal on a new '23 model..... Nothing fancy, under. 30k.

The dealership told her, not to worry about the broken down car, and that everything was taken care of.

First problem came a month later, when the finance company tries to withdraw a payment for the broken down car. My wife gets in touch with the dealership, and the bank, and it gets reversed... They say it was a mistake, not to worry.

So, like 6 months later, a repo rig shows up at my house looking for the car.

And now the dealership is acting like they don't know what happened to the car, or like they just "lost" it or something, and don't know where it is, or what happened.

Seems fishy to me.

I mean could they have resold the car, after telling my wife it's worthless, and now just lying about it.

I guess it's going to tank our credit for a couple reasons, when my wife did nothing wrong except to believe what they told her.

Would it be worthwhile, or the smart thing to do to contact a lawyer in this matter?

Landlord won't give us keys to replaced lock.
Landlord won't give us keys to replaced lock.
Landlord Tenant Housing

So me (26f) and my roommate are living in a rental condo in Indiana. When we first moved in our house had a really bad lock that had a hard time opening from the inside. This was irritating, but we had keys to lock and unlock the doors.

The landlord came to replace the locks two weeks ago and lost the keys that day. We have never had keys to this door, which means we no longer have keys to any door in our house and we either have to maneuver in the mornings to not lock someone out, or we have to leave our door unlocked.

What in the world do we do here? This isn't our fault and no one (including the landlord) is arguing that it is, but he is still taking his sweet time and won't do anything.

I have all of this in provable writing and, again, no one is saying we need to do anything. On top of this, the landlord wants us to do a bunch of stuff like moving things that belong to the homeowners so the HOA can do yard work, etc.

Nothing about any of this has been in the lease and honestly this guy has been a nightmare.

Do I have any action I can take moving forward to fix this?

Thank you!

Boyfriend's family are trying to access a computer which has my personal financial information and dirty selfies on it - any way to stop them?
Boyfriend's family are trying to access a computer which has my personal financial information and dirty selfies on it - any way to stop them?

I live in NYC. My boyfriend of 8 years died unexpectedly a month ago. We both had kids, so lived in separate apartments a few blocks apart. I'm not on his lease or any of his bills, and he didn't write a will. Because of this, everything goes to his kids (which I totally agree with), and their mom, his ex, is the administrator of his estate.

Since he died, his ex and his mother have changed the locks on his apartment and storage space. (Yes many of my things are still there.) They won't respond to my texts and calls.

I recently found through one of his friends that they asked him to try to get the password to my boyfriend's computer from me. I'm irate, but also concerned, because if they do figure out the password or take it to a data recovery place, they might be able to access my private information (I used that computer frequently for work, to pay bills, make medical appointments, etc.) And they will definitely be able to access 8 years of dirty pictures he and I sent each other or took together.

Is there any way to prevent them from accessing that information? I understand the computer itself is legally theirs, but do I have any right to protect my own data and images of me that are on it?

Thanks so much!

Can I be demoted for not accepting a promotion?
Can I be demoted for not accepting a promotion?
Employment Law

My employer offered me a promotion. Title change but no change in wage. I questioned this. I don’t want more responsibility for the same pay, who would? I was told it was their bottom line. That if I don’t take this promotion I would be demoted in wage AND title, from my current. It looks like this: I keep my pay and receive a new title with more responsibility OR I lose $4/hr AND my current title. Money aside: is this even legal?

Can I keep evidence of illegal activity if it's considered confidential?

At the company I work at, an email was sent out to let us know that we shouldn't be discussing wages with other employees or we would be terminated. In the email it also stated that the email was confidential and protected by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. I didn't know if I were to take a picture to keep in case of anything would still cause issues, since I'm pretty sure this is very much illegal.

Father Claimed Me on Taxes
Father Claimed Me on Taxes
Tax Law

My father has been going around bragging about how he cut me off. The only thing he paid for was my phone bill (we were on a family plan) until recently but he has filed for me as a dependent on his taxes when that is simply not true. I pay for my rent, any doctor visits, my tuition is paid through school, and my mom (they aren’t together) helps me with groceries. I am on his health insurance at work but I doubt that covers more than 50% of my living expenses.

The first 6 months of 2023 I lived with my mom and the latter half I started grad school and a grad assistantship. Before that in 2022 I held two jobs one being a resident assistant so housing was covered and school was paid because of scholarships. Any of the money I made went to my necessities.

This situation is frustrating because when I signed up for FAFSA this year I qualified for the pell grant and now I don’t because he’s claimed me.

What are my options? I don’t want it to be some huge thing either he amends his taxes or he pays for my summer semester as my fall and spring are covered through work. I’m in Florida if that information helps.

How to check validity of stay order?
How to check validity of stay order?
Non-US

Tried posting this in legal subs for India to no avail hence I'm trying here. As per the title, I am wondering if there are any specific ways to check the validity of a stay order on a personal level as we don't want to attract any attention. One of our properties had been put under stay by the state Registrar of Co-Op Societies way back in 1998 due to a petition filed in court. Now that we are planning to sell off the property we want to check what is the status of the stay. I have searched online databases of Supreme Court, High Court and all the court complexes but am unable to find the petition. Mind you, I only have the petition name and not any other details. I have searched the databases by putting the name of the petitioner and respondents, separately. I've only had one partial hit with the database which has said that petition has been disposed. Is there any other way to go about this without involving a lawyer/advocate? If it would be a covert way that would be better because we don't want to make a scene and attract attention. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
